Task Demands And Age-Related Differences In Retrieval And Response Inhibition, Steffen Wilson, Katherine Kipp, Jennifer Daniels Oct 2003

Task Demands And Age-Related Differences In Retrieval And Response Inhibition, Steffen Wilson, Katherine Kipp, Jennifer Daniels

Steffen Wilson

This study investigates the role of task demands on children's ability to inhibit irrelevant information using a block-cued directed-forgetting task. Recall performance was compared in a block-cued directed-forgetting task in which task demands had been decreased by presenting blocks of semantically related words with that in which unrelated words were presented. Inhibition patterns of recall were found at a younger age in the task that contained the related words than in the task that contained the unrelated words. These results suggest that previous results charting the development of cognitive inhibition may not have been exclusively the product of the development …

Limits Of The Retrieval Inhibition Construct: List Segregation In Directed-Forgetting, Steffen Wilson, Katherine Kipp, Kevin Chapman Sep 2003

Limits Of The Retrieval Inhibition Construct: List Segregation In Directed-Forgetting, Steffen Wilson, Katherine Kipp, Kevin Chapman

Steffen Wilson

The authors hypothesized that retrieval inhibition in list method directed forgetting could be improved by presenting a task that maximized the segregation step of the retrieval-inhibition process. In Experiment 1, they presented lists of semantically related words in a list method directed-forgetting task to maximize retrieval inhibition. Contrary to predictions, this manipulation eliminated the directed-forgetting effect. The authors further investigated the results of Experiment 1 in Experiments 2 and 3 by manipulating recall instructions and by presenting lists that contained both a categorized and an unrelated list-half. They found directed-forgetting effects for semantically related word lists when participants were asked …

Simple And Effective Methods For Talking About Teaching, Steffen Wilson, Katherine Kipp Feb 2003

Simple And Effective Methods For Talking About Teaching, Steffen Wilson, Katherine Kipp

Steffen Wilson

Traditionally, college teaching has been an individual endeavor. An instructor prepares her course without the assistance of colleagues, delivers course material without feedback from peers, assigns grades without the guidance of others, and handles problems as they arise on her own. There is something secure and sacred about this privatization of teaching, and we often are uncomfortable opening up this area of our professional lives to others. The opposite is true for our scholarship; we feel uncomfortable moving forward on a research project without long discussions with our colleagues, seeking their input and opinions on the numerous aspects of research.

Principles Of Child Rearing: The Challenge Of Being A Parent/Caregiver., Karin Bartoszuk Dec 2002

Principles Of Child Rearing: The Challenge Of Being A Parent/Caregiver., Karin Bartoszuk

Karin Bartoszuk

Of all the jobs in the world, raising children may be the trickiest. Children are often hard to understand. They seem impossible to control. Sometimes, no matter how hard we try, it seems that everything we do is wrong.
No one can make child rearing easy. But by learning more about children and their needs and by talking to other parents, we can learn how to make us more effective. With this information we hope to help you find ways to be more effective. We also hope you will talk with other parents/caregivers who can give you good ideas.

Principles Of Child Rearing: Something Better Than Punishment, Karin Bartoszuk

Karin Bartoszuk

When we think of discipline, we may think of threats, and punishment. They may be the most common ways that parents/caregivers deal with their children’s misbehavior.

Principles Of Child Rearing: Building Family Strength, Karin Bartoszuk

Karin Bartoszuk

Most families face difficult strains regarding time, money, or emotions. Sometimes homes become the place where everyone is worn-out or angry. But, in spite of these difficulties, there are ways that our families can remain strong and happy.

Principles Of Child Rearing: Talking So Young Children Understand., Karin Bartoszuk

Karin Bartoszuk

People who are good at talking to young children are sensitive to children’s developing language abilities. They are aware that young children are new at understanding language, so that talking to toddlers and preschoolers is different from talking to older children and adults.

New Paradigm In Classroom Assessment: The Externally Trained (Et) Observer Model, Oscar T. Mcknight, Ronald Paugh Dec 2002

New Paradigm In Classroom Assessment: The Externally Trained (Et) Observer Model, Oscar T. Mcknight, Ronald Paugh

Oscar T McKnight Ph.D.

Traditional classroom assessment techniques are fraught with weaknesses and inherent contradictions. The proposed paradigm in classroom assessment - the Externally Trained (ET) Observer Model - is not a traditional classroom assessment model. It is a quality control measure which ultimately benefits both students and instructor
