Examination Of Psychopathic Traits And Attention Using The Image Based Parity Task, Veronica Claudia Llamas
Examination Of Psychopathic Traits And Attention Using The Image Based Parity Task, Veronica Claudia Llamas
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Psychopathy has been defined as including deficits in affective, cognitive, and behavioral functioning. Due to the severity of these deficits, several etiological theories have emerged in an attempt to better understand the personality construct. The response modulation hypothesis (RMH; Patterson & Newman, 1993) is a theory growing in popularity among researchers and posits that an inability to reallocate attentional resources to peripheral information moderates the affective and behavioral deficits commonly documented within individuals with psychopathy. Thus, the present study attempted to examine to test the validity of the RMH in a non-incarcerated population. The results somewhat support the theory that …
Interrelationships Between Sensation Seeking And Psychopathy, Casey S. Iwai
Interrelationships Between Sensation Seeking And Psychopathy, Casey S. Iwai
Psychology Theses & Dissertations
Psychopathic and sensation seeking traits are often correlated; however, sensation seeking alone is not inherently pathological. This study seeks to investigate possible moderating variables between individuals who are high on sensation seeking but low on measures of psychopathic or antisocial traits. Specifically, a positive family environment is hypothesized to be a moderating variable in the development of psychopathic traits among high sensation seekers. A college student sample assessed for psychopathy, sensation seeking, and family functioning is used to test this hypothesis. Significant relationships between all three constructs were found. Similar to previous data, sensation seeking was found to correlate with …
Ppi-R: Factor Structure In A Diverse Subclinical Sample, Veronica Claudia Llamas
Ppi-R: Factor Structure In A Diverse Subclinical Sample, Veronica Claudia Llamas
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Literature examining the factor structure of the Psychopathic Personality Inventory – Revised (PPI-R) has yielded mixed results. This study attempted to examine the three proposed factor structures (one-, two-, or three-) for the PPI-R utilizing a mixed gender undergraduate sample. Results demonstrated poor fit for each of the three proposed factor structures within the present sample. Post-hoc exploratory factor analysis of the PPI-R items revealed that seven of the eight original subscales from the measure were found to be salient. Rebellious nonconformity was the only subscale that was not able to be extracted. Furthermore, only 81 out of the 131 …
Towards An Improved Understanding Of The Heterogeneity Of Violence: A Test Of The Clinical Utility Of The Reactive-Instrumental Distinction Among Adult Male Inmates, Jennifer L. Tapscott
Towards An Improved Understanding Of The Heterogeneity Of Violence: A Test Of The Clinical Utility Of The Reactive-Instrumental Distinction Among Adult Male Inmates, Jennifer L. Tapscott
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
Purpose: Interpersonal violence exacts a high cost on society, both in terms of its impact on victims and its associated financial burden. To better understand the heterogeneity of violence, forensic researchers often distinguish between reactive violence, which occurs in response to provocation, and instrumental violence, which is goal-oriented. Although these subtypes of aggression have been associated with unique psychosocial vulnerabilities in samples of children or community adults, the current study examined whether this pattern of divergence generalized to an adult correctional sample. Method: Participants were 151 adult male federal inmates. Inmates completed self-report measures of childhood maltreatment, social-cognitive processing, and …
Psychopathy And The Hexaco Personality Model, M. Todd Lobrano
Psychopathy And The Hexaco Personality Model, M. Todd Lobrano
Doctoral Dissertations
Within the recently published DSM-5, alternative diagnostic criteria for personality disorders have been offered (American Psychiatric Association [APA], 2013). These changes allow for a more dimensional diagnostic system than has been previously used while maintaining some aspects of a categorical system (Skodol et al., 2011). These changes also include a description of specific traits that characterize personality disorders and make it possible for measures of normal personality to have a more significant impact in their diagnosis. Relevant to the present study are the changes in the diagnosis of antisocial personality disorder and psychopathy, considered by many to be an extreme …
