Is There Value In Value-Added Cataloging?, Lauren Marshall, Mina Chercourt

Mina Chercourt

We discuss a project they conducted to identify whether adding table of contents and analytics to certain materials in the collection would increase circulation. They selected monographic series in the Q classification that were titled separately and five or six large series in the Ps for analyzing. The work resulted in significant increases in circulation of the materials ( anywhere from 59% to 186%). The work was labor intensive, but the increased use of the materials made it certainly worthwhile.

Cooperative Cataloging In Academic Libraries: From Mesopotamia To Metadata, Elizabeth A. Salt

Library Faculty & Staff Scholarship

This presentation provides a short historical survey of the development of library cataloging in the Western world and includes information on the gradual growth of cooperation among libraries in terms of using shared standardized cataloging rules and classification systems. Contemporary cooperation in cataloging is also covered focusing on cataloging facilitated by OCLC (Online Computer Library Center), OhioLINK, and the OPAL (Ohio Private Academic Libraries) Consortium. Metadata Dictionary Database: A Proposed Tool For Academic Library Metadata Management, Silvia B. Southwick, Cory Lampert

Library Faculty Presentations

Efficient management of metadata is critical for developing quality, sharable metadata. A variety of metadata challenges arise from metadata designed in a project-specific context versus taking a comprehensive metadata management approach applied across multiple digital collections in academic libraries.

Building A Global Open Network Of Discovery: Improving Subject Browsing With Linked Authority Data, John Mark Ockerbloom

John Mark Ockerbloom

This is a static version of the visuals of a presentation I gave to the ALA Subject on linked open subject authority data. I described how linked data from the Library of Congress (http://id.loc.gov/) can be used to improve subject cataloging and browsing. I describe how the data is structured (including a brief overview of RDF and SKOS), and explain how I have used it to improve The Online Books Page (http://onlinebooks.library.upenn.edu/) and the Penn Libraries' catalog. I also show how I augmented and enhanced the authority data from LC, and discuss how widespread use of linked bibliographic and authority …

Making E-‐Serials Holdings Data Transferable: Applying The Kbart Recommended Practice, Jason S. Price, Lori Duggan

Library Staff Publications and Research

The Knowledge Bases and Related Tools (KBART) project is an initiative of the National Information Standards Organization (NISO) and UKSG which has established a set of best practices for the exchange of electronic resource holdings metadata between content providers and knowledgebase developers. The benefits of KBART are that it relieves information professionals from the time consuming process of actively reconciling electronic journal title lists, and addresses the many inadequacies which are common in title holdings lists. As of June 1, 2010, KBART has been endorsed by American Institute of Physics, Ex Libris, Serials Solutions and OCLC. Information professionals can facilitate …

Facilitating Greater Access To Etds Through Contentdm, Rachel Howard, Tyler Goldberg

Rachel I. Howard

Bound theses and dissertations (BTDs) have increasingly been supplemented or replaced by electronic theses and dissertations (ETDs). Since 2002, the University of Louisville Libraries have been building a collection of born-digital and digitized ETDs in order to provide free worldwide access to these titles, and to enable graduate
students to include digital media in their works. In 2009 the Libraries migrated the ETD collection from a homegrown database to CONTENTdm, in order to allow for full-text searching and simultaneous searching of other electronic collections. This article will discuss the cataloging workflows for the different phases of the project, including the …
