Review Of Residencies Revisited: Reflections On Library Residency Programs From The Past And Present, K. Adolpho

VCU Libraries Faculty and Staff Publications

In Residencies Revisited, editors Preethi Gorecki and Arielle Petrovich compile essays and narratives from current and former diversity resident librarians, residency scholars, and other residency stakeholders to discuss challenges, opportunities, success, and the future of residency programs. The opportunities that diversity residency programs provide for recent graduates have been discussed for decades. This collection, which centers the experiences of diversity residents, will help academic librarians and administrators better understand the harm of these programs, if they are not carefully planned, well-structured, supported, and resident-centered. Residencies Revisited is long-awaited and essential reading for those involved in planning, implementing, and proposing …

Review Of Diversity And Inclusion In Libraries: A Call To Action And Strategies For Success, By Shannon D. Jones And Beverly Murphy, Kelli Johnson

Librarian Research

We have been talking about diversity and inclusion in the library world for a long time. There have been articles and books written on the subject. There are sessions at conferences. Our communities and our patrons are more diverse, so why hasn’t the profession become more diverse? Shannon Jones and Beverly Murphy have addressed the issue of making libraries more diverse and inclusive, taking it head-on with a systematic review of what diversity and inclusion mean for libraries and why they are important. But they don’t stop there. They segue into discussions on how to make our libraries and our …

JETstream: Library Newsletter

It was the ancient Greek philosopher Heraclitus that once said: "the only thing that is constant is change.” Over the last several years, we have certainly witnessed many exciting changes here at Molloy and the library is no exception. At the JET Library we are constantly evolving and transforming to best provide the Molloy community with premium resources, high-level services and accommodating spaces. Although the library lost a stack room this past summer with recent campus renovations, we did gain some space when we repurposed one of our stack rooms into a much needed and highly requested by students, Quiet …

Review Of Science In The Archives: Pasts, Presents, Futures, Charlie Harper Jul 2019

Review Of Science In The Archives: Pasts, Presents, Futures, Charlie Harper

Researchers, Instructors, & Staff Scholarship

Review of Science in the Archives, an edited volume of 12 essays that emerged from a working group held at the Max Planck Institute for History and Science in 2013 and 2014. This working group sought to develop a shared framework for thinking about how the sciences choose to remember past findings and plan future research (p. vii). The quest for such a shared framework, by necessity, calls for the crossing of long-standing temporal and disciplinary boundaries that artificially silo and separate. Drawing together a cohort of practitioners to build such a framework is no easy task, but this compendium …

JETstream: Library Newsletter

Although the calendar indicated otherwise, with the countless snowstorms these past few months, it seemed as if spring would never arrive. But alas, spring has sprung at Molloy and with that, the end of the Spring 2018 semester. So before many of you leave for your summer breaks or vacations, I invite you to peruse our latest edition of JETstream, perhaps even take it along with you as your summer read! Although summer tends to be when we might experience a bit of a respite on campus, that was certainly not the case here at the JET Library. The library underwent some significant renovations to two of our instruction rooms, Educational Resource Center, and the Suffolk Extension Center Library. We also acquired several new products and technologies such as the DigitalCommons and BrowZine, which you may read about further in this issue of JETstream. At the start of the semester, we continued our annual tradition of hosting the JET Library Pizza Party to welcome the incoming freshmen, as well as our …

Do We Still Need Peer Review? An Argument For Change [Review], Michael J. Hughes Jan 2015

Do We Still Need Peer Review? An Argument For Change [Review], Michael J. Hughes

Library Faculty Research

How long has peer review been in crisis? At what point does crisis outlast emergency to become status quo? Attacks on the weaknesses of peer review appear with such regularity that they have migrated from scholarly journals to newspapers and magazines. Notwithstanding criticism—and bold experiments such as the experimental open peer review given online to Kathleen Fitzpatrick’s 2011 book Planned Obsolescence before its publication—the gears grind on, due in large part to the reward systems built around the mechanism of blind and anonymous review.
