Video Instruction Made To Order: Collaboration Between Librarians And Faculty To Improve Student Theses, Claudia J. Dold
Video Instruction Made To Order: Collaboration Between Librarians And Faculty To Improve Student Theses, Claudia J. Dold
Academic Services Faculty and Staff Publications
This paper traces the collaboration between the librarians in my special library and two academic departments in my university. Our initial discussions led to a deeper understanding of our mutual goals: helping students acquire the research and writing skills they would need to write their master's theses, and their continued engagement in scholarship as future professionals, as consumers, and as producers of new knowledge in their field. The librarians offered a unique solution: a series of fifteen videos that showed, among other topics, how to search the academic databases across disciplines, how to target research and organize the results, and …

Andy Huse, Barbara Lewis, Lily Todorinova, and Matt Torrence participated in a panel presentation for RUSA MARS Hot Topics. Their presentation titled "Informed Desk Staffing Through Quantified Reference Statistics” discussed the data collection, data analysis, and decision-making aspects of the Re-envisioning Reference project at the USF Libraries. This project examined the implementation and effectiveness of online data collection tools and the use of their data to inform managerial decisions as to scheduling of desk hours and staffing levels. Making Decisions: Using Electronic Data Collection To Re-Envision Reference Services At The Usf Tampa Libraries, Lily Todorinova, Barbara Lewis, Andy Huse, Matt Torrence
Academic Services Faculty and Staff Publications
Declining reference statistics, diminishing human resources, and the desire to be more proactive and embedded in academic depart- ments, prompted the University of South Florida Library to create a taskforce for re-envisioning reference services. The taskforce was charged with examining the staffing patterns at the desk and developing recommendations to give librarians greater flexibility and to better respond to the information-seeking needs of users. These recommendations were based on statistics of desk usage, collected with the newly adapted online tool Desk Tracker, and structured interviews with library administrators. The taskforce was interested in how these stakeholders use quantitative data in …

Coping With Hobgoblins: Rethinking Journals Processing In The E-Journals Environment At The University Of South Florida, Carol Ann Borchert
Coping With Hobgoblins: Rethinking Journals Processing In The E-Journals Environment At The University Of South Florida, Carol Ann Borchert
Academic Resources Faculty and Staff Publications
Many libraries grapple with how to develop new skills for processing electronic journals, while still handling the print format as well. Journals in a print format have always been complex, and adding the electronic component has made them more so. Few libraries are adding staff to handle this workload. The University of South Florida Tampa Library has tried a number of workflow changes--not always successfully--to handle this transition. This paper will explore these changes, explaining why some were not successful and why others have resulted in efficiencies, and concludes with lessons learned that could benefit others.
A Comparative Study Of Methods To Explore Searchers' Affective Perceptions Of Images, Jungwon Yoon
A Comparative Study Of Methods To Explore Searchers' Affective Perceptions Of Images, Jungwon Yoon
School of Information Faculty Publications
Introduction. Previous search query analysis studies demonstrated that emotional perceptions and needs tend not to be sufficiently reflected in image queries. To provide a better understanding of the emotional attributes of an image, this study explored and compared such attributes obtained from related tasks.
Method. This study analysed attributes of an image through sorting, describing and searching. A data-set was obtained from Flickr images tagged with one of six basic emotions (love, joy, surprise, anger, sadness and fear); fifty-nine students participated.
Results. The sorting and describing tasks revealed two categories of emotions, joy and sadness, which people perceive from …

Library Department and Committee Reports
This report began as a charge from the Dean of Library to investigate the anticipated costs of electronic resources required to support university teaching and research; including staffing, staff training, licensing and purchasing of data and resources, and the technology required to store, and remotely access resources. The committee also examined expenditures on electronic resources by other institutions, both within State of Florida public higher education, and in comparison to institutions similar in size and programmatic characteristics to USFSP. After considering the many factors that must influence the one-time and recurring expenses, the Committee concludes that to provide electronic resources …
