Business Community Outreach: Exploration Of A New Service Role In An Academic Environment, Patrick Griffis, Sidney Lowe
Library Faculty Publications
A recent special issue of the Journal of Business & Finance Librarianship focusing on business librarianship and entrepreneurship includes many case studies detailing entrepreneurship outreach initiatives from academic libraries. The introductory article, "Entrepreneurship Outreach: A New Role for the Academic Business Librarian" by Karen MacDonald, outlines entrepreneurial outreach initiatives in the issue, stating that they “describe three very different approaches libraries have taken to align themselves with a key mission of the university – economic development” (MacDonald, 2010, p. 159). This chapter elaborates on this previous work in describing the exploration of a new role in business community outreach as …

Technology, Teaching And Faculty : Collaborations That Work, Valla Mclean, Carolee Pollock
LOEX Conference Proceedings 2009
In an effort to address both the drawbacks of the one-shot library session and student apathy towards the library, a reference librarian and humanities professor developed a multi-tiered plan to enhance the information literacy learning experience of students. Through just-in-time instruction taught in the students’ classroom through a library resources module in Blackboard embedded in a humanities course this unique collaborative effort transcended space and academic departments. Hear about the benefits and challenges of teaching library skills through point-of-need instruction and innovative technologies such as Blackboard and Camtasia. Walk away with strategies for blended learning and creating collaborative environments.

Need Exceeds Space: A Serials Withdrawal Project At The University Of Rhode Island University Libraries, Brian T. Gallagher, Andrée J. Rathemacher
Public Services Faculty Publications
In 2009, the University of Rhode Island’s main library, the Robert L. Carothers Library and Learning Commons in Kingston, initiated a pilot serials withdrawal project when the need for space for new services exceeded the space available in the library. A joint venture between Acquisitions and Access Services, the successful pilot led to a subsequent withdrawal project in summer 2010 to free additional space in the library. The print journals targeted for withdrawal were ones to which the library had online access through licensed journal archives. Considerations on what to withdraw, the process of identifying titles for withdrawal, and the …

Librarian Perceptions And Information Literacy Instruction Models, Erin Davis, Kacy Lundstrom, Pamela N. Martin
Library Faculty & Staff Publications
Purpose – This paper aims to explore both instruction librarians' attitudes on teaching and how they identify themselves as teachers. Particular attention is to be paid to teaching librarians' views on the effectiveness of two types of instruction models: for-credit courses and course-integrated library instruction.
Design/methodology/approach – To investigate librarians' attitudes towards these two models, a survey was constructed targeting librarians who teach information literacy (IL).
Findings – The results indicate that there is an important relationship between the IL instruction model employed and feelings towards campus politics, perceived effectiveness of IL models, and librarians' self-identification as teachers.

Keeping Track Of Objects And Metadata At Unlv: From Material Selection Through Metadata Quality Control, Silvia B. Southwick, Jane Skoric
Library Faculty Presentations
Often times a large amount of time is spent in organizing materials and tracking workflow in digital collection projects. Time is a precious resource in most projects since they are constrained by a rigid schedule. This problem is exacerbated in collaborative environments where different people collaborate in various stages of the project. Silvia Southwick and Jane Skoric with the University of Nevada, Las Vegas will present effective and efficient simple tools to manage digital objects and metadata throughout the life cycle of a digital collection project. Using actual work processes, we will describe and demonstrate the tracking of physical and …

Taking Collective Action: Collaborative Strategies For Growing Your Institution's Repository, Jon Mcglone
Taking Collective Action: Collaborative Strategies For Growing Your Institution's Repository, Jon Mcglone
Library Scholarly Publications
For over a decade library literature has championed the benefits of open access institutional repositories. Many academic librarians and library administrators agree upon the idea of an open access institutional repository and have invested in running a repository. The open access movement has begun to change the landscape of research and scholarly publishing through mandates and shifting publisher policies. Despite these advances, repository content growth has been slow in North America.
Wayne State University’s repository—Digital Commons—has existed since 2005 but experienced similarly slow growth. In late 2008, Wayne State addressed this issue with the creation of an actionable roadmap that …
Looking Back, Moving Forward In The Digital Age: A Review Of The Collection Management And Development Literature, 2004–8, Lorre Smith, Daryl R. Bullis
Looking Back, Moving Forward In The Digital Age: A Review Of The Collection Management And Development Literature, 2004–8, Lorre Smith, Daryl R. Bullis
University Libraries Faculty Scholarship
The collection and management of digital resources dominated collection development and management literature produced during 2004–8. Themes covered the changing nature of local collections, redefining collection management responsibilities and practices, cooperation and collaboration, and collection assessment and evaluation. The literature reflected the struggle to manage a vast array of resources while library budgets stagnated. While publishers continued to offer more bundles of electronic publications, librarians responded with strategies to collaborate and negotiate for feasible pricing structures. A culture of continuous assessment was a major topic. During this review period, access to and ownership of digital resources reemerged as a pervasive …
The Third Place: The Library As Collaborative And Community Space In A Time Of Fiscal Restraint, Susan Montgomery, Jonathan Miller
The Third Place: The Library As Collaborative And Community Space In A Time Of Fiscal Restraint, Susan Montgomery, Jonathan Miller
Faculty Publications
In a period of fiscal constraint, when assumptions about the library as place are being challenged, administrators question the contribution of every expense to student success. Libraries have been successful in migrating resources and services to a digital environment accessible beyond the library. What is the role of the library as place when users do not need to visit the building to utilize library services and resources? We argue that the college library building’s core role is as a space for collaborative learning and community interaction which cannot be jettisoned in the new normal.

Making Decisions: Using Electronic Data Collection To Re-Envision Reference Services At The Usf Tampa Libraries, Lily Todorinova, Barbara Lewis, Andy Huse, Matt Torrence
Academic Services Faculty and Staff Publications
Declining reference statistics, diminishing human resources, and the desire to be more proactive and embedded in academic depart- ments, prompted the University of South Florida Library to create a taskforce for re-envisioning reference services. The taskforce was charged with examining the staffing patterns at the desk and developing recommendations to give librarians greater flexibility and to better respond to the information-seeking needs of users. These recommendations were based on statistics of desk usage, collected with the newly adapted online tool Desk Tracker, and structured interviews with library administrators. The taskforce was interested in how these stakeholders use quantitative data in …

Roadmap To Success: Scholarly Communications At Wayne State University, Suzan A. Alteri, Jonathan Mcglone
Library Scholarly Publications
Despite the role of libraries in the open access movement, many librarians still need education on differing viewpoints, the vocabulary, and initiatives surrounding the movement. Recently, Wayne State University Librarians formed a Scholarly Communications team to introduce open access and scholarly communication reform. This team took a leadership role in educating liaison librarians, providing campus-wide workshops on research dissemination, and creating special open access week programming. How this was accomplished, the positive outcomes and future opportunities generated by these collective efforts will be discussed.

Surviving To Thriving: Advancing The Institutional Mission, Brinley Franklin
Published Works
Academic research libraries can employ several approaches to advance the institutional mission. First, libraries can shift from goals focused on collections and traditional library services and instead align with their campus academic plan and an emphasis on supporting the institution’s strategic initiatives. A second approach is for libraries to modify their organizational structures from being function-based on the tasks that traditional libraries performed (e.g., public services, technical services, collection development) and move instead toward organizational units that directly support their university’s missions (e.g., undergraduate education; graduate and professional education; research, scholarship, and creative activity; and public engagement). The key is …

The Information And Learning Commons: Some Reflections, Elizabeth K. Heitsch, Robert P. Holley
The Information And Learning Commons: Some Reflections, Elizabeth K. Heitsch, Robert P. Holley
School of Information Sciences Faculty Research Publications
The Information and Learning Commons modes of library organization has become more prevalent over the past few decades and allows academic libraries to provide wider-ranging and more cohesive services to their constituents. Several issues, including relying upon a single, mythical "Patron" in planning for services; poor organization; a lack of cohesion and centralized leadership; and the "digital divide" may hinder the effectiveness of the Commons and negatively impact both patrons and staff. If these problems can be surmounted, this model shows great promise for both current and future application in academic libraries.

Differently Able: A Review Of Academic Library Websites For People With Disabilities, Mary Cassner, Charlene Maxey-Harris, Toni Anaya
UNL Libraries: Faculty Publications
This research is based on the Library Services for People with Disabilities Policy, which was approved by the American Library Association in 2001. The policy identified focus areas for libraries including library services, facilities, collections, and assistive technology. Library websites frequently convey this information to users. Our study examined and compared academic library websites for the differently able. What services do academic libraries offer to the differently able? Is there a basic level of services that libraries identify or should offer? Are websites for people with disabilities easily located from the library’s home page?
