This paper reviews the requirements for buildings that store inactive and archival records. It then reviews the requirements for green buildings that meet LEED standards. Lastly, it discusses whether it is possible to build greener buildings for archival and records storage facilities.

Academic institutions, even small colleges and universities, acknowledge the importance of archives in order to preserve and promote their institutional heritage. For the past half-century, an increasing number of institutions are establishing and supporting archives. Two over-arching questions soon arise: first, how is an academic institution, especially one with limited funding and staffing, to achieve success with their archives? This presentation discusses a proposal to improve upon current advocacy efforts being made at the St. John's Kathryn and Shelby Cullom Davis Library located on its Manhattan campus (formerly the New York College of Insurance Library). Proposed strategies include: creation of an archival independent study course, applying for grant monies; developing public/ private partnerships with industry; and employing open source cataloging software such as the Archivist's Toolkit.

The Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) of Canada is currently conducting hearings across Canada, and its records will need to be archived. The critical importance of preserving and providing access to such an archive will be discussed in this paper. Best practices for this archive will be exemplified by looking at the experiences of archivists working with truth commissions and international criminal justice tribunals in Africa. Additionally, Australian recommendations concerning aboriginal access to government records will be reviewed. While the ramifications of minimal standards processing for practice are well-documented, the theoretical questions which Greene and Meissner's 2005 article "More Product, Less Process" raises are not.
