A New Model For Evaluating The Online Tutorial: Does Your Tutorial Reflect Your Mission?, Paulette Kerr, Jana Valejs

LOEX Conference Proceedings 2009

The online tutorial has emerged as a ubiquitous representation of information literacy instruction and often is the visible face of these programs. Academic libraries currently boast an expanding array of tutorials which are presented as effective alternatives and supplements to face-to-face instruction. A growing body of literature exists about the design and evaluation of the online tutorial (Atwater-Singer & Metcalf, 2006; Dewald, 1999; Hrycaj, 2005; Tronstad, Phillips, Garcia, & Harlow, 2009). Typically, evaluations focus on the quality of the tutorial or its effect on student learning. Quality questions ask whether it is engaging, easy to navigate, and up-to-date. Effectiveness questions …

Video Instruction Made To Order: Collaboration Between Librarians And Faculty To Improve Student Theses, Claudia J. Dold

Academic Services Faculty and Staff Publications

This paper traces the collaboration between the librarians in my special library and two academic departments in my university. Our initial discussions led to a deeper understanding of our mutual goals: helping students acquire the research and writing skills they would need to write their master's theses, and their continued engagement in scholarship as future professionals, as consumers, and as producers of new knowledge in their field. The librarians offered a unique solution: a series of fifteen videos that showed, among other topics, how to search the academic databases across disciplines, how to target research and organize the results, and …

Throw Out Those Paper Bookplates! The Digital Bookplate Program At The University Of Western Ontario, Cheryl Martin, Lisa Rae Philpott Aug 2011

Throw Out Those Paper Bookplates! The Digital Bookplate Program At The University Of Western Ontario, Cheryl Martin, Lisa Rae Philpott

Lisa Rae Philpott

Western Libraries (The University of Western Ontario) has recently developed a digital bookplate program. We create a digital bookplate in Fireworks (a graphics design program) using a set of standard templates. Then we link a web page with information about the bookplate to a search, which displays all of the material purchased for that donation in the catalogue. The donor is provided with the web-link and can view the bookplate and the catalogue records for the material that was purchased or donated.

Receptivity To Library Involvement In Scientific Data Curation: A Case Study At The University Of Colorado Boulder, Kathryn Lage, Barbara Losoff, Jack M. Maness Jan 2011

Receptivity To Library Involvement In Scientific Data Curation: A Case Study At The University Of Colorado Boulder, Kathryn Lage, Barbara Losoff, Jack M. Maness

University Libraries: Faculty Scholarship

Increasingly libraries are expected to play a role in scientific data curation initiatives, i.e., "the management and preservation of digital data over the long-term." This case study offers a novel approach for identifying researchers who are receptive toward library involvement in data curation. The authors interviewed researchers at the University of Colorado Boulder and, after analysis, created eight design "personas." Each persona represents an aggregation of researcher attributes and can be used to target strategic relationships for nascent or emerging data management initiatives. These personas are applicable to any academic library seeking to provide data curation support.

Latino Students’ Perceptions Of The Academic Library, Dallas Long Jan 2011

Latino Students’ Perceptions Of The Academic Library, Dallas Long

Faculty and Staff Publications – Milner Library

Library use is strongly linked with student persistence in higher education, and Latino students have lower rates of academic library use and proficiency than other racial/ethnic groups of students. This study explores Latino undergraduate students’ perceptions of the academic library and library staff and identifies the conditions which impede or facilitate the students’ use of the library. Using a multiple case study design, this study describes the experiences and perceptions of undergraduate students who identify as Latino and attend a four-year public research-intensive university in the Midwest. The findings suggest that Latino students use the library through the influence of …
