Background: This study surveyed the relationship between locus of control and academic achievement in students at Allameh Tabataba'i University. Method: This was a descriptive–correlative research study that included 132 undergraduate students enrolled in the university during the academic year 1391-92. For data collection, we used a locus of control questionnaire designed by Julan Rutter and students' GPAs. T- test and Pearson correlation coefficient were used for data analyses. Results: According to the results, there was no significant difference in GPAs in the internal and external locus of control between male and female students. Brain development, and particularly structures involved in executive functioning, occurs at different rates in children, leading to differential performance in school. Due to neuroanatomical changes secondary to the stress response, children who have experienced stress as a result of poverty and traumatic events may be at increased risk for cognitive difficulties, including attention, executive functioning, and processing speed (Blair, Granger, & Razza, 2005; DeBellis, Hooper, & Sapia, 2005). Prevalence rates among urban children suggest that 70-100% have been exposed to trauma (Dempsey, Overstreet, & Moely, 2000; Macy, Baryry, & Noam, 2003). Previous literature has evidenced that young African American males are experiencing less academic success than their Caucasian male and African American female counterparts (Davis, Williams, & Williams, 2004; Flores, 2007). The deceleration of achievement in this population has spawned some inquiry into the struggles of African American students. However, investigators have primarily examined differences in sex, school attributes, socioeconomic status, family structure, and other external factors.
