In this article we reflect on our time as editors of JMS during the period 2003-09. First we describe the context as we saw it on assuming editorship of the Journal and the actions that we took to improve the quality of scholarship published in the journal in order to set JMS on the trajectory to become a world-leading Journal. We articulate our view of what quality means in this context and observe that we eschewed the USA-Europe divide. Rather, to be publishable, all papers had to meet the highest standards relative to their epistemological assumptions. Finally, we address two …
The Importance Of Digitization In Teaching-Oriented University And College Libraries, Craighton T. Hippenhammer
The Importance Of Digitization In Teaching-Oriented University And College Libraries, Craighton T. Hippenhammer
Faculty Scholarship – Library Science
An increasing number of university and college libraries have started digitization programs and there are good reasons why they are doing so. First, we are in the middle of revolutionary change as to how ideas get published and distributed. Over 50 percent of scholarly publishing has gone digital and over 20 percent has gone open access. Governments worldwide are beginning to require tax-supported research be published in open access venues. Secondly, it is imperative that they increase their Archives’ digital presence. Preserving institutional histories is currently being lost because of the entirely digital way academics now communicate and many archives …

Print publishing relies on enclosure of information in a physical object (book). The digital environment potentially increases access (online journals). Publishers, however, can implement control beyond that which is possible in a print world; for example, license agreements that try to restrict user rights such as fair dealing. Open access is an increasingly popular publishing option, and represents a progressive application of technology and alternatives to traditional intellectual property. This moderated panel discussion with University of Western Ontario scholars, is an introduction to the origins of problems in scholarly publishing, current open access initiatives, and educational policies.

The Many Shades Of Open Access: The History And Future Of Open Access Initiatives At Purdue University, David Scherer
The Many Shades Of Open Access: The History And Future Of Open Access Initiatives At Purdue University, David Scherer
Libraries Faculty and Staff Presentations
For an area with the common goal of providing free online public access to scholarship and research, the ways in which Open Access are accomplished can be very different. Just as there is green, blue, yellow, and gold open access, there can also be different “colors” of open access activities and initiatives. This presentation addresses some of the open access initiatives currently in use and in development at Purdue University to increase access to scholarship. Presented at the 3rd Annual Great Lakes e-Summit Conference, September 23, 2013, Oregon, Ohio.

Cultures Of Access: Differences In Rhetoric Around Open Access Repositories In Africa And The United States And Their Implications For The Open Access Movement, Natalia T. Bowdoin
Faculty Publications
Open Access (OA) refers to free, online access to peer reviewed scholarship. Many OA proponents view OA as a potential mechanism for reversing inequities in information flows between industrialized and non-industrialized nations. The "green road" of OA (self-archiving in an OA institutional repository) has seen substantial growth in African nations where there have historically been chronic problems both with access to scholarly and scientific materials and participation in the larger scholarly and scientific community. For this study I examined the rhetoric used by OA institutional repositories and what this rhetoric may say about different "cultures of OA". I conducted textual …

An increasing number of higher education institutions worldwide are requiring submission of electronic theses and dissertations (ETDs) by graduate students and are subsequently providing open access to these works in online repositories. Faculty advisors and graduate students are concerned that such unfettered access to their work could diminish future publishing opportunities. This study investigated social sciences, arts, and humanities journal editors’ and university press directors’ attitudes toward ETDs. The findings indicate that manuscripts that are revisions of openly accessible ETDs are always welcome for submission or considered on a case-by-case basis by 82.8 percent of journal editors and 53.7 percent …
Scientific Communication Before And After Networked Science, John Carey
Scientific Communication Before And After Networked Science, John Carey
Publications and Research
Recent decades have seen extensive changes in how researchers in the sciences work. Online platforms enabled by Web 2.0 technologies (collectively known as “open” or “networked” science) have created multiple new channels for informal communications, revolutionizing the ways in which scientists collaborate and share results. Meanwhile, digitization and open access publishing have brought fundamental change to modes of publication and distribution for scientific journals. Yet the primary vehicle for the formal publication of results, the scientific article, has been much slower to alter in format. This paper will examine the functions that peer-reviewed journals have served within the scientific community …

The open access movement has been going strong for over a decade. Large research universities tend to have the oldest and most active programs. Their work is inspiring, but it can be challenging for librarians at smaller institutions to identify ways to contribute to the movement.
Gettysburg College launched its institutional repository in 2012. This presentation tells how we got started.

Open education resources (OER) are freely available materials for educators and learners. The open education movement is quickly expanding to include free textbooks, open courseware, and new models of delivering educational content. With expertise in the areas of open access, copyright, and institutional repositories, Librarians are well-suited to lead open education initiatives. This session discusses strategies for implementing open education initiatives, showcasing and preserving open education materials, and building partnerships to sustain this movement.

Bypassing Roadblocks To Technical Information: Locating Freely Available Technical Information For Entrepreneurs, Anne E. Rauh
Libraries' and Librarians' Publications
If you have ever had to seek technical information, you have probably run into an information access roadblock or a pay-wall. This is a major issue for our students as they leave our universities and our subscription resources and move on to become practitioners of their field. This session will outline the different types of freely available technical information - including patents, government funded technical reports, and open access journal literature - and demonstrate how to access them. The session will also give examples of how to integrate these resources into the classroom through design projects and information seeking assignments. …

The Open Access Initiatives at Utah State University are tightly integrated with our collection development goals, and perhaps more importantly, our budget. Our collections budget provides financial support for our Bepress DigitalCommons repository, as well as funding to support our faculty authors who choose to publish in author-pays OA journals. While we recognize the important service provided by traditional publishers, our hope for the long run is to change the conversation in our library-publisher relationships such that we may eventually have remaining funds to provide even more resources to our University community. This presentation will explore the keys to the …

OAPEN-UK is the United Kingdom branch of Open Access Publishing in European Networks, a research project that aims to devise a comprehensive, equitable, and sustainable model for Open Access (OA) publishing in the humanities and social sciences (HSS) that is agreeable to all stakeholders: publishers, authors, readers, librarians, and others. The heart of the project is a pilot involving an experimental group of 29 OA titles paired with the same number of traditional route-to-market books in a control group. Matched as closely as possible by subject, timeliness, price, format, and sales over time, the monographs are made discoverable via MARC …

I have been privileged during my lifetime to always have the opportunity to learn about something if I wanted to. When I became interested in music and psychology—or even when I was learning how to apply for college—I googled it. The resources to obtain information have always been there for me: access to computers, the internet, books, journals. It is hard to imagine my life without a computer or access to books to learn about the world, and even harder to imagine if I did not know how to read or write. For this, I can thank my education and …

In January 2011 the Journal of Humanistic Mathematics (JHM) published its first issue. JHM (http://scholarship.claremont.edu/jhm) is an online-only, peer-reviewed, open-access journal which has passed the all important ten-thousand-download barrier in its first anniversary. In order to remain faithful to the fundamental principles of open access, JHM uses Creative Commons licensing, where authors retain copyright of their work, but others are free to reuse them (with proper attribution). In this note I share and reflect upon our experience with open access and Creative Commons.
