DigitalCommons@UNO (https://digitalcommons.unomaha.edu/) is an Institutional Repository (IR) and an initiative implemented by the University of Nebraska at Omaha (UNO) Libraries to support our UNO scholars through providing a Green Open Access solution. DigitalCommons@UNO disseminates a wide variety of scholarship including faculty papers, electronic theses and dissertations (ETDs), conferences and journals. Since its launch in 2014, the UNO Libraries have been implementing and managing DigitalCommons@UNO through outreach to the UNO community in an effort to collect scholarly works into the IR.

This presentation will discuss the strengths and weaknesses of the University of Nebraska at Omaha Open Access Fund through analysis of the disciplinary diversity of applicants, eligibility guidelines, funding limit and the benefits of publishing Open Access. Furthermore, it will seek to discover ways to increase participation in the Open Access Fund and by extension, the institutional repository, through comparison with other universities’ OA funds.

We will share our success and experience of working with two repositories with a small staff at two small universities in rural Kansas. The digital repository serves as a Green Open Access solution to globally share scholarship produced by the university community. Both Pittsburg State University (PSU) and Fort Hays State University (FHSU) previously used CONTENTdm (CDM) as their primary digital repository. In 2015, both PSU and FHSU purchased and launched Bepress Digital Commons (DC), a more robust repository. Considering global discoverability, unlimited storage, efficient technical support, and the ability to share a wide range of file formats in one interface, Digital Commons by Bepress is the most reliable for small institutions.

Wyoming Scholar’s Repository (WySR), is an initiative by the University of Wyoming Libraries to support our scholars and provide a Green Open Access solution. WySR (http://repository.uwyo.edu/) disseminates a wide variety of scholarship, including faculty papers, student scholarship, conference proceedings, and journals. The Digital Collections office and the Scholarly Communication Librarian have been implementing and managing WySR by searching our purchased electronic materials, relying on the SHERPA/RoMEO database of publisher policies, and communicating with faculty to seek permissions to bring their scholarly publications into the repository. This presentation will discuss the benefits and challenges associated with Institutional Repository (IR) initiatives and development, while sharing our experiences from WySR (Wyoming Scholar’s Repository). Our institutional repository, WySR, will be used as a case study to illustrate particular difficulties in obtaining author versions of publications; the quality of open access research; and technical limitations.
