Cultures Of Access: Differences In Rhetoric Around Open Access Repositories In Africa And The United States And Their Implications For The Open Access Movement, Natalia T. Bowdoin Aug 2013

Cultures Of Access: Differences In Rhetoric Around Open Access Repositories In Africa And The United States And Their Implications For The Open Access Movement, Natalia T. Bowdoin

Faculty Publications

Open Access (OA) refers to free, online access to peer reviewed scholarship. Many OA proponents view OA as a potential mechanism for reversing inequities in information flows between industrialized and non-industrialized nations. The "green road" of OA (self-archiving in an OA institutional repository) has seen substantial growth in African nations where there have historically been chronic problems both with access to scholarly and scientific materials and participation in the larger scholarly and scientific community. For this study I examined the rhetoric used by OA institutional repositories and what this rhetoric may say about different "cultures of OA". I conducted textual …

Do Open Access Electronic Theses And Dissertations Diminish Publishing Opportunities In The Social Sciences And Humanities? Findings From A 2011 Survey Of Academic Publishers, Marisa L. Ramirez, Joan T. Dalton, Gail Mcmillan, Max Read, Nan H. Seamans

Leddy Library Publications

An increasing number of higher education institutions worldwide are requiring submission of electronic theses and dissertations (ETDs) by graduate students and are subsequently providing open access to these works in online repositories. Faculty advisors and graduate students are concerned that such unfettered access to their work could diminish future publishing opportunities. This study investigated social sciences, arts, and humanities journal editors’ and university press directors’ attitudes toward ETDs. The findings indicate that manuscripts that are revisions of openly accessible ETDs are always welcome for submission or considered on a case-by-case basis by 82.8 percent of journal editors and 53.7 percent …

The Changing Roles Of Repositories: Where We Are And Where We Are Headed, Karen Bjork, David Isaak, Kay Vyhnanek

Library Faculty Publications and Presentations

This presentation examines the past, present, and future role of institutional repositories (IRs). IRs rapidly rose to prominence in libraries, but failed to live up to the promise of transforming scholarly communication. A decade since the debut of DSpace, IRs today look very different in their content and services. We will present the results of an in‐depth survey of repository managers. The role of IRs is now evolving to include support for data curation, e‐research, and scholarly networks. The session concluded with a discussion of how repository managers can better network and share expertise. Files ending in .csv are plain-text, …

Bypassing Roadblocks To Technical Information: Locating Freely Available Technical Information For Entrepreneurs, Anne E. Rauh

Libraries' and Librarians' Publications

If you have ever had to seek technical information, you have probably run into an information access roadblock or a pay-wall. This is a major issue for our students as they leave our universities and our subscription resources and move on to become practitioners of their field. This session will outline the different types of freely available technical information - including patents, government funded technical reports, and open access journal literature - and demonstrate how to access them. The session will also give examples of how to integrate these resources into the classroom through design projects and information seeking assignments. …

Creating New Partnerships: Strategies For Growing Your Repository, Karen Bjork, Sue Kunda, David Isaak, Kay Vyhnanek

Library Faculty Publications and Presentations

This presentation was given February 8 at Online NW 2013 in Corvallis, OR. Academic institutions, as well as private corporations, have taken on the responsibility of building institutional repositories in order to collect, manage, archive and provide access to the intellectual work taking place on their respective campuses. Over the years, building or procuring a repository has become fairly straightforward. Filling it hasn't. Convincing faculty and academic units to contribute their research and scholarship is still a struggle for most repository owners and requires equal parts determination, imagination and perspiration. Join four repository managers from OSU, PSU, WSU and Kaiser …

Publishing Open Access E-Journals: Leveraging An Outreach Opportunity, Laura Edwards, Linda Sizemore, Kelly Smith

Library Faculty and Staff Papers and Presentations

Eastern Kentucky University (EKU) Libraries began exploring the institutional repository (IR) landscape in 2009 with the intention of publishing electronic theses and dissertations (ETDs), journals, special collections, images, videos, sound files, or anything else that would fit a need for us. The hosted systems we examined were effective as either platforms for displaying special collections or platforms for managing publishing processes. However, we didn’t find a system that did both of those things well.

The Aga Khan University (AKU) is serving through eleven campuses spread across eight countries in three continents. It has a network of eleven libraries, although small in size, in five developing courtiers in three regions (South Asia, East Africa, and Europe). The university has recently implemented an Institutional Repository (IR) system to show-case the intellectual and scholarly output of the university. The selection of this system was done after a thorough study of available platforms, and in line with AKU vision and mission. The stakeholders were involved in decision making. After a careful evaluation of the teams involved, Digital Commons …

Open Access To Scholarly Literature: Which Side Are You On?, Jill Cirasella Jan 2013

Open Access To Scholarly Literature: Which Side Are You On?, Jill Cirasella

Publications and Research

Open access (OA) to scholarly literature recently hit a major milestone: Half of all research articles published become open access, either immediately or after an embargo period. Are the articles you read among them? What about the articles you write? Are the journals to which you submit open-access friendly? What about the journals for which you peer review? Are there any reasons why the public should not have access to the results of taxpayer-funded research?

This presentation explains the motivation for OA, describes the details of OA, and differentiates between publishing in open access journals (“gold” OA) and self-archiving works …

Reducing Barriers To Wesleyan Thought: Olivet Nazarene University And The Wesleyan Holiness Library, Craighton T. Hippenhammer Jan 2013

Reducing Barriers To Wesleyan Thought: Olivet Nazarene University And The Wesleyan Holiness Library, Craighton T. Hippenhammer

Faculty Scholarship – Library Science

Olivet Nazarene University’s recent move to start publishing academic scholarship in a digital institutional repository, Digital Commons, is a smart move to not only highlight and preserve Olivet scholarship, but also to support the worldwide open access movement that is widely expected to rescue the current failing model of academic publishing. The traditional methods for publishing faculty scholarship have been inadequate for some time, and the financial structures that sustain them are collapsing due to skyrocketing journal prices. What faculty members want most for their research is that it be as accessible, available and useful to other researchers and to …
