Bright Idea: Connecting To Users With Facebook, Cliff Landis

The author relates his decision to establish an Ask a Librarian social networking group for students at Valdosta State University in Georgia. One of the appeals of social networking Web sites to users is the variety of services in one interface. He discovered that many students are using the Facebook site while researching. He recommends the creation of individual accounts because Facebook discourages institute-wide accounts.

This study explored the relationship between how students are taught to write in first-year English composition classes and what they are expected to read as part of the general education requirements at a publically-funded large university in the southeast (PLUS), and then to determine whether a gap exists. If a gap is found to exist between the preparation of students and their ability to read material that has been assigned by the teaching faculty, these students are less likely to be considered information literate by any rubric.

Developing A Library Value Indicator For A Disciplinary Population, Jeanne M. Brown

Three different ways of documenting library value were presented to fourth year landscape architecture students in the UNLV School of Architecture: a contingent valuation survey, a library calculator, and a survey to rate importance and impact of library services and features. Students used the three approaches, then discussed their experiences with the author. Their input suggested improvements in the instruments and provided feedback on possible positive and negative consequences of inviting this kind of valuing. Working with a focused collection and population provided a relatively safe environment to explore concerns about negative consequences.

Over the last year, the K-State at Salina Library has created and renovated a project utilizing contemporary music as a way to connect with students and provide research topics in an Expository Writing course. In 2003, the song “Where Is the Love?” by international music sensation The Black-Eyed Peas, swept the tops of billboard charts. With a hip-hop vibe and boundary-crossing critique of war, terrorism, discrimination, and hate crimes, the song’s themes moved fans of all ages, races, and backgrounds. This quantitative study investigated student and faculty attitudes toward use of Digital Media Technology (DMT) at the University of Denver. The purpose was to understand how and why students and faculty used DMT on campus. Uses and gratifications theory (Katz, Blumler, & Gurevitch, 1974) was used as the theoretical model to interpret and understand Millennial college students' DMT use, Langer and Knefelcamp's (2008) College student technology arc was used as a conceptual model.
