Anthony Zannella is a Seton Hall University 2019 graduate and a student of the Honors Program. He majored in Political Science and Philosophy. After taking classes that focused on international relations, he was inspired to write his thesis to further broaden his knowledge about geo-politics and United States foreign policy. Post-graduation, he plans to apply to law school and continue to study international trends that are linked to United States foreign policy. The Syrian refugee crisis can be described as one of the biggest, if not largest, humanitarian crisis of the 21st century. The crisis is a result of an ongoing civil war between rebel groups and the government forces of the Assad regime. Since the beginning of the war in 2011, over 400,000 have been killed and a combined 11 million have been displaced either internally or externally from their homes (Human Rights Watch, World Report 2018). There appears to exist today a generational tug-of-war between Millennials and Baby Boomers. Baby Boomers tend to see Millennials as lazy kids who do not appreciate the value of hard work, spend all day glued to their cell phones, and expect successes to be handed to them on a silver platter. Rachel's goal in this paper is to advance a moderate voice on a controversial presidency. She uses text analysis techniques and a program outside her comfort zone called ATLAS.ti, with the help of her faculty mentor Dr. Roseanne Mirabella, to analyze four campaign speeches by President Trump. She hopes future research will take advantage of text analysis to explore how rhetorical patterns and cues might provide insight into the characteristics of leaders and elected officials.
