Identification And Parasocial Relationships With Characters From Star Wars: The Force Awakens., Alice E. Hall Dec 2018

Identification And Parasocial Relationships With Characters From Star Wars: The Force Awakens., Alice E. Hall

Alice Hall

This study investigated identification and parasocial relationships (PSRs) with media characters by examining viewers’ responses to the movie Star Wars: The Force Awakens through an online survey of 113 audience members who saw the film in a theater within a month of its release. Participants reported stronger PSR and identification with the more familiar characters from the first trilogy than with the new characters introduced in the film, although the association with identification was limited to older participants. Star Wars fanship was associated with identification and PSR for old and new characters. Familiarity with the earlier films was associated with …

Uav Sensor Operator Training Enhancement Through Heat Map Analysis, Ashish Amresh, John Femiani, Jason Fairfield, Adam Fairfield Apr 2018

Uav Sensor Operator Training Enhancement Through Heat Map Analysis, Ashish Amresh, John Femiani, Jason Fairfield, Adam Fairfield

Ashish Amresh

Heat map based data visualization and mining is an emerging area in game engine design and architecture. Employed by many state of the art game engines and popular commercial games, this technology helps populate and collate player activity and behavior to better inform the system for further action. Simulation and serious games can tremendously benefit by applying heat map based visualization for the purposes of analyzing and tracking player behavior. Heat maps are time varying texture maps that represent a chosen activity over a certain grid at any particular interval of elapsed time. In this paper results of applying a …

Towards Decrypting Attractiveness Via Multi-Modality Cue, Tam Nguyen, Si Liu, Bingbing Ni, Jun Tan, Yong Rui, Shuicheng Yan Nov 2016

Towards Decrypting Attractiveness Via Multi-Modality Cue, Tam Nguyen, Si Liu, Bingbing Ni, Jun Tan, Yong Rui, Shuicheng Yan

Tam Nguyen

Decrypting the secret of beauty or attractiveness has been the pursuit of artists and philosophers for centuries. To date, the computational model for attractiveness estimation has been actively explored in the computer vision and multimedia community, yet with the focus mainly on facial features. In this article, we conduct a comprehensive study on female attractiveness conveyed by single/multiple modalities of cues, that is, face, dressing and/or voice; the aim is to discover how different modalities individually and collectively affect the human sense of beauty. To extensively investigate the problem, we collect the Multi-Modality Beauty (M2B) dataset, which is annotated with …

Human-Robot Versus Human-Human Relationship Impact On Comfort Levels Regarding In Home Privacy, Keith R. Macarthur, Thomas G. Macgillivray, Eva L. Parkhurst, Peter A. Hancock Mar 2016

Human-Robot Versus Human-Human Relationship Impact On Comfort Levels Regarding In Home Privacy, Keith R. Macarthur, Thomas G. Macgillivray, Eva L. Parkhurst, Peter A. Hancock

When considering in-group vs. out-group concepts, certain degrees of human relationships naturally assume one of two categories. Roles such as immediate and extended family members and friends tend to fit quite nicely in the in-group category. Strangers, hired help, as well as acquaintances would likely be members of the out-group category due to a lack of personal relation to the perceiver. Though an out-group member may possess cultural, socioeconomic, or religious traits that an individual may perceive as in-group, the fact that they are an unknown stranger should immediately place them in the out-group. From [K1] this notion, it can be inferred …

Cognitive Activity Support Tools: Design Of The Visual Interface, Paul Parsons Sep 2015

Cognitive Activity Support Tools: Design Of The Visual Interface, Paul Parsons

Paul Parsons

This dissertation is broadly concerned with interactive computational tools that support the performance of complex cognitive activities, examples of which are analytical reasoning, decision making, problem solving, sense making, forecasting, and learning. Examples of tools that support such activities are visualization-based tools in the areas of: education, information visualization, personal information management, statistics, and health informatics. Such tools enable access to information and data and, through interaction, enable a human-information discourse. In a more specific sense, this dissertation is concerned with the design of the visual interface of these tools. This dissertation presents a large and comprehensive theoretical framework to …

Clinical Data Warehousing: A Business Analytics Approach For Managing Health Data, Lekha Narra, Tony Sahama, Peta Stapleton Sep 2015

Clinical Data Warehousing: A Business Analytics Approach For Managing Health Data, Lekha Narra, Tony Sahama, Peta Stapleton

Peta B. Stapleton

Heterogeneous health data is a critical issue when managing health information for quality decision making processes. In this paper we examine the efficient aggregation of lifestyle information through a data warehousing architecture lens. We present a proof of concept for a clinical data warehouse architecture that enables evidence based decision making processes by integrating and organising disparate data silos in support of healthcare services improvement paradigms.

Using Meta-Ethnography To Synthesize Research: A Worked Example Of The Relations Between Personality On Software Team Processes, Fabio Q. B. Silva Dr., Shirley S. J. O. Cruz, Tatiana B. Gouveia, Luiz Fernando Capretz Jan 2014

Using Meta-Ethnography To Synthesize Research: A Worked Example Of The Relations Between Personality On Software Team Processes, Fabio Q. B. Silva Dr., Shirley S. J. O. Cruz, Tatiana B. Gouveia, Luiz Fernando Capretz

Luiz Fernando Capretz

Context: The increase in the number of qualitative and mixed-methods research published in software engineering has created an opportunity for further knowledge generation through the synthesis of studies with similar aims. This is particularly true in the research on human aspects because the phenomena of interest are often better understood using qualitative research. However, the use of qualitative synthesis methods is not widespread and worked examples of their consistent application in software engineering are needed. Objective: To explore the use of meta-ethnography in the synthesis of empirical studies in software engineering through an example using studies about the relations between …

A Decomposition Approach For A New Test-Scenario In Complex Problem Solving, Michael Engelhart, Joachim Funke, Sebastian Sager Jun 2012

A Decomposition Approach For A New Test-Scenario In Complex Problem Solving, Michael Engelhart, Joachim Funke, Sebastian Sager

Joachim Funke

Over the last years, psychological research has increasingly used computer-supported tests, especially in the analysis of complex human decision making and problem solving. The approach is to use computer-based test scenarios and to evaluate the performance of participants and correlate it to certain attributes, such as the participant's capacity to regulate emotions. However, two important questions can only be answered with the help of modern optimization methodology. The first one considers an analysis of the exact situations and decisions that led to a bad or good overall performance of test persons. The second important question concerns performance, as the choices …
