The Seven Spices: Pumpkins, Puritans, And Pathogens In Colonial New England, Michael Sharbaugh Nov 2011

The Seven Spices: Pumpkins, Puritans, And Pathogens In Colonial New England, Michael Sharbaugh

Michael D Sharbaugh

Water sources in the United States' New England region are laden with arsenic. Particularly during North America's colonial period--prior to modern filtration processes--arsenic would make it into the colonists' drinking water. In this article, which evokes the biocultural evolution paradigm, it is argued that colonists offset health risks from the contaminant (arsenic poisoning) by ingesting copious amounts of seven spices--cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg, cardamom, allspice, vanilla, and ginger. The inclusion of these spices in fall and winter recipes that hail from New England would therefore explain why many Americans associate them not only with the region, but with Thanksgiving and Christmas, …

Alexithymia In Alcohol Dependent Patients Is Partially Mediated By Alcohol Expectancy, Fred Thorberg, Ross Young, Karen Sullivan, Michael Lyvers, Cameron Hurst, Jason Connor, Gerald Feeney Sep 2011

Alexithymia In Alcohol Dependent Patients Is Partially Mediated By Alcohol Expectancy, Fred Thorberg, Ross Young, Karen Sullivan, Michael Lyvers, Cameron Hurst, Jason Connor, Gerald Feeney

Mike Lyvers

Background: Up to fifty percent of alcohol dependent individuals have alexithymia, a personality trait characterised by difficulties identifying and describing feelings, a lack of imagination and an externalised cognitive style. Although studies have examined alexithymia in relation to alcohol dependence, no research exists on mechanisms underlying this relationship. The present study examined the mediational effect of alcohol expectancies on alexithymia and alcohol dependence. Methods: 230 outpatients completed the Toronto Alexithymia Scale (TAS-20), the Drinking Expectancy Questionnaire (DEQ) and the Alcohol Use Disorder Identification Test (AUDIT).Results: Regression analysis showed that alexithymia and alcohol dependence was, in two of three cases, partially mediated …

A Psychometric Comparison Of The Toronto Alexithymia Scale (Tas-20) And The Observer Alexithymia Scale (Oas) In An Alcohol-Dependent Sample, Fred Thorberg, Ross Young, Karen Sullivan, Michael Lyvers, Jason Connor, Gerald Feeney Sep 2011

A Psychometric Comparison Of The Toronto Alexithymia Scale (Tas-20) And The Observer Alexithymia Scale (Oas) In An Alcohol-Dependent Sample, Fred Thorberg, Ross Young, Karen Sullivan, Michael Lyvers, Jason Connor, Gerald Feeney

Mike Lyvers

Alexithymia is characterised by deficits in emotional insight and self-reflection that impact on the efficacy of psychological treatments. Given the high prevalence of alexithymia in Alcohol Use Disorders, valid assessment tools are critical. The majority of research on the relationship between alexithymia and alcohol-dependence has employed the self-administered Toronto Alexithymia Scale (TAS-20), The Observer Alexithymia Scale (OAS) has also been recommended. The aim of the present study was to assess the validity and reliability of the OAS and the TAS-20 in an alcohol-dependent sample. Two hundred and ten alcohol-dependent participants in an outpatient Cognitive Behavioral Treatment program were administered the …

Uncoupling Mobility And Learning: When One Does Not Guarantee The Other, Shelley Kinash, Jeffery Brand, Trishita Mathew, Ron Kordyban Jul 2011

Uncoupling Mobility And Learning: When One Does Not Guarantee The Other, Shelley Kinash, Jeffery Brand, Trishita Mathew, Ron Kordyban

Trishita Mathew

Mobile learning was an embedded component of the pedagogical design of an undergraduate course, Digital media and society. In the final semester of 2010 and the first semester of 2011, 135 students participated in an empirical study inquiring into their perceptual experience of mobile learning. To control for access to technology, an optional iPad student loan scheme was used. The iPads were loaded with an electronic textbook and a mobile application of the learning moderation system. Eighty students participated in ten-person focus groups. Feedback on mobility and the electronic text was positive and optimistic. However, the majority of students were …

A Computational Account Of Children's Analogical Reasoning: Balancing Inhibitory Control In Working Memory And Relational Representation, Robert Morrison Apr 2011

A Computational Account Of Children's Analogical Reasoning: Balancing Inhibitory Control In Working Memory And Relational Representation, Robert Morrison

Robert Morrison

Theories accounting for the development of analogical reasoning tend to emphasize either the centrality of relational knowledge accretion or changes in information processing capability. Simulations in LISA (Hummel & Holyoak, 1997, 2003), a neurally inspired computer model of analogical reasoning, allow us to explore how these factors may collaboratively contribute to the development of analogy in young children. Simulations explain systematic variations in United States and Hong Kong children's performance on analogies between familiar scenes (Richland, Morrison & Holyoak, 2006; Richland, Chang, Morrison & Au, 2010). Specifically, changes in inhibition levels in the model's working-memory system explain the developmental progression …

Association Of The Mmpi-2 Restructured Form (Mmpi-2-Rf) Validity Scales With Structured Malingering Criteria, Dustin Wygant, Jaime Anderson, Leslie Allgeier, Jesica Rapier, Martin Sellbom, Robert Granacher Feb 2011

Association Of The Mmpi-2 Restructured Form (Mmpi-2-Rf) Validity Scales With Structured Malingering Criteria, Dustin Wygant, Jaime Anderson, Leslie Allgeier, Jesica Rapier, Martin Sellbom, Robert Granacher

Dustin B. Wygant

The current study examined the validity scales of the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory-2 Restructured Form (MMPI-2-RF; Ben-Porath and Tellegen 2008) in relation to the structured malingering criteria developed to assess malingered neurocognitive dysfunction and pain-related disability. These criteria examined a sample of 251 individuals undergoing compensation-seeking evaluations, who completed a battery of response bias measures. The MMPI-2-RF over-reporting scales yielded large effect sizes in contrasting those in the probable/definite malingering groups from the incentive only groups. The largest effects were found for the Infrequent Responses and Gervais et al. (Assessment, 14, 196–208, 2007) Response Bias Scale, an experimental scale that …

Alexithymia, Craving And Attachment In A Heavy Drinking Population, Fred Thorberg, Ross Young, Karen Sullivan, Michael Lyvers, Jason Connor, Gerald Feeney

Mike Lyvers

Up to fifty per cent of individuals with Alcohol use disorders (AUD) also have alexithymia a personality construct hypothesized to be related to attachment difficulties. The relationship between alexithymia, craving, anxious attachment and alcohol-dependence severitywas examined in254 patients participating in a Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT) programfor alcohol-dependence. Participants completed the Toronto Alexithymia Scale (TAS-20), the Obsessive Compulsive Drinking Scale (OCDS), the Revised Adult Attachment Anxiety Subscale (RAAS-Anxiety) and the Alcohol Use Disorder Identification Test (AUDIT). MANOVA indicated that individuals with alexithymia reported significantly higher levels of totalOCDS, obsessive thoughts about alcohol, and compulsive drinking urges and behavior, compared to the non-alexithymic …

Personality And Task Performance, Trishita Mathew, Richard Hicks Feb 2011

Personality And Task Performance, Trishita Mathew, Richard Hicks

Trishita Mathew

While the positive effects of goal setting and self-efficacy on performance are well established (Bandura, 1997; Locke & Latham, 1990) and it is known that task anxiety can lead to detriments in performance (Locke & Latham, 1990); it is not known which variable affects task performance the most. The present study aimed to identify the strongest predictor of task performance among self-efficacy, goal setting and task anxiety. The study was conducted with a total of 80 participants who were students from an Australian university. It was hypothesised that self-efficacy, goal setting and task anxiety would be significant predictors of task …

Creating Psychological And Legal Contracts Through Hrm Practices: A Strength Of Signals Perspective, Patricia Martinez Dec 2010

Creating Psychological And Legal Contracts Through Hrm Practices: A Strength Of Signals Perspective, Patricia Martinez

Patricia G. Martinez

We integrate the concept of signaling theory to propose that organizations create psychological and legal contracts through their human resource management practices (HRM). Focusing on the strength of the signal generated by HRM practices, we develop a framework for contract creation. Specifically, we define and outline how weak signals generate psychological contracts and strong signals develop legally binding contracts. We provide several examples of HRM hiring practices, the weak and strong signals which they emit and the psychological and legal contracts which they create. Our key contribution is to provide a precise model for understanding the distinction between a psychological …

Online Learning For Older Adults: Dealing With Internet Visual Literacy Skills, Beth Rubin Dec 2010

Online Learning For Older Adults: Dealing With Internet Visual Literacy Skills, Beth Rubin

Beth Rubin

This chapter describes key aspects of designing online courses for older adults who may have lower levels of internet visual literacy than younger learners, as described in existing literature. It describes a case in which such design was implemented and training offered, but was insufficient to support older learners. It recommends specific instructional actions, above and beyond those recommended in the literature, to support online course success.
