Coming Out In Later Adulthood: Are The Stresses Different?, Chris Ng

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

The goal of the present study is to investigate whether there is a difference between people who “come out” at a later age compared to those who came out at a “younger age.” There is a dearth of research on the stress of sexual minorities in general and even less research done on the stress of older sexual minorities. The present study also aims to investigate whether

The hypotheses for the present study include the following:

Hypothesis 1: Older LGB adults will have greater Internalized Homonegativity.

Hypothesis 2: Perceived Social Support from Family and Friends will mediate the relationship between …

The Link Between Humor And Personality, Alexander R. Hawley Jan 2021

The Link Between Humor And Personality, Alexander R. Hawley

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

This study sought to expand upon the research on humor and personality by attempting to find connections between the two through a digital survey. The participants of this study were 51 individuals obtained through social media that were 74.5% women, 23.5% men, and 2% non-binary. The Humor Styles Questionnaire and Midlife Development Inventory were used to assess humor styles and personality factors. Then, a correlation matrix was computed to examine associations between the two sets of variables. Four significant relationships were found: self-enhancing and openness to experience, self-enhancing and extraversion, aggressive and agreeableness, and self-defeating and neuroticism. These results can …

A Meta-Analysis On Non-Cognitive Predictors Of College Student Academic Performance, Maggie Allphin Jan 2020

A Meta-Analysis On Non-Cognitive Predictors Of College Student Academic Performance, Maggie Allphin

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

There are many factors that affect student success, often measured with academic performance. Research has shown that students attribute stress as a major factor that affects their academic performance (Frazier et al., 2018). This suggests that the ability to cope with stress can improve academic performance. Studies have shown that higher emotional intelligence is linked to higher ability to cope with stress (Wang, Xie, and Cui, 2016). In this meta-analysis, I looked into the relationship across multiple studies between emotional intelligence, grade point average, and other non-cognitive predictors. For the first meta-analysis, seven records relating emotional intelligence to academic performance …

Examining Links Between The Dark Tetrad And Gender Conformity To Women's Use Of Sexual Deception, David Priebe Jan 2020

Examining Links Between The Dark Tetrad And Gender Conformity To Women's Use Of Sexual Deception, David Priebe

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

Since the introduction of the concept of the Dark Triad, a great deal of literature has been published regarding its validity, predictive power, and effective uses. One typical feature of Dark Triad research that has been relatively absent in the recent literature has been the inclusion of other personal or contextual factors to improve the predictive validity of the Dark Triad. In this paper, I attempt to explain how a factor such as gender conformity in women may mediate the relationship of Dark Triad scores to the outcome of sexual deception. Further analysis also attempts to reason the utility of …

The Effects Of Rehabilitation On The Ability To Reintegrate Into Society, Benjamin J. Troxell Jan 2018

The Effects Of Rehabilitation On The Ability To Reintegrate Into Society, Benjamin J. Troxell

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

With crime and recidivism rates so high in the United States, a focus on reintegration and rehabilitation are key in order to allow these individuals to be productive, successful members of society upon release. The following research will investigate the struggles of post-incarceration life for several individuals in a particular rehabilitation program and try to understand how the program they are a part of is aiding them with these struggles. Factors detrimental to reintegration, protective factors against recidivism, environmental factors that aid reintegration, and employment post-incarceration will be examined to gain a better understanding of the life ex-offenders face and …

The Dark Tetrad And Rape Myth Acceptance, Grace Boland Jan 2018

The Dark Tetrad And Rape Myth Acceptance, Grace Boland

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

With the influx of research into the "dark" personality traits, as well as the prevalence of sexual assault and rape, specifically on college campuses, it has become important to explore the possible relationships between the Dark Tetrad of personality (i.e., sub-clinical levels of narcissism, psychopathy, Machiavellianism, and sadism) and rape myth acceptance. This study was an extension of a prior study by Jonason, Girgis, and Milne-Home (2017) looking at these traits, without sadism, and rape myth acceptance. Positive relationships between each of the Dark Tetrad traits and each rape myth were found, with the strongest correlation being between sadism and …
