As the state affiliate for the National Endowment for the Humanities, FHC provides grants for public humanities programs and resources on a wide range of Florida topics. This collection offers a valuable resource for researchers looking to gain insight on cultural, recreational, and educational projects and programs offered to the public throughout the state of Florida from 2001 to 2005. Commander Melville J. Walters was born in Washington D.C. and joined the Navy in 1943; between 1957 and 1958, during what was known as the International Geophysical Year, Walters was a supply officer at the McMurdo Naval Air Facility in the Antarctica. The McMurdo Sound Naval base, along with other stations like it, was used for Operation Deep Freeze III, a Navy supported research expedition undertaken to gather scientific data about the Antarctic. Nigel J. Watson, longtime real estate agent and activist, moved into the Presbyterian Towers in 2004. Located at 430 Bay Street NE in downtown St. Petersburg, this facility has offered senior residential living since opening in 1968. In the early 1960s, Southwest Florida Presbyterians sought solutions to the problem of people (mostly retirees) who had difficulty locating affordable housing. With loan assistance from the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development, local Presbyteries began to build facilities. Ms. Susan B. Donoff, a graduate student in history at the University of South Florida, investigated the horrific 25 March 1911 fire at the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory in New York City. As part of her research, she sought to examine how the fire transformed the labor movement and how notable leaders of the time—especially Frances Perkins and members of Tammany Hall— assumed important roles in promoting progressive reforms. Perkins, who later served as the first female cabinet member when she began her tenure as President Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s Secretary of Labor, championed the plight of those who perished in the …

A member of the USF faculty since 1980, Raymond O. Arsenault specializes in the social, political, and environmental history and historiography of the American South, though his teaching and research interests cover nearly all areas of American history, culture, and civilization. He serves as the John Hope Franklin Professor of Southern History. In the summer of 1998, Arsenault donated some of his research files and miscellaneous materials to the Nelson Poynter Memorial Library. In 2001, 2004, and 2008, he sent additional materials for preservation as part of this collection. This guide includes accessions through the spring of 2008.

Winston Bridges came to the campus as an assistant professor of education in 1970. He taught primarily in the area of social foundations of education. When Dean Karen Spear departed for Colorado in June 1990, Bridges—then coordinator of the College of Education at USF St. Petersburg—accepted an appointment to serve as interim dean. Bridges continued the focus on interdisciplinary studies started by deans Lowell Davis and Karen Spear. Shortly after H. The College of Marine Science, a Tampa-based academic unit of the University of South Florida, physically resides on the St. Petersburg campus. Since its beginnings as a Marine Science Institute in the late 1960s, this unit and its mission have grown to occupy an academic department within the College of Natural Sciences, later the College of Arts and Sciences, and as a distinct college within the University. The thirteen photographic prints included in this collect represent images primarily from the early years of the St. Petersburg campus.

The Clearwater Sun newspaper was published between 1914 and 1990. Few original issues prior to the 1970s exist, and issues from the earliest years (pre-1926) do not exist in microfilm. The St. Petersburg Evening Independent served as the Sunshine City’s afternoon newspaper between 1906 and 1986. Similar to the Sun, early issues rarely exist. This collection represents a small sample of original issues of the Clearwater Sun and the Evening Independent from the end of the Second World War and the beginning of the Korean War. (Jeannie) McDaniel-Pappas, a Florida native and alumni of Eckerd College’s Program for Experienced Learners, donated this collection of family records to the Nelson Poynter Memorial Library on 30 July 2007. These materials document the activities of her father, Archie Tillman McDaniel II, a veteran of the Second World War who served in Japan after the war came to an end and became an early advocate for civil rights.

Doris J. (Jeannie) McDaniel-Pappas, a Florida native and alumni of Eckerd College’s Program for Experienced Learners, donated this collection of postcards and brochures to the Nelson Poynter Memorial Library on 30 July 2007. Jeannie and her husband, Andrew M. Pappas Sr., collected these items during their family vacations. Materials cover locations in St. Petersburg, greater Pinellas County, other parts of Florida (with a strong emphasis on the Florida Keys/Key West, and some locations outside of Florida (most notably the Bahamas). Most of the materials date from the mid-1970s into the early to mid-1980s.

These issues of Bohemia, a magazine published in Havana, Cuba, cover the years 1998 through 2001. A native of West Tampa born December 1903, Rodriguez lived her entire life in West Tampa and Hillsborough County. She passed away at the age of 101 on 11 September 2005. In the late 1990s, she began a dialogue with residents of her ancestral homeland, Cuba. In time, some Cubans began mailing her copies of Bohemia that often included hand-written notes or letters about their lives. Some people also wrote on the covers and inside of the magazines. Generally, this correspondence focused on activities …
