In many achievement-driven societies, maintaining productivity amidst an increasingly busy and stressful schedule has become a challenge for many people, particularly those with perfectionistic tendencies. Across two studies, the present research examined why some perfectionists are more prone to procrastination and tested the effectiveness of time management intervention in reducing their procrastination tendencies. Specifically, the current studies adopted a multidimensional approach to measure perfectionism as manifested in perfectionistic strivings and perfectionistic concerns. Study 1 showed that perfectionistic strivings negatively predicted procrastination, while perfectionistic concerns positively predicted procrastination, through the mediating effects of using effective time management strategies. Human actions have caused unprecedented environmental problems, from air and water pollution to climate change. Understanding the demographic influences and psychological antecedents that can motivate more pro-environmentalism (PEV) in individuals could therefore aid in tackling these challenges. The present research aimed to uncover the role that time perspective plays in explaining PEV choices among those of specific socioeconomic contexts. Understanding But Unhelpful: Do Grateful People Value Responsiveness Or Perceived Benefit When Receiving Help?, Elizabeth Lim

Two studies examined the links between the grateful disposition, cognitive appraisals (perceived value and perceived responsiveness), state gratitude, and affiliative intentions (one’s desire to build or maintain relationships with his/her benefactor). In Study 1, 248 participants went through a guided scenario task where they recalled help experiences that were helpful and not so helpful. Dispositional gratitude predicted perceived value and perceived responsiveness (H1A and H1B). These cognitive appraisals in turn predicted state gratitude (H2 and H3). Finally, state gratitude predicted affiliative intentions (H4). Supporting H5A and H5B, cognitive appraisals and state gratitude mediated the link between dispositional gratitude and affiliative …

Building on past studies that have found positive influence of minority member on team creativity, this research examined an underexplored yet crucial topic of a unique opinion holder’s happy and anger emotions on team creativity. Using a collective information processing perspective, this study examined whether the expression of anger and happiness would be beneficial for team creativity by spurring team members to respond qualitatively differently to each other’s ideas during the discussion. Forces Of Corruption: Effects Of Power On Perceptions Of Openness And Information-Sharing, Jiaying Li

In considering the power relations that characterize a manager-subordinate relationship, upward information-sharing is often constrained by relative power differentials. However, a burgeoning volume of research has established that power holders are more attuned to situational goals, thus exhibit greater flexibility in behaviour than powerless persons. This paper therefore proposed a model with epistemic motivation as an intervening variable that enhances information-sharing between dyadic counterparts who have unequal power. However, this model was not supported by findings. Nonetheless, this can be attributed to experimental settings – which future studies should address with construct replication.

This present study investigated the effect of outcome interdependence on different types of deceptions – mutually beneficial and self-interested deception, in a negotiation context. 150 SMU students were recruited to engage in a negotiation task and were randomly assigned to either a high outcome interdependence condition where the monetary reward was awarded based on the points scored by the dyad or a low outcome interdependence condition where the monetary reward was awarded based on the points scored by the individual. When local operational sex ratio skews toward a larger proportion of same-sex to opposite-sex individuals, should members of the surplus sex increase or decrease (economic) efforts on reproduction? The study aims to investigate the effects of individual differences in cognitive habits on the relation between affect and satisfaction in daily life. Specifically, this study aims to examine if individual differences in savouring, rumination and catastrophizing may moderate the effects of positive (PA) and negative affect (NA) on daily satisfaction judgments. 190 undergraduate students from Singapore Management University were recruited to participate in an experience sampling study in which they provided ratings of PA and NA across the day, as well as their end-of-day satisfaction levels over five days. People can make inferences about an individual based on his or her emotional expressions, and these inferences can affect their subsequent behavior. I conducted two experiments to investigate the social perceptions associated with a transgressor’s guilt expression after he or she commits a social transgression, and how these would subsequently affect the cooperative behavior of the victims of the transgression. Study 1 demonstrated that there was an indirect effect of a transgressor’s guilt expression on a victim’s cooperation via the victim’s perception of the transgressor’s benevolence, but not via the victim’s perception of the transgressor’s perspective-taking. While it has been recognized that mood can exert a substantive influence on an individual’s level of creativity, much of the creative needs of organizations today are being fulfilled by brainstorming teams rather than individual employees. As such, researchers have begun to examine the effects of mood on creativity in the context of teams. Research on adaptive memory demonstrates that words and objects are remembered better if they are evaluated in relation to their survival or reproductive fitness value. Recent research on compensatory control indicate a motivation seek out external sources of control (e.g., hierarchical structures) when subjective control is threatened. As exiting/formation of interpersonal relationships within low relational mobility environments is likely to be beyond personal choice and may threaten subjective control, three studies were conducted to investigate whether the compensatory control account could explain the negative relationship found between hierarchy endorsement and low relational mobility. Bioecological exchange theory is proposed, which resolves contradictions between sexual strategies theory and social role theory. People are hypothesized to flexibly shift their mate preferences in response to the percentage of resources they can provide within a couple, but not limitlessly. Men are hypothesized to facultatively shift between 25-100% of provisioning and women from 0-75% of provisioning, as seen in foragers. Both sexes are then hypothesized to trade provisioning for a reciprocal amount of childcare in a partner. People in some parts of the world find positive emotions more desirable than others. What accounts for this variability? We predicted that happiness would be valued less under conditions where the behaviors that happiness promotes would be less beneficial. We analyzed international survey data and United Nations voting records and found that happiness was valued relatively less in environments that had been historically pathogen-rich. Using a series of experimental studies, we showed that people who were experimentally primed by the threat of pathogens judged happiness in others less favorably and found happiness less appropriate. Previous research examining sex differences in negotiation revealed conflicting evidence for its presence. This could be due to the lack of consideration of having a business identity on top of having a gender identity. This suggests the importance of examining how female businesspersons integrate their female and business identities using the construct of gender-professional identity integration (G-PII). Although researchers have shown how the need to reduce internal discrepancies between one’s current level of morality and one’s moral standard and the need to reduce negative social judgment drive pro-social behaviors, it remains unclear if the presence of both these motivations has additive effects on pro-social behaviors. I propose that the answer is no: people operate on a sufficient motivation principle when deciding to behave prosocially, that is, they should be equally prosocial whether one or both motivations are present.
