The purpose of this document is to provide guidelines, with examples, for the usage of Library of Congress Genre/Form Terms for Library and Archival Materials (LCGFT) for moving image materials. These guidelines are intended to complement existing official guidelines. As genre/form practice in general is currently being reviewed by several other committees, these guidelines will need to be revisited in the future; however, these best practices fulfill the need for short-term guidance.

Resource Description and Access or RDA is a set of guidelines and instructions on resource description and access for the cataloging of library materials covering all types of content and media. RDA is the successor to the second edition of the Anglo-American Cataloging Rules (AACR2) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AACR2, the current standard set of cataloging. This new set of cataloging rules was needed to bring together different editions and formats of a work, to fit better with emerging technologies, and to be a better way of cataloging digital materials. This talk is an introduction to RDA.

In 2009, the Consortium of Academic and Research Libraries in Illinois (CARLI) charged a task force to update and revise recommendations that address cataloging practice and catalog access to electronic resources for libraries participating in the I-Share union catalog. The United States federal government publications were little known and underutilized in the majority of the OPAL (Ohio Private Academic Libraries) depository libraries, as the majority of the collections were not in the online catalog before 1998. The limited financial and human resources of these small academic libraries demanded effective collaboration among the libraries, the commercial vendors and service providers, the local administrations, and the library staff members to automate the collection. However, making collaboration work at operational and strategic levels can be a daunting management challenge.

Creating Collections Through Collaboration: An Innovative Digital Library Project In Monteverde, Costa Rica, Laurie Kutner, Cindy Dykes, Stefanie Havelka

The proposed presentation will focus on a successful cross-cultural and cross-institutional collaborative model, involving four institutions, that was developed to create digital library collections of research-based information generated in the Monteverde Zone in Costa Rica. Addressing a need for the Monteverde community to have easy access to locally-produced research-based information, the digital collections contain unpublished research documents produced by area international study programs focusing on local sustainable community development, community health, and tropical ecology.

This article discusses the barriers that exist between library bibliographic data and other data available on the World Wide Web. The isolation of this bibliographic data is a problem that impacts on the successful integration of the library catalogue into the potential semantic Web of the future. It will look at two available data models for bibliographic data and introduces the Resource Description Framework (RDF) which has emerged as the preferred data model for enabling linked data on the Web. The new cataloguing guidelines Resource Description and Access (RDA) have recently been released and are set to replace the Anglo-American Cataloguing Rules. An evaluation period led by the Library of Congress is currently underway and it is likely that the implementation of RDA will begin sometime in mid- 2011. This paper looks briefly at the origins of RDA, provides a high level overview of RDA and reviews some of the major differences that cataloguers and library users can expect to find between RDA and AACR2.

This paper presents a case study program implemented at Columbia University Libraries that trains copy catalogers in Program for Cooperative Cataloging (PCC) and Name Authority Cooperative Program (NACO) principles. Under the guidance of the NACO coordinator and cataloging supervisors, copy catalogers create PCC-level records for belles lettres materials, construct name and. uniform title headings, and submit classification number proposals for literary authors in a variety of languages in both roman and nonroman scripts. The benefits of the program include timely and efficient processing of materials, high-quality bibliographic records, better collocation of belles lettres, and upgrade of vendor or member records …

Digital Image Databases: A Study From The Undergraduate Point Of View, Teresa Slobuski

This article investigates current metadata practices in art image databases. Searches were completed in the Bridgeman Education and ARTstor databases using only terms found in introductory art history texts. Details from the search results point to overalltrends in the data and offer comparisons between the databases for particular search sets. The examples reveal tendencies in precision,recall, and consistency, as well as identify some particular issues that may impede successful retrieval for the novice user. A short discussion on the usability of both of the databases' interfaces offers further insight into their respective strengths andpeculiarities.
