Ethnic Identity Influence News Selection, Alexcia D. Richard, Dan Florell
Ethnic Identity Influence News Selection, Alexcia D. Richard, Dan Florell
Posters-at-the-Capitol
American news networks have been known to push a positive biased agenda towards the white population, which in turn leaves minorities displayed in various negative forms. News stations have different ways of reporting on the same story, which may lead people to choose some media outlets over others. The focus of this study was to analyze if ethnic identity influences an individual's selection of news. To find this out a survey was created, the first part of the survey includes the Political Scale. This measure scales the consistency of one’s political ideologies (i.e. conservative, liberal, and neutral) using sources from …

Illicit substance usage has always formed a substantial controversy in society, with various substances being used for such goals as the relief of stress, the enhancement of attention, and the attainment of peer approval (Agarwal, Loukas, & Perry, 2018; Lui, 2019; Maahs, Weidner, & Smith, 2016). The main focus of this study is on collegiate students’ attitudes towards these drugs and the correlation of said attitudes with substance use. It has been found that college students react more positively to substance abuse treatment programs than their non-student counterparts. (Sahker, Acion, & Arndt, 2015) Therefore, it is essential to the success …

Undergraduate Student Research Internships Conference
In January 2021, Covid-19 had already been diagnosed in over 100 million individuals1. Due to the high degree of infectivity, many countries all over the globe attempted to counter the virus by instituting nation-wide lockdowns. The effects of the lockdowns resulting from the Covid-19 Pandemic on the mental health of children and adolescents have drawn a lot of public health attention with many calling for an increased in the understanding of the potential effects the youth of today may have to endure. Two specific mental health illnesses have seemingly worsened are OCD and eating disorders.

Familiarity As A Motivator For Information-Seeking, Danielle Raynes-Goldfinger
Undergraduate Student Research Internships Conference
Curiosity is an integral part of motivation and results in information-seeking behaviors to obtain rewarding information. Theories on curiosity suggest that it occurs when an information gap is detected. Here, we explored whether the assessment of familiarity may result in the induction of curiosity. We employed 3 phases, the first involving memorization of face-name pairs. Next, participants were presented with new and the old faces and were asked to judge whether they fully remembered the name, whether the face was familiar despite the name being unrecallable, or whether the face nor name was familiar. To conclude, we allowed participants to …

Groupme Or Groupcheat? Student Perceptions And Reactions To Violations Of Academic Integrity, Andrew Manocchio, Jennifer Willard
Symposium of Student Scholars
The rise of online classrooms has brought forth new concerns about academic integrity that may not have been present in traditional brick-and-mortar classrooms. Emerging social technology, such as GroupMe, an app used to facilitate group text-messaging, has added a new dimension to academic integrity concerns. However, almost no research has been conducted examining how this technology impacts student behavior in the classroom. The current study investigates the degree to which students perceive various GroupMe conversations as including violations of academic integrity. Participants will be randomly assigned to read one of six GroupMe conversations in a 2 (type of cheating: meeting …

How Risk-Related Statistics, As Reported In News And Social Media, Are Linked To The Use Of The Public Transit System, Prashiddhi Pokhrel
Thinking Matters Symposium
Due to the pandemic, people have started relying more on televisions, news, social media, and other news outlets for guidance. Moreover, with the increasing amount of news, data, and information there is also an increase in the amount of misleading statistics. People’s opinions and decisions significantly depend on the data, statistics, and information that they are exposed to, as well as their sources. For this project, we want to look at how information and its sources are affecting the decision made by the general public for the usage of the Portland Transit System. It is very important to know why …

The Effects Of Diverse Body-Positive Instagram Posts On Body Image Across The Spectrum Of Adulthood, Sophie Nelson, Cindy Miller-Perrin, Jennifer Harriger
Seaver College Research And Scholarly Achievement Symposium
Recent studies have examined the effects of diverse body-positive social media content on levels of body acceptance and appreciation. However, these studies have not addressed how different types of Instagram content affect women across the spectrum of adulthood in an ecologically valid manner. The current study addressed this gap in the literature by examining the effects of diverse body-positive Instagram content on body image in women across the spectrum of adulthood. We randomly assigned 205 women (18-76 years old) to view either diverse body-positive, thin-ideal, or neutral Instagram content. Participants completed a variety of measures in an online survey that …
Domestic Violence In The World Of Athletics, Abbigayle L. Gesler
Domestic Violence In The World Of Athletics, Abbigayle L. Gesler
ONU Student Research Colloquium
There is an ongoing debate whether athletics is linked to domestic violence in professional athletes or individuals who were athletes for a long period of time. The purpose of this research is to see if being an athlete leads to domestic violence, and if so, to find ways to decrease the numbers. Professional athletes with a history of domestic violence will be researched and this could help determine if there is a link between the two. To get an idea on aggression levels in athletes, the Buss & Perry Survey was sent out via email to all Ohio Northern students, …

The Impact Of Social Media Use On Well-Being And Stress In Adolescents And Young Adults, Elisabeth Moeller
ONU Student Research Colloquium
Over the past couple of decades, as technology has become more readily available to individuals, social media sites such as Facebook and Instagram have had an impact on how adolescents and young adults communicate with peers. There has been much debate on whether social media usage negatively impacts the lives of adolescents and adults or not. The present literary review examines findings from 20 studies that investigated the effect of social media usage on the well-being and stress levels of adolescents and young adults. The conclusion of this literary review is that there are many mixed findings in studies examining …

Scholar Week 2016 - present
Presentation Location: Weber Center, Room 101
Abstract
The purpose of this study is to assess the reliability and validity of the 36-item Open Enneagram of Personality Scales (OEPS). Our general hypothesis was that the OEPS would show adequate reliability evidence but not validity evidence. Participants were acquired through a small denominationally affiliated Midwest university, Amazon Mechanical Turk, and social media. Test-retest reliability was done with 249 participants while internal consistency reliability, factor analysis, and correlations with the Big Five Inventory (BFI; John, Donahue, & Kentle) were done using 1039 participants. An average Pearson’s correlation of .68 (range: 0.54 - …

Abstract
Disability advocacy agencies have been pushing for more community integrated employment opportunities for individuals with intellectual disabilities (ID). This study’s aim was to investigate attitudes toward individuals with ID working in the public workplace. A sample of 131 undergraduate students at Olivet Nazarene University were randomly assigned to read one of two different scenarios. One scenario depicted an individual as the co-worker of someone with ID. The other scenario depicted an individual as a customer being helped by someone with ID. Participants then completed the Multidimensional Attitudes Scale Toward Persons With Disabilities …
An Exploratory Study Of Emotional Intelligence Characteristics Between Disciplines In Higher Education And Suggested Curriculum Adjustments, Brad Thomas
Scholar Week 2016 - present
Emotional Intelligence (EI) may be more important to the success of college students than cognitive intelligence and technical skills combined. Recent research has primarily focused on EI in the workplace. However, implications for improving EI skills of college undergraduate students before they enter the workforce appears to be lacking. This quantitative research examined the Emotional Intelligence levels of five different majors to identify differences based on area of study, gender, or other demographic factors. Subsequently, the study aimed to provide suggestions for curriculum development with a goal to better expose students to EI themes. An online survey was offered to …

Investigating Relationships Between Perceived Social Support, Neuroticism, Flexibility, And Covid-19 Related Stress., Patricia Purnell
Scholar Week 2016 - present
Presentation Location: Warming House, Olivet Nazarene University
Abstract
Research suggests that the COVID-19 outbreak has significantly strained mental health and intensified preexisting mental health struggles. Amid the pandemic and the mental strain associated with it, many are concerned with which individuals seem to be struggling with stress related to COVID-19 the most. Specifically, there has been a call for research to incorporate several risk factors and contemplate the significance of flexibility. Therefore, this project will examine if the personality and environmental variables of psychological flexibility, neuroticism, and perceived social support are related to COVID-19 related stress. Olivet Nazarene University …
Situational Versus Characterological Factors In Relation To Loneliness, Lukas Dale
Situational Versus Characterological Factors In Relation To Loneliness, Lukas Dale
Scholar Week 2016 - present
Presentation Location: Warming House, Olivet Nazarene University
Abstract
Loneliness levels were evaluated based on various characterological and situational factors in 146 college-aged students, the majority of which (75.5%) were Caucasian. Using a quasi-experimental/correlational design, participants completed measures assessing personality (neuroticism and extroversion), perceived social support (PSS), fatherlessness, and resident assistant (RA) status. Multiple regression analyses indicated that each of the characterological factors and PSS were significantly correlated with loneliness (all p’s < .005), while fatherlessness and RA status were not significantly correlated with loneliness. Characterological factors accounted for more variance (R2 = .56) than did situational factors (R2 = .25).

Impact Of Mindfulness Training On Test Anxiety In College Students, Lindsay Alcock
Scholar Week 2016 - present
Presentation Location: Warming House, Olivet Nazarene University
Abstract
A considerable number of studies have investigated the relationship between mindfulness techniques and the reduction of anxiety; a smaller number of these studies have looked at test anxiety. Previous studies have used multiple mindfulness techniques to measure the impacts on test anxiety, but few have isolated mindfulness trainings to compare the relative impact of each type on anxiety. The present study isolated two different types of mindfulness trainings to analyze their impact on test anxiety compared to each other and a control group. Three sections of biblical scripture classes were used. …

Perceptions Of Religious Accommodations In The Workplace, Kelsey Ciagala
Perceptions Of Religious Accommodations In The Workplace, Kelsey Ciagala
UNO Student Research and Creative Activity Fair
Although all forms of religious discrimination are understudied (Ghumman et al., 2013), we examined how Christian Americans, the dominant religious group in the U.S., perceive the fairness of religious workplace accommodations. We examined and two potential correlates of their perceptions: religious fundamentalism and prejudice towards outgroup religions. In one session, participants completed measures of religious fundamentalism and prejudice. Approximately three days later, they read three target and five filler descriptions of an employee requesting a workplace accommodation. Participants indicated how fair the request was to the employee, how fair the request was to the employee’s coworkers, how reasonable the request …
