Harnessing Generative Ai For Targeted Libguide Development, Autumn Johnson Apr 2024

Harnessing Generative Ai For Targeted Libguide Development, Autumn Johnson

Georgia International Conference on Information Literacy

LibGuides are indispensable tools for librarians, facilitating information literacy teaching in a variety of contexts and enhancing the overall learning experience for users. This is particularly true for guides tailored to specific courses. Course guides and others that closely align with student learning objectives and assignment requirements, provide a more immediate and targeted response to user’s needs. Yet, developing guides with such customized content often proves to be a time-consuming process for Librarian creators.

Librarians might consider leveraging generative AI to assist them in creating guides with more focused and timely content, making their work easier and more efficient. Generative …

From Daunting To Doable: A Practical Approach To Building Inclusive Libguides, Jennifer Elder Mar 2023

From Daunting To Doable: A Practical Approach To Building Inclusive Libguides, Jennifer Elder

Georgia International Conference on Information Literacy

Universal Design for Learning (UDL) is a pedagogical approach that many universities promote to their teaching faculty to help them design courses that are accessible to all learners. After librarians at our library took a course on Universal Design for Learning, we asked, how could we apply Universal Design for Learning principles to create more inclusive LibGuides? At first, we were overwhelmed by the wide range of possible accessibility and UDL features that we could incorporate into our LibGuides. We wondered if there might be a way to identify or prioritize effective UDL elements to include in a LibGuide. We …

Libguides 2.0 Continued: Implementing Best Practices In Design And Accessibility After Migration, Holly Mabry, Jessica Xiong Feb 2020

Libguides 2.0 Continued: Implementing Best Practices In Design And Accessibility After Migration, Holly Mabry, Jessica Xiong

Georgia International Conference on Information Literacy

Since migrating LibGuides from version 1.0 to 2.0 in 2015, librarians at Gardner-Webb University have adopted a continuous evaluation approach that addresses best practices in LibGuides design, accessibility, and instruction techniques. This presentation will provide an overview of Gardner-Webb Library’s experiences with the migration and evaluation process.

The librarians formed a professional learning community (PLC) to choose colors, fonts, and layout templates to use after the migration that would fit in with the university’s branding. In 2018, one of the librarians provided best practices and training in accessibility for people with disabilities. In the summer of 2019, two of the …

Seeking Symbiosis: Designing Libguides That Bring User-Centered Design And Learner-Centered Practice Into Harmony, Vanessa Garofalo, Adrienne Button, Anne Le-Huu Pineault, S. Paige Crowl Feb 2020

Seeking Symbiosis: Designing Libguides That Bring User-Centered Design And Learner-Centered Practice Into Harmony, Vanessa Garofalo, Adrienne Button, Anne Le-Huu Pineault, S. Paige Crowl

Georgia International Conference on Information Literacy

Libraries around the world use LibGuides to create research guides for students. But is the user-centered approach often employed by libraries when creating these guides enough to meet the needs of today’s learners? A small task force of librarians at Oxford College of Emory University set out to answer this question. After studying the literature, it was found that very few studies focus on instructional design principles in the creation of LibGuides. Furthermore, an examination of their own library’s LibGuides revealed that while the guides addressed many issues of usability, learner-centered design was often absent.

(25 minutes) The first portion …

Libguides ~ Ways To Engage Students In First Year Seminars, Carol Wittig Sep 2018

Libguides ~ Ways To Engage Students In First Year Seminars, Carol Wittig

Georgia International Conference on Information Literacy

The University of Richmond offers students an array of First Year Seminars to choose from during the fall and spring of their freshman year. All seminars provide opportunities for critical reading and thinking and establish a foundation for effective written and oral communications skills, information literacy, and library research skills. As a common student experience and taught in lieu of a freshman composition sequence, First Year Seminars offer ways for librarians to collaborate with faculty through Library Research Sessions. The overall goals of the FYS Library Research Sessions are to introduce students to fundamental library resources and services, while developing …

From Chaos To Planned Future: Transforming Libguides From Pathfinders To Learning Objects, Marisol Ramos May 2018

From Chaos To Planned Future: Transforming Libguides From Pathfinders To Learning Objects, Marisol Ramos

ACRL New England Chapter Annual Conference

In 2008, our library adopted LibGuides version 1 as the platform to deliver subject, course, general purpose and topic guides. As a co-chair of the implementation group, our goal was to transition from static web pages to a more dynamic system to deliver information about all our general and subject-specific resources. Over the following years, I realized that our initial goal lacked enough specifics or a clear understanding of what the ultimate purpose was for creating these guides. Should guides simply be lists of resources? or should they be learning objects that allow for unmediated learning? Those were questions that …

The Embedded Library: A Marriage Made In Heaven Or In Hell?, Glenda Myers, Trish Warner Apr 2013

The Embedded Library: A Marriage Made In Heaven Or In Hell?, Glenda Myers, Trish Warner

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

This case study covers a number of areas in which a 90 year old medical library has been able to redefine purpose and services, and considers both the positive as well as the negative aspects of the embedded relationship.

According to the Shumaker assessment of readiness for embeddedness, the Witwatersrand Health Sciences Library (WHSL) and the Faculty of Health Sciences at the University of the Witwatersrand were more than ready to embrace a partnership by 2010. A survey indicated that a high proportion (93.5%) of academic staff felt that evidence-based information literacy (IL) should be included in the formal medical …

Linking Through Libguides: Collaborating With Faculty Through An Adaptable Teaching And Marketing Tool, Kimbel May, Anna Leyba Delgado Jan 2012

Linking Through Libguides: Collaborating With Faculty Through An Adaptable Teaching And Marketing Tool, Kimbel May, Anna Leyba Delgado

LOEX Conference Proceedings 2010

This presentation will demonstrate how LibGuides can be used as a winning teaching and marketing tool to promote collaboration between the library and academic departments that benefit from information literacy instruction. Two librarians with a diverse range of subject liaison responsibilities will illustrate how you can successfully market LibGuides across any and all disciplines and will present examples of LibGuides created as successful research guides and instruction tools.

Ask This Librarian: Integrating Library Tools Into The Online Learning Environment, Molly Beestrum, Kerri Willette Jan 2012

Ask This Librarian: Integrating Library Tools Into The Online Learning Environment, Molly Beestrum, Kerri Willette

LOEX Conference Proceedings 2010

In order to reach learners where they already are, this project integrated LibGuides into two learning management systems using an embeddable widget. Moving the library resources into the students digital home - the LMS - rather than only providing resources within the library organization, we achieved a more user-centered service. Two disparate technologies were used: 1) LibGuides for creating the course guides, and 2) the widget, which is HMTL code that was added to an LMS (Moodle and JICS) and displayed in the course page.

Course Guides (using LibGuides) were created for four pilot course partners. Guides were tailored for …
