Engaging With Difficult Topics In The Archives: Suicide And Historical Empathy, Kayla Harris

The development of historical empathy in students is a desired learning outcome in many history curriculums. Although historical empathy is written about frequently in educational literature, it is not addressed in archival journals. The integration of "historical empathy" into archival pedagogy is rich with opportunities. Three archivists discuss their successful collaborations with educators to develop archival projects that incorporate empathy development in a wide range of academic settings.

Kent State University Libraries received a two-year grant in 2016 to aid digitization initiatives around the May 4th Collection. The grant funded digitization of the selection of the large archival collection and the library developed new workflows to address copyright and privacy issues. The session will provide information around complex copyright and privacy issues in archives, including fair use analysis, permission-seeking and review of privacy.

University of North Florida (UNF) Special Collections does not have clear guidelines for collecting ‘rare’ books and maintaining them in our climate-controlled storage. Overcrowding is also a problem in Special Collections’ storage space. Both issues have led to a reassessment project of the noncirculating ‘rare’ books collected over the past 35 to 40 years. In the summer of 2018 UNF’s Resource Description Librarian surveyed the books under the direction of the Head of Special Collections and University Archives. In order to aid digitization of the Kent State University May 4th Collection in preparation for the 50th anniversary, University Libraries received a National Historical Publications and Records Commission (NHPRC) grant which funded digitization of a selection of the large archival collection. Librarians developed new workflows to address copyright and privacy issues in assorted archival materials to be digitized. The session will highlight this work, and also provide information on the approach to complex copyright issues present in many archival collections, including fair use analysis and permission-seeking. Lastly, effective cross-training of staff and student assistants will be reviewed.

The University Archives Department at Indiana State University (ISU) assists faculty, students, and the public by providing access to and preservation of primary resources and ISU history. Despite the resources and services available, archival holdings are often underused and receive few donations from students and student organizations. These students are often unaware of the function and uses of the archives. To address these concerns, Special Collections staff have created a website utilizing the Omeka platform called STATE-IT to engage students with the University Archives.
