Open Source Integrated Library Systems In Public Libraries, Tony Brooke
Open Source Integrated Library Systems In Public Libraries, Tony Brooke
School of Information Student Research Journal
One of the most fundamental decisions a library makes is choosing an integrated library system, or ILS. A public library can remove unwanted outside influence and save money by switching their ILS to free and open source software, or FOSS. This article is an examination of the progress made by FOSS ILSs to become not only contenders against proprietary systems, but also an appropriate choice for financial, functional, and philosophical reasons. Included is a timeline of published evaluations, the milestone of 14% adoption, a summary of the current landscape, and example implementation cases. A functional analysis shows why a public …

Learn how a small college library launched an institutional repository (IR) without dedicated staff or IT support. Thanks to hosted solutions and our global learning community, open access repositories are now within reach of smaller institutions, and they bring many benefits to the libraries that manage them. Weigh the benefits of library publishing with the new, lower cost of participating, and decide if an IR is right for your library.

Why Some Students Continue To Value Individual, Face-To-Face Research Consultations In A Technology-Rich World, Trina J. Magi, Patricia E. Mardeusz
University Libraries Faculty and Staff Publications
For decades, academic librarians have provided individual research consultations for students. There is little information, however, about why students schedule consultations, the kinds of assistance students feel are provided by librarians during consultations, and what students find valuable about face-to-face consultations, even with the availability of online research help. This exploratory, qualitative study of individual research consultations at the University of Vermont gathered students’ views on these questions. The findings will help librarians better understand how individual consultations serve students and what role consultations should play in the mix of reference services offered.

Censorship And The Challenges Of Library Services Delivery In Nigeria, Japheth A. Yaya Mr
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
Abstract
This paper discusses censorship and the challenges of Library services delivery in Nigeria. Librarians, through their professional associations, have long been committed to the social justice principle of free access to information. External censorship challenges to library collections threaten this principle overtly. However, censorship can also occur in libraries in various covert and often unconscious ways. This paper also raises concerns about current librarian practices and library censorship processes which can effectively censor library collections from within. In managing the library and its services, the librarian should promote inclusion and should not discriminate against any library user regardless of …

Over the past two years, Western Libraries has created numerous online, video tutorials with the intent of helping students grasp various information literacy concepts. These video tutorial are mounted on Western’s YouTube channel, and on Western Libraries’ website. Tutorial topics were determined by identifying recurring Information Literacy issues, by examining existing library instruction material, and by surveying faculty. The tutorials utilize various styles. While many tutorials teach concepts, some teach specific library tools. Our poster includes a summary report of assessment results.
