Would Free College Tuition Detriment Or Benefit Our Future Society?, Alexee Bambrough Apr 2022

Would Free College Tuition Detriment Or Benefit Our Future Society?, Alexee Bambrough

Student Research Symposium

College tuition costs are becoming increasingly more expensive. My research was to understand if eliminating college tuition would benefit or detriment our future society. In conducting my research I used library databases to find primary and secondary sources. I focused heavily on statistics and first hand experiences. From these sources I was able to discover that the college tuition costs are contributing to large amounts of student debt, bigger gaps in equality, and a less educated society. It can be argued that eliminating college tuition costs would overall benefit our future society.

Violence Experienced In Immigrant Communities, Katherine Flores Apr 2022

Violence Experienced In Immigrant Communities, Katherine Flores

Student Research Symposium

Violence is sadly not a new concept to those in immigrant communities. Many immigrants leave their home country for the United States in hopes of finding a better life, not just for themselves but for their families as well. Sadly, what awaits them here, in many cases, is the same thing that they were running from. Violence takes many faces, such as street gangs and domestic violence, and immigrants experience more injustices such as racism and economic struggles. Through these narratives, one can see the struggles of what it means to be an immigrant in the United States and the …

The Need For Gender Neutral Spaces, Ainsley Statham Apr 2022

The Need For Gender Neutral Spaces, Ainsley Statham

Student Research Symposium

An ongoing problem all over the country are universities and the lack of gender-neutral spaces. Students all over are asking for safe and welcoming spaces so they do not have to fear for their safety while on campus. Over the last 10 years, universities have started to adapt their already built spaces to accommodate the needs of their students and faculty by making them gender neutral. I started to research what universities in the country are going above and beyond to make sure their students are safe in contrast to the not-so-great campuses that choose to ignore their students needs. …

The Effects Of Snapchat On Young Adults, Mckena Morrison Apr 2022

The Effects Of Snapchat On Young Adults, Mckena Morrison

Student Research Symposium

In my research, I was trying to find out the good and bad effects of Snapchat on young adults. I wanted to know the effects it could have on me so I could reassess my daily use of this popular app. This research aims to show that the effects of Snapchat depend on how you use it. When used in a good way the benefits on young adults’ communication and other aspects in their life, outweigh the negative outcomes. In my research, I looked at articles from primary and secondary sources, interviewed some friends and family to get their opinion …

How Childhood Emotional And Verbal Abuse Influences Future Adult Relationships, Kinlee Meade

Student Research Symposium

Abuse is a societal issue all around the globe especially emotional and verbal abuse whereas it has the least amount of awareness and no clear definition. My research had the sole purpose of studying how childhood emotional and verbal abuse affects the victims' future adult relationships. My research looked into the long term effects abuse has on the psyche and behavior, including various primary source studies that applied the concepts into environmental situations, and how they influence relationships. It has been discovered that emotional and verbal abuse received during childhood create or worsen pre existing mental health conditions such as; …

Pet Therapy On College Campuses: Putting The “Paw” In Pawsitive Mental Health, Tyler Cook

Student Research Symposium

College students often are not able to receive the help they need when they have mental health problems. Research has shown that pet therapy is a very effective and practical solution to this shortage of resources. It has been used to help students who suffer from common concerns such as depression, stress, anxiety, and loneliness. The research and accounts in this essay communicates how this therapy works and why it works. By using online databases, I collected primary sources and diverse statistics to evaluate the topic. As I analyzed the data I found that pet therapy is highly-favored by college …

Is Parental Encouragement (As Measured By Piccolo) During Toddlerhood Correlated With High-Risk Behaviors In 5Th Grade? Are These Correlations Different For First-Born Children Versus Children With Older Siblings?, Jocelyn Meyers Apr 2022

Is Parental Encouragement (As Measured By Piccolo) During Toddlerhood Correlated With High-Risk Behaviors In 5Th Grade? Are These Correlations Different For First-Born Children Versus Children With Older Siblings?, Jocelyn Meyers

Student Research Symposium

Children need support through healthy, positive relationships with adults, but they also need room to grow, learn, and slowly gain independence. The PICCOLO User's guide defines Encouragement as an “Active support of exploration, effort, skills, initiative, curiosity, creativity, and play” (Roggman, et.al., 2013). Parental support and encouragement of autonomy is correlated with better development of self-regulation and brain development, and can even influence executive functioning and parent-child relationships (Bernier, et al., 2010). Studies have already shown that proper encouragement in early childhood is linked to healthy development, Ispa, et al. (2004) found that maternal intrusiveness or lack of encouragement and …

Upward Mobility And Affordable Housing, Amy Mackliet, Trevor Tarter

Student Research Symposium

Permanent Supportive Housing (PSH) and Rapid rehousing can provide safe, stable housing for vulnerable homeless populations such as those experiencing substance abuse disorder, mental illness, and chronic homelessness (Aubry et al., 2020). We evaluated and analyzed research articles on supportive housing interventions and upward mobility. Literature was collected from online scholarly databases. Evidence supports Rapid Rehousing and PSH interventions in improving targeted outcomes such as mental health, substance abuse use, cost-effectiveness, housing stability, and quality of life (Aubry et al., 2020; (Miler et al., 2021). Further, the literature supports that PSH and Rapid Rehousing are cost-effective models when considering cost …

Heart2heart: Discrimination-Based Stress Reduction In Black, Indigenous, And People Of Color, Shari Linares

Student Research Symposium

Heart2Heart is a theoretically-grounded racial-healing intervention for people of color created by people of color to help reduce levels of discrimination-based stress they may be experiencing. H2H contains definitions on racial trauma and how it affects us, a Racism Recovery Plan, and allows for skills based learning on detecting Microaggressions, using Microinterventions, and learning mindfulness skills. H2H originally began as an in-person intervention using a multiple-baseline design with only Latinx students with promising results, however we had to move online through zoom due to the pandemic's effects. This called for an online delivery system, which is what H2H Online will …

The Well-Being Of Women Of Color During Covid-19, Shari Linares, Hannah Baxter Apr 2022

The Well-Being Of Women Of Color During Covid-19, Shari Linares, Hannah Baxter

Student Research Symposium

Well-being for WOC is a media project that examined the differences in well-being for women of color throughout the Covid-19 pandemic. This project was based on the Household Pulse Survey that collected data each week throughout the pandemic. Well-being was defined through the variables mental health, physical health, and financial security, and we also polled our community through the Instagram page to understand the experiences of women of color in our community. We found that race is in fact a very large factor in well-being throughout the pandemic.

Detecting Accurate Emotions In Faces, Marisa Davis, Emma Greenwood Apr 2022

Detecting Accurate Emotions In Faces, Marisa Davis, Emma Greenwood

Student Research Symposium

Anger race bias is the tendency to misidentify expressions of emotion, specifically anger, in Black or racially ambiguous faces (Hutchings & Haddock, 2008). Hutchings & Haddock (2008) found that Black faces are more likely to be perceived as angry by people high in implicit bias. Since January 1st, 2015, 119 unarmed Black males have been shot and killed by police (Washington Post, 2020). When police officers perceive a threat, they are more likely to shoot, and mistaking expressions such as fear for anger causes the perception of increased threat that can lead to inaccurate responses such as excessive force (Correll …

Patch Clamps, Electrophysiology, And The Optimistic Future Of Neuroscience At Usu, Riley Conover-Elmer

Student Research Symposium

The Neuroscience department is a small, yet nonetheless rapidly growing field at Utah State University. While many students are encouraged to take classes from related fields such as psychology and biology, an official Bachelor's degree has not yet been published for the university. As one of those students, digging deeper into the world of neuroscience has yielded many discoveries on biology/behavior relations that go largely unnoticed by the general student population. However, in preparation for a coming Neuroscience Major, I was given the opportunity to assist Dr. Sara Freeman in preparing for a Neurophysiology Lab course in the Spring of …

Efficacy Of A Yfv-Specific Monoclonal Antibody In The Treatment Of Yf In A Hamster Model, Ryne Christiansen Apr 2021

Efficacy Of A Yfv-Specific Monoclonal Antibody In The Treatment Of Yf In A Hamster Model, Ryne Christiansen

Student Research Symposium

The yellow fever virus (YFV) is a flavivirus found mainly in South America and Africa. Infection may result in fever, chills, jaundice, nausea, and vomiting. Outbreaks may have up to 50% case mortality. Although Yellow Fever (YF) is a highly preventable disease through the use of an effective vaccine, there are no approved antivirals for this disease. An effective antiviral is necessary to treat infected individuals in areas where the YF vaccine was not used and an outbreak of YF occurs. In this study, female Syrian golden hamsters were infected with YFV and treated with YFV-specific monoclonal antibodies (mAbs). Weight …

Antisocial Behaviors In Everyday Life Of A College Student, Ari Romo, Tiana Rowley Apr 2019

Antisocial Behaviors In Everyday Life Of A College Student, Ari Romo, Tiana Rowley

Student Research Symposium

Some Scholars have posited that antisocial behaviors associated with maladaptive lifestyles. Previous experiments identify correlations between prosocial traits and antisocial characteristics using statistical methods of data from a variety of personality tests and surveys. We know prosocial and antisocial behaviors have traits that affect everyday relationships, but there is limited research on how certain characteristics (e.g. psychopathy, heroism, impulsivity, rule breaking, etc.) in antisocial behaviors influence an individual's everyday work and school environment. By conducting an experimental design based off of a series of personality questionnaires and surveys pertinent to possible influencing factors of antisocial behaviors (such as psychopathy) on …

A Place For Everyone: Assessing Recreational Opportunities For Children In Urban, Suburban, And Rural Communities Across The United States, Emily Cook Apr 2019

A Place For Everyone: Assessing Recreational Opportunities For Children In Urban, Suburban, And Rural Communities Across The United States, Emily Cook

Student Research Symposium

Despite an increased need to remain physically active, data suggest that fitness levels decrease across childhood and adolescence (Cooper, 2010). While anecdotal reports often blame this phenomenon on a normalized increase in meal portion size and adolescents' inclination toward screen time (e.g., gaming, media, entertainment), researchers are beginning to investigate the community and family level barriers that may limit or prevent structured and unstructured physical activity among children and adolescents. In line with these efforts, the present research was designed to address the potential link of community infrastructure and youth well-being across a range of communities in the United States. …

Using Animal-Assisted Therapy To Treat Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder, Mary Strong

Student Research Symposium

This paper looks at the studies of the relationship between those with autism spectrum disorder and therapy animals in order to determine how effective therapy animals are in reducing problem behaviors and increasing social interaction. For this literature review, nine different studies have been reviewed to answer the research question over a variety of settings. In the nine different studies that were reviewed the animals used were either dogs, horses, or guinea pigs. These studies were used to determine which of these animals were more effective in a therapeutic setting, and more effective in the improvement of the symptoms in …

Optimizing Delay Discounting Procedures, Jodi Siri, Jillian M. Rung Apr 2016

Optimizing Delay Discounting Procedures, Jodi Siri, Jillian M. Rung

Student Research Symposium

The purpose of the current research is twofold: 1) to identify the causes and typical frequencies of nonsystematic data in three commonly used discounting tasks, and 2) to test and optimize these delay discounting procedures to reduce the amount of non-systematic data that is produced. Experiment 1 will be the first study to explicitly examine the frequency of nonsystematic data obtained across these three procedures, which will identify which method is the most reliable procedure for producing systematic data. While many of these procedures have been widely used, the procedural parameters (e.g., delay range, monetary amounts) have varied greatly across …

Implementing A Measurement Feedback System In A Psychology Graduate Training Clinic, Elizabeth Wynn, Molly Mechammil, Michael Levin, Rick Cruz Apr 2016

Implementing A Measurement Feedback System In A Psychology Graduate Training Clinic, Elizabeth Wynn, Molly Mechammil, Michael Levin, Rick Cruz

Student Research Symposium

Measurement feedback systems (MFS’s) are software tools that help behavioral health clinicians routinely track their clients’ symptoms and collaborate with their client to make decisions concerning treatment. Research has shown that the use of MFS’s may improve clinical decision-making and that it is correlated with greater treatment gains and lower dropout rates when compared to the use of clinicians’ judgement alone. However, there are various factors that can impede the efficacy of these tools. One of these factors is the attitudes of clinicians toward MFS’s. Clinicians have been found to hold predominantly negative attitudes towards MFS’s which poses a major …
