Values: A Christian Perspective, A Response To Michael Gorman, J. Ray Doerksen Jan 2001

Values: A Christian Perspective, A Response To Michael Gorman, J. Ray Doerksen

The Christian Librarian

Michael Gorman's recent challenge to Christian librarians at the ACL annual conference in San Diego begs for a response. What was the nature of that challenge? It was that we, as Christian librarians, should share values that can be derived completely from a humanistic perspective. It would be surprising if a humanistic perspective could successfully articulate Christian values, and in this case, there is no surprise.

A Biblical View Of Library Administration, John Allen Delivuk Jan 2001

A Biblical View Of Library Administration, John Allen Delivuk

The Christian Librarian

While individuals sometimes do worthwhile tasks working by themselves, most of the work of modern civilization is done by people working together in groups. Groups require administration. This essay examines some aspects of the role of administration and administrators in libraries from a biblical point of view.

Where Did They Come From? A Tribute To Shirley N. Wood, Jo Ann Rhodes Jan 2001

Where Did They Come From? A Tribute To Shirley N. Wood, Jo Ann Rhodes

The Christian Librarian

The contributions of people like Shirley Wood, one of the founders of the Association of Christian Librarians, often go unnoticed due to the selflessness of their service. It is good to be reminded once in a while that what we take for granted in our 21st century library work was at one time the result of some former librarian's creativity. In the Christian library community, an individual's contributions are frequently done quietly, which is the way it should be if one wished to serve in the Scriptural way of not calling attention to oneself or one's service. Shirley Wood expended …

The Christian Librarian

Forget the hoopla of New Years Day 2000; we know that January 1, 2001 actually marks the beginning of the 21" century. That fact notwithstanding, in this first issue of The Christian Librarian for the new millennium you will find a "business as usual" attitude. Perhaps that is because not all of the TCL team members share my mathematical insistence this is really the first month of the new millennium, but more likely it is because my colleagues are more concerned about the realities of Christian librarianship in the real world than they are in sophomoric niceties.

The Y Factor, J. Ray Doerksen Jan 2001

The Y Factor, J. Ray Doerksen

The Christian Librarian

In my last column, I discussed the Sabbath in terms of its personal, physical and spiritual dimensions. In this column I want to examine its implications for corporate institutions such as Christian colleges and universities-and the libraries that serve them.

As you remember, there is physical significance-as well as spiritual-to the concept of Sabbath. God instituted a rhythm of work and rest. Probably all of us agree that periodic rest is a good thing for us as human beings. Does the same principle apply to corporate institutions, or does the fact that people only work five or six days in …

The Y Factor, J. Ray Doerksen

The Christian Librarian

The Sabbath issue is finished. Now it is time to take a rest (pun intended). I probably benefited from my study of the issue more than any of you, but that is what I love about education-there is so much to learn. In "The Y Factor," I usually focus on the noun in the title of this journal, addressing issues of librarianship. Today, I want to concentrate on the adjective -- "Christian".

Objectivity, Values, And The Christian Librarian, Steve Baker Jan 2001

Objectivity, Values, And The Christian Librarian, Steve Baker

The Christian Librarian

The central questions of Christian librarianship in the postmodern world involve the philosophical grounds of collection development. Are there reliable objective grounds for attempting to build balanced collections? What values ought to guide the librarian in this task? How will the application of those values differ in the context of an evangelical Christian institution?

Librarians Across The Sea: Acl And Missions, Wilbur E. Cropley Jan 2001

Librarians Across The Sea: Acl And Missions, Wilbur E. Cropley

The Christian Librarian

The Association of Christian Librarians (ACL) is missions-hearted, missions-minded, and missions-handled. This stance was vital to the founders. It is also vital for the calling and ministry of the present membership. We shall expand and illustrate these statements. The past, present development, and future will be covered.

The Y Factor, J. Ray Doerksen Jan 2001

The Y Factor, J. Ray Doerksen

The Christian Librarian

Since God was able to get creation (not a small job) finished in six days, why do Christians need seven days to get their work done?

I posed a question to the ACL listserv: If your library is open on Sunday, why? My question was meant to elicit reasons, or justifications, from those who choose to open on Sunday. A number of thoughtful responses returned. It is clear that many librarians struggle with this issue, both on a personal and professional level. Some have solved the problem to their satisfaction; others have assumed a pragmatic stance - they do what …

Bolivia Or Bust: Cila Memories, Dennis C. Tucker Jan 2001

Bolivia Or Bust: Cila Memories, Dennis C. Tucker

The Christian Librarian

The first tentative talks about the possibility of a teaching mission to Bolivia began in June of 1998 at the annual conference of the Association of Christian Librarians. We had a semi-formal meeting to discuss the possibility at the 1999 annual conference-nearly a year before it would actually happen-at a meeting of the Commission for International Library Assistance (CILA), a ministry of the Association. The mission of CILA is to provide support for libraries in developing countries where there is a lack of formal training or financial resources. It does so by serving as an umbrella organization to coordinate requests …

Editorial, Diane Sullivan Garber

The Christian Librarian

As I write, jackhammers are pounding above my office. Water leaks have been pouring in on our book stacks. Dust and debris litter the hallways outside the library. Anyone who has endured a home renovation or library expansion project may relate to this chaos and upheaval.

Search Engines Giving You Garbage? Put A "Corc" In It, Implementing The Cooperative Online Resource Catalog, Robert O. Ellett Jr. Jan 2001

Search Engines Giving You Garbage? Put A "Corc" In It, Implementing The Cooperative Online Resource Catalog, Robert O. Ellett Jr.

The Christian Librarian

This paper presents an implementation strategy for adding Internet resources to a library online catalog using OCLC's Cooperative Online Resource Catalog (CORC). Areas of consideration include deciding which electronic resources to include in the online catalog and how to select them. The value and importance of pathfinders in creating electronic bibliographies and the role of library staff in updating them is introduced. Using an electronic suggestion form as a means of Internet resource collection development is another innovative method of enriching library collections. Education and training for cataloging staff on Dublin Core elements is also needed. Attention should be paid …

For those of us serving in the academic community a new year has just begun - the fall semester or quarter is upon us. Students have returned to campus and summer-quiet library halls are now ringing with stage "whispers," book drops filling with materials rediscovered on unpacking day.

Virtues Or Values? Behind The Values Controversy, John Allen Delivuk Jan 2001

Virtues Or Values? Behind The Values Controversy, John Allen Delivuk

The Christian Librarian

The American Library Association (ALA) has initiated a process of defining the values of libraries. This process has influenced Christian librarians. For example, the Association of Christian Librarians (ACL) invited Michael Gorman, author of Our Enduring Values, to speak at its 2000 conference.

Russian Soldiers Move Library!, Lois L. Luesing Jan 2001

Russian Soldiers Move Library!, Lois L. Luesing

The Christian Librarian

How does one make plans to move a library from one building, across town, and into a new site when that site is thousands of miles away from where you are in Michigan? One evening I was trying to come up with an idea of how to proceed. Suddenly there flashed into my mind a plan that I quickly wrote down. It was that very plan that we used at St. Petersburg Christian University in Russia. Surely the Lord gave it.
