Storyville: A Study Of Artifacts, Martha Quinn Fentress

Operating from 1897 to 1917, sixteen blocks from the French Quarter district of New Orleans, Louisiana, several buildings were created to establish a legal red light district known as “Storyville.” The area was named after its creator, Alderman Sidney Story, who enacted the applicable ordinances and helped to establish the district. The creation of Storyville was meant to bring regulation to the sex trade and organized crime. The creation of the sixteen blocks of the district was influenced by a diverse range of experiences, ranging from cheap "cribs," vibrant music halls, saloons, and lavish mansions filled with "top dollar" ladies. …

The purpose of this study is to evaluate the digital collection of the National Gallery of Art’s library with a focus on the diversity of topics, artists, and themes. This study could be a resource to librarians responsible for digital collections and art librarians that want to ensure that their digital collections are seen as diverse. Additionally, this study adds to the body of scholarly literature related to art libraries, digital collections, and diversity, and the research conducted could be used to further analyze other digital collections.

This study conducted a collection analysis of five LGBTQ+ grassroots archives located in North America to exhibit how marginalized communities build and preserve their history on their own. By assessing the different collections for certain metrics and demographics such as the number of materials representing different aspects of the LGBTQ+ community, as well as the types of materials prioritized from t-shirts to posters and books, this study highlights the role these community archives play in the representation of marginalized histories. The de Grummond holdings of Tana Hoban’s work contain items she donated from 1982 to 1991 as well as copies of her books received from other donors. These materials include correspondence; biographical materials; her diaries; and some of her work as a commercial photographer, including photos and advertisements. There are also promotional items for her books and items related to a 1973 educational filmstrip series for which Hoban served on the creative development team (Brown, 2021; (“Tana Hoban Papers,” n.d.). Graphic novels have been recognized by many professionals, researchers, and educators as a major factor in increasing student engagement. The purpose of this research is to analyze a middle school library's statistical data before and after the addition of graphic novels into the library collection. The study also analyzes the growth of scholarly literature related to graphic novels and school libraries. The compilation of this research should provide insight to school librarians, teachers, administrators, and researchers on the value and successes associated with the inclusion of graphic novels in the school library collection.

This study examines the primers collected in the de Grummond Children’s Literature Collection at the University of Southern Mississippi. “The de Grummond Children’s Literature Collection is one of North America’s leading research centers in the field of children’s literature,” with a main focus on American and British literature both historical and contemporary (lib.usm.edu). Specific characteristics of the primers examined in this study include publication year, publisher, and stories and illustrations used in the content. These data provide a general view of the development of the primer both for educative and socio-political purposes over time.

The purpose of this study is to compare the religious non-fiction collection of a public library (Natchitoches Parish Library) with the religious non-fiction collection of a Christian church library (First Baptist Church, Natchitoches) focusing on those books classified in the 200s of the Dewey Decimal Classification system. The two libraries that are the focus of this study are located directly across the street from each other. Exploring 19th Century Gift Books In A Special Collection: A Collection Analysis, Bernadette Birzer

Descriptions of 19th century literature can be limited because items may be out of print, hard to find, or undocumented. McCain Library and Archives at Southern Miss offers a limited selection of 19th century gift books and annuals; these books can be used to evaluate certain distinct characteristics regarding publishers, dates of publication, authors, and binding styles. This study can help to determine prominent genre characteristics for this era, which may be otherwise difficult to determine considering the scarcity of some of the titles and their editions.
