The presenters all handle social media for their libraries, but in very different settings: a large academic library at a public-private research institution, a medium-sized academic library at a private university, and a medium-sized public library in a town that revolves around a university. The workshop will provide some general discussion about how the different technology environments elicit different responses from various user groups and, using Twitter as a microcosm, the similarities and differences between approaches will be discussed. The legalities concerning social media policies and the magic of paying attention to target audiences will also be explored.

Libraries are offering more services through social media Web sites like Twitter and Facebook, and this presence online is encouraging more conversation between libraries and patrons, including collection development requests. A review of popular Twitter and Facebook library profiles reveals the most successful accounts to be those where the library actively engages its users online. Through these media, libraries can have direct, immediate conversations with patrons that result in patron-initiated material requests.

Experimentation and exploration are hallmarks of innovative libraries, but as experiments become on-going projects and investigations become long-term commitments, it is important to gain perspective on how the roles of librarians, archivists, and information professionals are changing. Geographically referenced data is becoming a robust source of information because the use of place-based relevance searching is being employed as a popular form of information access and dispersal. To address this trend, the researcher conducted a study on the usability of the USA National Phenology Network (http://www.usanpn.org/), engaging 6 volunteer participants structured usability test of the USANPN mapping application.
