Stress Levels In First Generation And Continuing Generation College Students, Alejandra L. Aroni Buiza
Stress Levels In First Generation And Continuing Generation College Students, Alejandra L. Aroni Buiza
Psychology | Senior Theses
This study evaluated the experience of the students who are their first in their families to attend college. First Generation College Students (FGCS) are disadvantaged as compared to their Continuing Generation College Student (CGCS) peers because there may be little family knowledge of how to manage a new academic system or how to balance school with outside demands, such as work, finances, and family responsibilities; these are all sources of stress. It was hypothesized that FGCS will have higher general stress scores than CGCS. The Perceived Stress Scale and College Experience Questionnaire (a measure of the amount of family support …
Mental Health Stigma In College Students By Academic Major, Kristen Miller
Mental Health Stigma In College Students By Academic Major, Kristen Miller
Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects
Stigma is best defined as the disapproval and shame felt by people who display characteristics not widely accepted in society. Although mental illness has become more prevalent in society through advocacy and awareness campaigns, it fails to be accepted and often individuals may feel shame that prevents them from seeking help (Dyrbye, Eacker, Durning, Brazeau, Moutier, Massie, S., et al, 2015; Givens & Tjia, 2002). Physicians in particular have been shown to have decreased help-seeking behaviors for psychological issues due to fear of professional repercussions (Dyrbye et al., 2015). Physicians also show increased levels of stress, anxiety, depression, and elevated …

Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a neurological disorder characterized by developmentally inappropriate levels of hyperactivity/impulsivity and inattention. These symptoms result in impairments for individuals across multiple settings and are developmentally inappropriate. While common during childhood, symptoms have been shown to persist into adulthood for 50% or more of those diagnosed before reaching age 18. Although prescription stimulants have been shown to benefit those with ADHD, increased popularity of prescription stimulant misuse among those without ADHD has been reported, despite the potentially harmful side effects that may accompany this use. Specifically, nonmedical use of prescription stimulants during adolescence led to increased …

An Evaluation Of Behavioral Skills Training To Teach Assertiveness Skills To College Students, Savannah Warrington
All Master's Theses
Assertiveness skills are related to a variety of life factors including stress levels, social relationships, social fears, and anxiety. The previous research has shown that engaging in nonassertive behavior can have negative effects, and assertive behaviors can lead to a healthier life (Eldeeb, Enstar, & Eldosoky, 2014; Elliot & Gramling, 1990; Larijani, Aghajanie, Baheiraei, & Neiestanank, 2010; Morgan, 1974). The purpose of the current research was to determine if behavioral skills training (BST) was effective in teaching assertiveness skills to college students and if the skills would generalize to novel situations. BST is a method for teaching skills that uses …

Randomized Control Study Of Neurofeedback With College Students With Adhd, Alycia M. Roberts
Theses and Dissertations
Neurodevelopmental disorders such as ADHD represent a major national problem. There are increasing numbers of students in schools requiring special education services as a result of ADHD, and each of these students costs the U.S. education system approximately $5,000 per year (Robb et al., 2011). There are additional societal costs associated with the disorder, and ADHD can be debilitating for individuals with the disorder and their families (i.e., Barkley & Murphy, 2010; Ginsberg, et al., 2013). The most common treatments are stimulant medication and behavioral training (i.e., Pelham & Fabiano, 2008), but recently neurofeedback (EEG biofeedback) has been receiving a …

Informational And Teaching Effects On Changes In Prejudice Of College Students, Nolan E. Ashman
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
An attempt was made in the present research to investigate the effects of informational source, instructional differences, environment in the college, and awareness of ethnic and religious attitudes as the result of the administration of the test instrument.
Subjects used in the study were drawn from courses in general psychology and basic orientation courses in engineering. All subjects were presented with a revision of the Bogardus Social Distance Scale following the fall quarter of instruction (1960-61 academic year). All but a control group taken from one psychology section received the same scale at the beginning of the instructional period.

A Study Of The Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory As An Index Of Maladjustment In Certain Areas Of College Life, Glenn Rogers Hawkes
A Study Of The Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory As An Index Of Maladjustment In Certain Areas Of College Life, Glenn Rogers Hawkes
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
It is apparent to college workers that inadequate adjustment to college loses many potential scholars to the world. It is further apparent that many students fall short of realizing their full capabilities because of lack of adjustment. To meet this condition, more and more colleges and universities are instituting and developing counseling services. Because of the increases cost of such service and the extended time involved, it has become apparent that any device which improves the efficiency of counseling is highly desirable.
