Designing Low-Cost Mobile Websites For Libraries, Tiffini Travis, Chee Hsien Aaron (Zheng Zhixian) Tay

Research Collection Library

As smartphone ownership rises, usage patterns are expanding. Libraries face an increasing demand for online content delivered in a mobile compatible format while being constrained by financial and staffing limitations. Solutions are readily available through free and low-cost products to create mobile web pages and existing design models from which to draw inspiration. Platform-specific apps can easily support the kinds of content most commonly delivered on library mobile pages: basic contact information and outbound links to the catalog, databases, and other resources. Two software platforms for creating simple pages were tested, the free software from WordPress with mobile detection formatting …

Greening Of Ill At Himmelfarb Library, Yvonne Lee, Alek Potrzebowski, Kathe Obrig

Himmelfarb Library Faculty Posters and Presentations

Traditionally, the Interlibrary Loan (ILL) Department consumed the largest amount of paper from routine printing of articles/chapters before delivery. In 2010, staff examined existing processes to find ways to print only when necessary and become a greener department. This poster presentation explains the implementation and the outcomes of the "greening" initiative in the Interlibrary Loan (ILL) Department of the Himmelfarb Health Sciences Library.

Understanding The Data Management Needs And Data Sharing Challenges Of Environmental Scientists, Carol Tenopir, Suzie Allard, Miriam L.E. Steiner Davis Sep 2011

Understanding The Data Management Needs And Data Sharing Challenges Of Environmental Scientists, Carol Tenopir, Suzie Allard, Miriam L.E. Steiner Davis

DataONE Sociocultural and Usability & Assessment Working Groups

Surveys of scientists for the NSF DataONE project and the USGS Southeast Information Node of the National Biological Information Infrastructure (NBII), as well as follow-up interviews, show that environmental scientists are interested in sharing their data with certain conditions, such as citations or acknowledgment. Government scientists are more likely to be satisfied with the processes for data management than are academic scientists, but less likely to be satisfied with the process of describing data or tools for documentation. Both groups value trusted and complete sources. There are many ways that scientists can be assisted with data management throughout the data …

Review Of Science For Science Librarians: Graphene, Kathleen A. Lehman Jun 2011

Review Of Science For Science Librarians: Graphene, Kathleen A. Lehman

University Libraries Faculty Publications and Presentations

Graphene is, in many ways, a simple substance. Made of a single atomic layer of graphite, graphene has emerged as a material providing many surprises and having immense scientific and industrial potential. In 2010, scientists Andre K. Geim and Konstantin S. Novoselov received the Nobel Prize in Physics for their isolation of graphene and for their research pertaining to the ultrathin material. In his presentation speech, Professor Per Delsing described how we all have made graphene each time we write with a pencil: microscopic bits of graphite and graphene flake away as the pencil moves across the paper (Delsing 2010). …

Management And Support Of Shared Integrated Library Systems, Jason Vaughan, Kristen Costello Jun 2011

Management And Support Of Shared Integrated Library Systems, Jason Vaughan, Kristen Costello

Library Faculty Publications

The University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) University Libraries has hosted and managed a shared integrated library system (ILS) since 1989. The system and the number of partner libraries sharing the system has grown significantly over the past two decades. Spurred by the level of involvement and support contributed by the host institution, the authors administered a comprehensive survey to current Innovative Interfaces libraries. Research findings are combined with a description of UNLV’s local practices to provide substantial insights into shared funding, support, and management activities associated with shared systems.

Developing A Library Value Indicator For A Disciplinary Population, Jeanne M. Brown Apr 2011

Developing A Library Value Indicator For A Disciplinary Population, Jeanne M. Brown

Library Faculty Publications

Three different ways of documenting library value were presented to fourth year landscape architecture students in the UNLV School of Architecture: a contingent valuation survey, a library calculator, and a survey to rate importance and impact of library services and features. Students used the three approaches, then discussed their experiences with the author. Their input suggested improvements in the instruments and provided feedback on possible positive and negative consequences of inviting this kind of valuing. Working with a focused collection and population provided a relatively safe environment to explore concerns about negative consequences.

Demonstrating Library Value: Examples And Applications For Arts Libraries, Jeanne M. Brown Apr 2011

Demonstrating Library Value: Examples And Applications For Arts Libraries, Jeanne M. Brown

Library Faculty Publications

Demonstrating library value is of critical importance to all libraries, both to protect services and to serve patrons effectively. This paper presents suggestions for art and architecture libraries as they engage in determining what patrons value and documenting that value for library and campus administrators. Methods for calculating worth and for presenting a case are provided, as are ways of using strategic thinking and the assessment process to ensure the continuance of valuable services should budget reductions be unavoidable.

Profiles In Science: Stephen Hawking, Kathleen A. Lehman Mar 2011

Profiles In Science: Stephen Hawking, Kathleen A. Lehman

University Libraries Faculty Publications and Presentations

While Stephen Hawking’s early academic career lacked focus, the development of motor neuron disease straining against his hopes for a fulfilling life pulled the young scientist’s work together. He has since become the world’s most famous scientist due, in part, to his strong belief that science should be accessible to the general public. Hawking has published frequently for the academic community but has also published for the lay reader. His life has been recorded and examined by several biographers. This paper gives an overview of Hawking’s early life, academic career, his academic and popular publications, as well as a few …

Folksonomy-Based User-Centric Information Organization Systems, Devendra Potnis Jan 2011

Folksonomy-Based User-Centric Information Organization Systems, Devendra Potnis

School of Information Sciences -- Faculty Publications and Other Works

After the rise of Web 2.0 technologies, Folksonomy emerged as one of the most popular user-centric information organization techniques in the newly reforming digital world. ln the context of the rising popularity of folksonomies, this paper conceptually investigates -- how can folksonomies be integrated with other ways of organizing information for building systems that could serve information users better in the future? A set of experimentation ideas of integrating folksonomy with controlled vocabularies, bibliometric maps, thesaurus-based systems, ontologies, and semantic web could inform and catalyze the design and development of folksonomy-based user-centric information organization systems in the future.
