This presentation was part of the OMB Public Listening Sessions on Federal Race and Ethnicity Standards Revision. The presentation addressed the use of racial and ethnic categories and their impact on medical subject headings managed by the National Library of Medicine.

The presentation was on behalf of the Medical Library Association (MLA) comprising more than 400 institutions and 2,500 professional health sciences and medical librarians and a joint collaboration between the Latinx Caucus and the Social Justice and Health Disparities Caucus. Online tutorials are a frequently utilized method for academic libraries to meet student and instructor needs and adapt to the growing digital learning environment. There is little guidance for creating holistically inclusive tutorials and fewer standards for avoiding deficit thinking, which decenters students’ prior knowledge and experiences and perpetuates harmful assumptions. In this session, presenters will share early findings from a mixed-methods content analysis of tutorial offerings from R1 academic libraries. Attendees will discuss what makes a tutorial inclusive, identify criteria for creating inclusive tutorials, and reflect on how they have or have not enacted these values for tutorial design. …

This workshop introduces the cataloging of streaming media using RDA standards and the MARC21 format. The workshop focuses on challenges and different aspects of streaming video and audio, filmed and recorded originally in languages spoken in the Middle East. It is recommended that attendees have a basic knowledge of cataloging using the MARC21 format.

Georgia Southern makes available a variety of equipment for student check out including a fleet of approximately 200 laptops, high-end digital cameras, tripods and lighting kits, video recording equipment, high-end microphones, and more. Equipment checkout is popular with students with equipment cycling in and out. Equipment also presents unique cataloging challenges. MARC was designed for books, and providing a good search for pulling statistics for non-traditional items can be a challenge. Online tutorials have become a regular and important part of library instruction. During the pandemic there was an increase in the number of online tutorials created by libraries, as librarians shifted their approach to working with students. Having to adapt to the increasing changes in digital pedagogy left some librarians at a disadvantage. While some institutions had the resources to adapt quickly, other institutions did not. In order to understand the limitations of tutorial creation, one must understand the “pain points” or the difficulties some institutions and individuals go through in creating tutorials.

This presentation provides an overview of "Crafting Contemporary Indigenous Studies Collections in the Age of Algorithms: A Case Study," a chapter that appeared in the 2021 ACRL text, Ethnic Studies in Academic and Research Libraries. Both the chapter and presentation slides describe a collection enhancement project focused on Indigenous Studies and, further, offers recommendations for others conducting similar work.
