“Covid 19, Its Effect On Stateless Persons And The Response Of The International Community”, Tobi Achudume

The Journal of International Relations, Peace Studies, and Development

A good number of research has been carried out on how COVID-19 has affected the State in terms of population, economy and health services of different countries. However, a group that is often excluded from these statistics is the “stateless person”. This article critically examines the presence of stateless persons in states and the different categories of these that exist. These stateless persons are made up of refugees and migrants and people that have come from very poor conditions of living. In both developed and developing countries, these persons are the most vulnerable and exposed to the pandemic. This article …

The Psychological Effects Of Israel’S Security Narrative On Palestinians In The West Bank And Gaza And Its Implications For Conflict Management, Gabrielle Childs

The Journal of International Relations, Peace Studies, and Development

Israel began constructing a separation barrier in 2003 in response to increasing terrorism and suicide bombings by the Palestinians during the Second Intifada (Dowty, 2005, p. 171). The separation barrier is an elaborate 400-mile security system of concrete walls, fences, barricades and checkpoints built to protect Israeli citizens (Vick & Arik, 2010). The wall portion of the barrier was constructed of thick reinforced concrete, stands approximately 25 feet tall, and separates the West Bank and Israel boundaries. There is bitter contention over whether the barrier was properly placed along the official partition boundaries. The concrete barriers were built in the …

The Hidden Child: Analyzing The Cyclical Nature Of Statelessness And Violations Of Reproductive Autonomy, Simone Lieban Levine, Kelsey J. Peden Aug 2021

The Hidden Child: Analyzing The Cyclical Nature Of Statelessness And Violations Of Reproductive Autonomy, Simone Lieban Levine, Kelsey J. Peden

The Journal of International Relations, Peace Studies, and Development

Statelessness is a reproductive justice issue. When states explicitly or implicitly regulate or restrict reproduction, it results in children being born into statelessness. When there is a risk that a child will be born into statelessness, it both impacts the parents’ ability to parent with dignity and can have a chilling effect on the parents’ decision to have a child in the first place. In this way, statelessness results both in and from violations of reproductive autonomy. To combat statelessness, the international human rights community must use a reproductive justice lens to examine the ways that policies related to regulating …

Fixing A Hole: Contemporary Security Issues In Africa, Zachary Hadley Apr 2021

Fixing A Hole: Contemporary Security Issues In Africa, Zachary Hadley

The Journal of International Relations, Peace Studies, and Development

In the twenty-first century, complex and dynamic challenges within Africa are often borderless. With the ability to scale exponentially, localized conflicts can quickly destabilize regions. Since the early 2000s, scholarly efforts to explicate transnational challenges has led to a growing body of literature dedicated to the African continent. While promising, the corpora of secondary literatures often lack conceptual rigor and depth — requiring students, researchers and scholars to thread coherent narratives across diverse sets of government records, media reports, and firsthand accounts.

Contemporary Security Issues in Africa by William A. Taylor attempts to fill this void by serving as a …

A Crisis Of Globalization: A Review Essay, Matthew Rochat Apr 2021

A Crisis Of Globalization: A Review Essay, Matthew Rochat

The Journal of International Relations, Peace Studies, and Development

Ian Bremmer's book Us vs. Them: The Failure of Globalism focuses on the discontents of globalization and draws a link between economic insecurity and tides of political polarization that have swept across states, splintering segments of the population and leaving deep social fractures in their wake. In this review essay, I expand on Bremmer’s argument by incorporating two other recent works of global political economy that shed light on the current state of globalization, The Globalization Paradox: Democracy and the Future of the World Economy by Dani Rodrik and Global Capitalism and the Crisis of Humanity by William Robinson. Based …
