3d: Dois, Data Files, And Digital Commons, Kelley F. Rowan, Rebecca J. Bakker

Works of the FIU Libraries

This presentation looks at the emerging trends of implementing Digital Object Identifiers (DOIs) and the storage, preservation, and accessibility of related data files for both ETDs and retrospective theses and dissertations (RTDs). The first half of this presentation will explore implementation models for DOIs, including additional metadata work that may become apparent, such as standardizing institutional degrees, as well as the successful administration of a DOI workflow between the graduate school and the library. Participants will learn how DOIs work and their benefit of increased cite-ability and discoverability. Attendees will also learn how to develop a successful workflow in conjunction …

Authority Control In Digital Commons: Why Bother?, Laura Edwards Jun 2018

Authority Control In Digital Commons: Why Bother?, Laura Edwards

EKU Faculty and Staff Scholarship

Authority control provided by Digital Commons is basic. Other than author names, Digital Commons does not provide much in the way of authority control for other fields, such as faculty advisor/mentor names or department names. Standardizing name fields has several benefits, not least of which is the increased precision of reports that institutions can create to highlight the impact of faculty mentorship activities as well as the scholarship output of departmental entities on campus. Institutions that want to ensure the consistency of names across submissions to their Digital Commons repository, especially for self-submitted submissions, must develop their own methods for …

Pipe Dreams: Harvesting Local Collections Into Primo Using Oai-Pmh, Geraldine Rinna, Marianne Swierenga, Emily Gross

University Libraries Faculty & Staff Presentations

Achieve seamless discovery of materials by aggregating disparate data sources into a single discovery interface through the creation of pipes. We will present our process of selecting, curating, configuring, and harvesting from our institutional repository, digital collections, subject guides, and archival finding aids, in order to provide a streamlined user experience and increased discovery. This presentation will share our workflows, including mapping to Dublin Core, configuring the pipes, testing new resources in the Primo Sandbox, and then deploying in our Production instance.

Considerations And Challenges For Describing Historical Research Data: A Case Study, Teressa M. Keenan, Wendy Walker Mar 2018

Considerations And Challenges For Describing Historical Research Data: A Case Study, Teressa M. Keenan, Wendy Walker

Mansfield Library Faculty Publications

This case study describes the several challenges faced by Library personnel at the University of Montana as they iteratively made an historical dataset available in the institutional repository in a way that attempted to optimize its discoverability, accessibility, searchability, and usability to current and future researchers. The authors will examine the development of this multi-media dataset collection in order to discuss the specific challenges and opportunities around: describing and making available an historical dataset, repository structures, metadata specifications, and accessibility requirements.
