In this era of knowledge economy, a time where it is difficult to ignore any type of knowledge system, it is incumbent on librarians and libraries to reduce the gap between the use of indigenous knowledge owned by local people and the western scientific knowledge. The library for users is a democracy, and there is no reason it should enhance apartheid among knowledge systems and/or resources. Academic libraries not only need to focus on instructing students about library resources but also need to actively reach out to them. One way to accomplish this is to integrate gaming into library programming and instruction. The staff of the Lawrence University Seeley G. Mudd Library has been successfully incorporating games into library outreach programming. This article explores the various ways academic libraries have been integrating games into instruction and programming and provides advice and anecdotal evidence from programming experiences at the Seeley G. Mudd Library.

Library use is strongly linked with student persistence in higher education, and Latino students have lower rates of academic library use and proficiency than other racial/ethnic groups of students. This study explores Latino undergraduate students’ perceptions of the academic library and library staff and identifies the conditions which impede or facilitate the students’ use of the library. Using a multiple case study design, this study describes the experiences and perceptions of undergraduate students who identify as Latino and attend a four-year public research-intensive university in the Midwest. Research questions: What are the current conceptualizations of health literacy, and what strategies are Canadian health librarians in public, academic, and hospital libraries enacting to put health literacy promotion into practice? Data sources: Serving as the basis of this scoping review, library and information science, health sciences, and interdisciplinary databases were searched using key terms relating to health literacy promotion as it relates to services, programming, or resources used in a variety of library settings. The history of academic library involvement in service learning is varied. This paper provides an overview of service learning and the literature on academic libraries’ participation in service learning activities. A vision of service learning participation is described, as well as the implementation of service learning activities in two library science courses. Strategies for future library contributions to service learning are presented to encourage more widespread involvement across the profession.

Doing more with less is a challenge facing all libraries. Staff sizes are trending down while technical services work load remains the same or is increasing; at the same time, there are new and emerging areas of focus for libraries. Grand Valley State University Libraries have made a commitment to exploring any opportunity to outsource or streamline workflows. Presenters will discuss specific examples that utilize outsourcing opportunities as well as batch processing to keep up with the work demand and benefit the library.
