Covid-19 Impacts On Electronic Resource Usage At A Regional University, Daniel Moody, Rickey D. Best
Covid-19 Impacts On Electronic Resource Usage At A Regional University, Daniel Moody, Rickey D. Best
The Southeastern Librarian
An analysis of electronic resource usage at a regional university in the southeast during the COVID-19 pandemic showed interesting results. While it was anticipated that movement to online instruction would increase usage of electronic resources, it was discovered that overall usage actually declined for those resources. Virtual reference transactions, however, increased during the pandemic. When meas-uring downloads of full-text of both journals and e-Books in the health sciences, humanities, social sci-ences, and physical sciences, it was discovered that the first three subject areas showed a double digit percentage decline in use, with only the physical sciences showing a decline of …

Distilling A Collection: Creating A Distilling, Fermenting, And Brewing Special Collection At The James E. Walker Library, Alan Boehm, Susan J. Martin, Rachel Kirk

This essay recounts the steps we took to launch the new Distilling, Fermenting, and Brewing Collection in our Special Collections department. It began with the routine task of weeding our general collection but quickly led to other activities which included a broader collection analysis; consideration of campus, local and state resources; consultation with development and fundraising staff; and research in the anti-quarian trade. Knowing what we had and what we could acquire in the book market, surmising the po-tential for private and industry support, and understanding the multiple scholarly possibilities embed-ded in our collection, we embarked on building a resource …

Academic Libraries And Athletics Programs: The Current State Of Select Marketing And Development Partnerships, A. Blake Denton
The Southeastern Librarian
In 2019, this author published a literature review that identified and described 35 partnerships between academic libraries and athletics departments at higher education institutions in the United States, 20 of which were established for library marketing and development purposes. Most of these marketing and development arrangements were forged over a decade ago and the literature documenting them is pri-marily dated. Furthermore, multiple questions were raised about the nature of this type of partnership and the specific terms and conditions of many of these arrangements are not addressed in the known body of literature. In addition to published sources, the present …

Digital Staff Trainings Tools For Rural Public Libraries In Georgia: Challenges, Trends, And Recommendations, Jenny Herring
Digital Staff Trainings Tools For Rural Public Libraries In Georgia: Challenges, Trends, And Recommendations, Jenny Herring
The Southeastern Librarian
For many public libraries, particularly those in rural areas, a lack of funding, staff time, and distance from training locations create barriers to providing training and development to their staff. While stud-ies exist on issues facing rural libraries and on the use of digital training tools in libraries, few studies have combined the two topics. The purpose of this study is to examine the use of digital staff training methods at rural public libraries and includes describing the formats and content of that training. The sampling method will target library administrators and trainers, reached through Georgia Public Library Service’s listservs …

How do public libraries remain relevant and top of mind in their communities, all while giving their patrons the resources they need? They take the library to the people, which is just what the Piedmont Regional Library System did in May, 2020. Just as COVID-19 was sweeping the country, this public library system headquartered in Jefferson, Georgia launched PuRL, the (Pop-up Rolling Library). Think bookmobile, but even better.

Citation Analysis: Availability Of Student Research Poster Citations, Sharon Holderman, Stuart Gaetjens

This citation analysis examines the availability of 1313 citations from student research posters across multiple disciplines at a mid-sized university. The study focuses on whether the cited materials are available via the library or freely online. Results indicate only one-fifth of citations were from library proprietary sources while two-thirds were freely available online. Resource age and discipline also influence availability. This study informs collection development decisions and instruction services and helps define the library’s role of providing information and facilitating information access.

Steadfastly We Serve: Library Resilience During The 1918-19 Spanish Influenza Outbreak And Current Covid-19 Pandemic, Blair Stapleton

Disruptions occur regularly, regardless of size of impact. Disruptions libraries face can include budget cuts, environmental disasters, building issues, and technological failures. Any type of disruption can and will dampen the level of service provided by libraries but the ability to quickly overcome the disruption while moving forward with organizational goals is vital. Resilience in organizations is not a new concept, but the high level of resilience exuded by libraries despite the disruptions they face is worth noting. The Spanish Influenza and COVID-19 pandemics have significantly disrupted library operations. The similarities between the two pandemics are astounding and in both …
