The Church As Counterculture, Michael Budde
The Church As Counterculture, Michael Budde
Michael Budde
The question, "What does it mean to be 'the church'?" has always been among the most controversial and of vital concern to political, economic, and ecclesial leaders alike. How it is answered influences whether Christianity will be a force for legitimating or subverting existing secular relations of power, influence, and privilege. The Church as Counterculture enters the debates on Christian identity, purpose, and organization by calling for the churches to reclaim their roles as "communities of disciples"-distinct and distinctive groups formed by the priorities and practices of Jesus-to constitute a countercultural reality and challenge to secular society and existing power …

What Has Eastern Europe Taught Us About The Democratisation Literature (And Vice Versa)?, Petr Kopecky, Cas Mudde
Cas Mudde
The relationship between Eastern Europe and democratisation studies so far has been highly asymmetric. In contrast to the vast contribution, both in data and theory, of Eastern Europe to the democratisation literature, the latter has been of only modest use to the understanding of the democratisation processes in post communist Europe. Despite the growing number of empirically grounded assessments, most notably of degrees of democratic consolidation within East-Central Europe, there is still very little agreement on what exactly is democratic transition and consolidation or on what explains the seemingly widening gap between East-Central Europe on the one hand and the …

The Netherlands: Explaining The Limited Success Of The Extreme Right, Cas Mudde, Joop Van Holsteyn
Cas Mudde
The third wave of right-wing extremism in West Europe, which started in the early 1980s (Von Beyme, 1988), did not pass the Netherlands by. This chapter deals with Dutch manifestation of extreme right parties, most notably its main representative, the Centrumdemocraten (Centre Democrats, CD). It presents a portrait of this party, describing its history, organization and ideology, and electorate, as well as a discussion of the reasons for its limited success compared to equivalent parties in countries like Austria, Belgium and France.

Explaining Different Paths Of Democratization: The Czech And Slovak Republics, Cas Mudde
Explaining Different Paths Of Democratization: The Czech And Slovak Republics, Cas Mudde
Cas Mudde
Since the ‘velvet split’ in January 1993, the Czech and Slovak Republics seem to have developed into completely different directions: towards a role model and a problematic case of post-communist democracy respectively. This supposedly sharp difference in development provides in itself a very interesting topic for study, but also makes for a very useful set-up to evaluate the many theories that have been offered to explain (un)successful processes of democratization in Eastern Europe. In this article, we compare the two countries in light of their degree of ‘democratic consolidation’, to establish in more detail in which way they actually differ. …
