The World Wide Web (WWW) has changed the way that we access information. Digital repositories have become the solution for preserving old materials and the venue to allow open access (OA) to the public. This research paper examined the scholarly library and information science (LIS) literature related to cultural heritage and digital preservation including publication over time, core journals, countries that were the focus of publications, and types of library or cultural repositories that are delineated herein.

The purpose of this study is to document the surviving musical compositions of Henry VIII and Elizabeth I. The repositories in London containing each monarch’s remaining body of musical work were examined and the compositions themselves studied. Research was conducted to give further details about each document and its history within the Tudor monarchs’ lives.

Folklore can be defined as “context, performance, attitude, cultural tastes, and the like” (Toelken, 1996, p.7). With folktale and fairy tales, these stories embody cultural values and morals, aiding in learning a lesson or to keep intact a cultural tradition. Many works of literature serve as models for studies in folklore, offering literary criticism, while allowing ancient traditions and modern traditions to be explored (Toelken, 1996, p. 391). Additionally, most, if not all, written folklore, folktales, and fairy tales were originally passed down verbally, from one generation to the next; these stories are part of oral histories (Toelken, 1996). Mississippi has a place in the history of library science. Although libraries appeared in the state as early as 1818 (Halsell, 1975), training for librarians was not available until 1926 at the State Teacher’s College in Hattiesburg, later renamed The University of Southern Mississippi. Southern Miss awarded its first master’s degree in library science exactly fifty years ago, in 1965.

The Beta Phi Mu International Library & Information Studies Honor Society was founded in 1948 by a group of leading librarians and library educators to recognize and encourage scholastic achievement among library and information studies students. Beta Phi Mu was formally admitted to membership in the Association of College Honor Societies in 1969 and became an affiliate of the American Library Association in 1998.

This session will introduce CORA (Community of Online Research Assignments), a pilot open access educational resource developed for faculty and librarians in higher education. Librarians at Loyola Marymount University (LMU) received a Statewide California Electronic Library Consortium (SCELC) Project Initiatives Fund grant to create an online open access repository of user contributed research and information literacy assignments targeted to SCELC institutions. At San Jose State University, a paper-based archive centering on library and information science history is being processed, organized, and uploaded onto ScholarWorks, the campus institutional repository. Prior to its digitization, the presenters grappled with many questions. What platform should be used to house the archive? What entry points would researchers expect in order to access the collection? What research purposes would this collection satisfy? The presenters will discuss their rationale for their decision-making in transferring 300 binders to an open access, digital format. The search for alternatives to high priced textbooks endures. The librarians at the MGH Institute of Health Professions, with the help of an IMLS Sparks! Ignition grant, decided to jump into the fray by creating the Open Access Course Reserves. It is a publicly available, curated repository that provides ready-made reading lists of free, copyright compliant (open access when possible), educational materials. The materials are selected to match typical syllabi and textbook contents and organized by discipline and course. This presentation was given at the 2015 USETDA (United States Electronic Theses and Dissertations Association) conference in Austin, Texas explores the history of Digital Collections Center at Florida International University and where and how it functions in the process of publishing, archiving, and promoting the university's electronic theses and dissertations. Additionally, the functionality of Digital Commons is discussed along with the use of Adobe Acrobat for creating archival quality PDFs. The final section discusses promotion techniques used via social media for increased discoverability of ETDs.

When I started as an IR manager at Nova Southeastern University (September 2014), the IR had been live for 6 months and one of the in process pilot projects was a journal with 219 back issues dating to 1990. The journal was still on the demonstration site when I started. This presentation was given at the Panhandle Library Access Network's (PLAN) Innovation Conference: Digitization- Preserving the Past for the Future Conference on August 14th, 2015. The presentation uses a specific collection of directories as a case study of the complications librarians and archivists face in digitizing older materials that may also be quite large, such as a directory. Prime OCR and Abbyy Fine Reader are discussed and their pros and cons covered. Troubleshooting and editing with Adobe Photoshop is also discussed.

Libraries have guidelines and standards that hold them accountable to be effective institutions (Husid, 2010). The American Library Association’s (ALA) “Library Bill of Rights” sets six basic standards for all libraries to follow. Among other things, these standards encourage libraries to resist forms of censorship, grant access to all types of materials, and resist biases (ALA, 2007). However, as libraries have evolved, so have many of these guidelines and standards with respect to technology specifically. Cultural attacks, especially attacks on books, have been common place during conflict throughout history (Stubbings, 1993). Libraries in particular have been targeted since books and libraries are symbols of cultures (Valencia, 2002). Nazi Germany was not an exception to attacks on culture before and during World War II (Figure 1). A total war had begun under the Nazis which meant that no area of society was exempt from attack (Valencia, 2002).
