A Call To Integrate Religious Communities Into Practice: The Case Of Sikhs, Muninder Kaur Ahluwalia, Anjali Alimchandani

Sikhs, an ethnic and religious minority group in the United States, have seen a significant shift in their social location since 9/11. They have experienced harassment and violence beyond race and ethnicity to the visible markers of the religion (e.g., turbans). In this article, we address how counseling psychology is uniquely positioned to work with Sikhs given these circumstances. We provide an overview of Sikh Americans, including specific experiences that may affect treatment such as race-based traumatic injury, identification as a part of a visible religious minority group, and the impact of historic community-level trauma. Efficacy Of Self-Care And Traditional Mental Health Counseling In Treating Vicarious Traumatization Among Counselors Of Hurricane Katrina Survivors, Mary Alice Many

The population consisted of 9,000 Gulf Coast Licensed Professional Counselors. Surveys were returned by 609 participants. In the researcher-developed demographic survey, 586 individuals responded to the questions regarding age, gender, ethnicity, and years of counseling experience; 585 individuals responded to questions about exposure to prior trauma, and personal Katrina-related losses; 578 individuals responded to the question about the percentage of their work week that was spent counseling victims, and 579 individuals responded to questions regarding the type of mental health care strategy they participated in. Knowledge and application of theory are integral to the practice of psychotherapy. Despite the focus on theory in clinical training, little is known about how psychotherapy trainees experience, learn about, and develop a theoretical orientation. This phenomenological study used grounded theory methods to examine 15 counseling and clinical psychology doctoral students' experiences developing a theoretical orientation. The specific purpose of the study was to understand in depth these trainees' perspectives on and attributions about learning and developing expertise with a specific theoretical orientation.

Developing A Taxonomy Of Helpful And Harmful Practices For Clinical Work With Boys And Men, Ronald Levant, James Mahalik, David Tager, Christopher Mackowiak, Glenn Good

This study drew upon the knowledge base of APA-member practitioners to develop a taxonomy of helpful and harmful practices for treatment with boys and men. Four-hundred seventy five APA-member practitioners solicited from practice-related divisions provided responses to four open-ended questions about helpful and harmful practices in working with boys and men. Qualitative analyses revealed 10 themes that emerged from the analyses. Beneficial and sensitive practices included addressing gender socialization and gender sensitive issues as they apply to boys and men in psychological practice.
