Refreshing Information Literacy: Learning From Recent British Information Literacy Models, Justine Martin

Communications in Information Literacy

Models play an important role in helping practitioners implement and promote information literacy. Over time models can lose relevance with the advances in technology, society, and learning theory. Practitioners and scholars often call for adaptations or transformations of these frameworks to articulate the learning needs in information literacy development. This study analyzes four recently published models from the United Kingdom. The initial findings were presented in a report for an ACRL taskforce reviewing the Information Literacy Competency Standards for Higher Education. This article presents complementary, yet distinct findings from the same dataset that focus on reoccurring themes for information literacy …

These RLOs have helped to facilitate student transition from second to third level, advance IL and enrich the student learning experience. The purpose of this paper is to outline the development of these RLOs and how the resources have been shared, reused and repurposed to enhance IL progression. A review of recent literature explores some of the key issues around the creation of digital learning …

Using A Media Technology Showcase To Bridge The Gap Between K-12 & Higher Education: Creating A Professional Development Workshop., Sonya Shepherd

Sonya S. Gaither

Why should students spend time navigating to find the library tools needed to search? Why not provide direct links to library resources so more time is spent finding, evaluating, and synthesizing information? These were questions asked by some academic librarians trying to help students locate resources for assignments. As a result, these academic librarians created online tutorials for using persistent links to library resources. Teaching faculty learned how to use the links in web pages and WebCT Vista. These tutorials were also shared at conferences. Attendees encouraged the presenters to develop a hands-on workshop. Attendees also suggested the workshop as a …

Getting In Bed With Our Customers: How Did We Embed Our Services To Push The Library Mission At Vaal University Of Technology, Ntombizodwa G. Thomas

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

Emerging trends in technology have changed the academic libraries’ landscape and services. These changes will forever impact and influence how libraries conduct their businesses to satisfy the most important people in their lives; that is; the customers we serve, especially in academic libraries.

In the 21st century waiting for customers to come to the libraries to is no longer working and is also no longer relevant. Getting out of our comfort zones, getting close to our clients, invading their space when they least expect and getting in bed with those customers to satisfy their information needs is now a …

Blended Learning In Information Literacy Education. How To Make The Resources Stretch?, Marja Talikka, Iris Tahvanainen, Hanna Varri

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

Many small university libraries struggle with lack of resources for teaching information literacy (IL) skills to the students. There is not enough time or personnel to reach all the students in need of IL education. On the other hand, the faculties expect students to use high quality academic information sources while writing their papers. However, the teachers have neither time nor knowledge to instruct their students in information retrieval.

The paper describes one solution model to the problem. In the Lappeenranta University of Technology the library personnel have created an IL education package which requires few resources but works well …

An Exploratory Framework For A Study On Designing A Research Focused Advanced Information Literacy Program For Engineering Postgraduates, Karien Du Bruyn Apr 2013

An Exploratory Framework For A Study On Designing A Research Focused Advanced Information Literacy Program For Engineering Postgraduates, Karien Du Bruyn

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

Efforts to improve information literacy levels in academic institutions are often focused on undergraduate students, and mostly address the improvement of information retrieval skills. This practice is also evident in information literacy programs offered for postgraduate researchers, if offered at all. Although there have been radical transformations in scholarly communication and practice in recent years, there is still an assumption among many that researchers on postgraduate level are sufficiently information literate to deal with the new challenges. A gradual awareness of the unique needs of postgraduate researchers in a dynamic and demanding academic environment is, however, developing. Literature in this …
