Chronic Musculoskeletal Pain And Marital Adjustment Effects On The Spouse, Marilyn Matson Jones

Chronic musculoskeletal pain can fundamentally alter a marital relationship and have significant effects on marital satisfaction for both the chronic pain patient and spouse. This paper is a critical review of literature on chronic musculoskeletal pain and marital adjustment. Nineteen empirical studies are evaluated and serve as the data base for conclusions and recommendations. Variables which may effect marital satisfaction such as sexual function, spouse solicitousness, effects on the psychological and physical health of the spouse and gender differences are identified. The impact of these variables on marriage and the spouse in particular, is discussed. Implications for further research in …

This study examined the decision-making process of individuals in dual-career couples when faced with a job opportunity in a distant city. The purpose was to determine which factors would be given the most importance by males and females during the decision process.

Each scenario presented an identical situation in which the participant was offered a job in a distant city. Following this paragraph were five brief statements representing five factors; job opportunities for self, job opportunities for spouse, career commitment--self, career commitment--spouse, and economic considerations. Snyder and many other experts in the field of social and clinical psychology, editing a handbook that--at that time--summarized ongoing efforts in what was known as the social-clinical interface. This interface recognized the growing interdependency of these two fields. Up to that time social psychologists were mostly preoccupied with the study of the interpersonal determinants of thought, feeling, and action. This study examined the effectiveness of motivation techniques for increasing performance in a skill training program. A PC based software program provided structured training to increase subjects' typing skills. Motivation was manipulated by the use of goal setting and the self-fulfilling prophecy (SFP), alone and in combination. The moderating effects of self-efficacy on motivation, defined as a generalized "can do" personality orientation, were also examined. Two levels of goal setting were employed: (1) "do your best"; and, (2) a difficult, specific goal. The SFP was tied to the situation, not the person. It was invoked by informing subjects that the …

This study described spousal reactions to loss following a cancer related death. Anticipatory grieving behaviors and variables unique to cancer were examined using Lazarus' cognitive appraisal paradigm. An interview which focused on self-reported changes in thoughts and feelings from time of diagnosis to the time of the death was administered by the researcher to thirty men and/or women whose spouses had died from cancer over the past two and a half years.;Individual responses to the interview questions were categorized according to type of response. Two studies focusing on the need for supportive services and resources for persons with disabilities at universities are described. Both studies took place in the Kitchener-Waterloo community. In Study One, students and faculty at the University of Waterloo and community service workers were surveyed. In Study Two, students and staff at Wilfrid Laurier University and high school students and staff at the Waterloo County Board of Education were surveyed. In total, eighty-two participants were surveyed by interview or questionnaire methods. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of breach of confidentiality on adolescents' level of trust using a pretest/posttest control group experimental design. The study used a normal population of eighth grade middle school students enrolled in average regular education classes in the Hampton Public School System. This research study addressed the question, "Is there a difference in psychosocial developmental levels, as defined by Arthur Chickering, between male and female traditional-aged urban university freshmen with and without learning disabilities?" Twenty students with learning disabilities, as diagnosed by independent practitioners who exhibited spelling disabilities on a writing sample placement test, were compared to two comparable groups of twenty students. One comparison group did not exhibit spelling disability. The second group while demonstrating spelling problems, did not have documentation of learning disabilities. Public attitudes and perceptions largely determine how and to what extent a society and its communities deal with street kids and their families. It was the purpose of the present study to discover the knowledge, perceptions, and attitudes of the Kitchener-Waterloo public regarding street kids and their families. Directors from five local agencies assisted me throughout the process of this thesis. A telephone survey was conducted with a random sample of 128 residents from all geographic areas of Kitchener-Waterloo, using a structured questionnaire.
