Unmanned aerial systems (UASs) in general and UAS safety in particular have so far received little attention in the science, technology and society (STS) literature. This paper therefore reports on sev- eral (military) cases of this relatively new technology, focusing specifi cally on issues of safety. Quite often, safety of technology is considered the result of a rational process – one of a series of rational, often calculative, linear steps. The paper’s results suggest that establishing safety in military UASs is very much a social process. Prior research has documented cultural dimensions that broadly characterize between-culture variations in Western and East Asian societies and that bicultural individuals can flexibly change their behaviors in response to different cultural contexts. In this article, we studied cultural differences and behavioral switching in the context of the fast emerging, naturally occurring online social networking, using both self-report measures and content analyses of online activities on two highly popular platforms, Facebook and Renren (the “Facebook of China”). Results showed that while Renren and Facebook are two technically similar platforms, the Renren culture is perceived as more collectivistic than the Facebook culture. …

Rats worked under a fixed-ratio 45 schedule of reinforcementduring 4-hr long sessions either in sixteen 1S-min work periods (2rats in Experiments 1 and 3) or in a single work period (3 rats inExperiments 2 and 4) while receiving varying amounts of externalfood. In Experiments 1 and 2, a fixed amount of external food wasprovided in different conditions., whereas in Experiments 3 and 4,both earned and total food intake were fixed to a dally maximum.Consumption and responding decreased with availability comparedto nonavailability of external food and systematically declined withincreasing amounts of external food in progressively openeconomies.
