Nellco’S Universal Search Solution: A Report On A Nasig 2009 Conference Session, Barbara M. Pope

This article summarizes a session at the 24th Annual North American Serials Interest Group (NASIG) Conference held in Asheville, NC on June 6, 2009. The presenter for the session, Roberta F. Woods of Franklin Pierce Law Center, gave the history behind the New England Law Library Consortium (NELLCO) development of an alternative to a federated search engine that they dubbed Universal Search Solution. The search tool helped the consortia libraries to resolve their problem of underutilized resources.

Moving Mountains And Crossing Rivers: A Report From The Second Conference On Library Physical Delivery, Valerie Horton

This article is a summary of the second Moving Mountains Conference on the physical delivery of materials. The Conference was held in Cincinnati in September 2008. An ad hoc group of librarians involved in delivery regularly meet to discuss best practices and new applications. This article covers similarities between the logistic industry and libraries, a survey of physical delivery practitioners, and new trends in home delivery and automatic material handling systems. This article also discusses the growth of physical delivery, models of delivery, vendor relationships, and the Rethinking Resource Sharing group.

The non-tenured faculty at Stony Brook University Libraries has implemented an annual one-day retreat which includes presentations, posters of research in progress, group activities, and a discussion of current library issues. The retreats have inspired junior faculty members and assisted them in forming a supportive network of peer mentoring for guidance through the tenure process.

From July to October, 2008, Laura Crossett, Joseph Kraus and Steve Lawson organized the Library Camp of the West (http://librarycampwest.pbwiki.com/). This was an unconference that took place on October 10, 2008 at the University of Denver. The authors used many technology tools to organize the event, such as email, wikis, blogs, two tools from Google, the Doodle scheduling Website, Flickr and more. This article will explain how they used those tools to prepare for the unconference.

This article provides an overview of Volunteer Voices, Tennessee’s statewide digitization program. The authors focus on the three-year Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) National Leadership Grant that provided the foundation for future growth of the digitization program. In addition to an overview of the content selection, metadata issues, software selection, digital preservation, and K-12 education emphasis of the grant project, the article includes a detailed description of the work done by the digitization and content specialists from across the state who selected and scanned items. Collaborative Librarianship has an impressive Advisory Board, none more so than the brilliant, original, and always challenging Stephen Abram. Abram has a long and distinguished career as illustrated by the biography below, but it isn’t just his achievements that set Abram apart. He is a strong supporter of library cooperation and rethinking our profession. He is also fearlessness in confronting our sacred cows and hidebound thinking. At conferences, his audiences come away with Abram’s clear voice echoing a sober but potentially bright future for libraries; and occasionally they leave angry, stirred up by his bold willingness to tackle controversial topics.

Research Library Collaboration In Colorado – The Birth And Early Evolution Of Carl, The Colorado Alliance Of Research Libraries, Steven Fisher

The Colorado Alliance of Research Libraries (CARL) was a pioneering library consortium that evolved from a small informal group of research library directors known as the “Taskforce for Interlibrary Cooperation” in the early 1970s. Early projects included shared acquisitions funding, a union list of serials, and a shared public access catalog. Drawing upon published sources, unpublished primary sources, archival records and personal interviews with early participants, this article provides an account of the key individuals of the organization, the technological innovations of CARL, and its legacy within the library community.

In 2008, seven Michigan public libraries migrated to Evergreen, an open source integrated library system developed by the George Public Library Service. The Michigan Library Consortium and Grand Rapids Public Library provided the support, training, networking, and system administration for the system. This article examines the reasons for implementing an open source system and the challenges to running and sustaining it.

On April 10, 2009, the Alliance, a consortium of academic, public and special libraries in Colorado and Wyoming, convened a conference on “Cooperation: How to Thrive Despite Reduced Funding.” Drawing on the expertise of national and state leaders in the fields of education and economics, conference participants heard from two keynote speakers about the changing environment of libraries and educational institutions. Referencing these changes, then, various local librarians explored ways collaboratively to advance library resources and services.
