The Journal of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This systematic review is based on academic work published between 2016 and 2022 at The Networked Digital Library of Theses and Dissertations. The descriptors related to FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable) are to be found in title, summary and/or keywords. The result shows that there are few academic studies on FAIR principles; the University of Porto and consequently Portugal are most intensive in FAIR data research. Dissertations and PhD theses are predominant; information and computer science is the field of study most correlated with FAIR.

Open Science Etds And Institutional Repositories: Making Research Data Fairer, Andrew Mckenna-Foster, Maria Cotera, Mark Hahnel
The Journal of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Graduate students, as potential future full-time researchers, are a population that should show proficiency in data sharing. Though there are many resources that teach data sharing best practices for students, it is difficult to tell how well students do when sharing their data. We compared the FAIRness of non-traditional research output metadata associated with theses and dissertations for records shared in a generalist repository by individual students, and records shared through an institutional repository using the same repository platform. Those shared in an institutional repository were significantly FAIRer, as measured by metadata richness and interoperability, and had higher views per …

From Idea To Functional Etd: Experiences From The University Of Novi Sad, Serbia, Mirjana Brković, Tatjana Tošić, Tatjana Zubić
The Journal of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This paper reviews different phases of introducing and usage of Electronic Theses and Dissertations – ETD at the University of Novi Sad with special emphasis on specific requirements, challenges and further directions of development and use of ETD systems at the University.
The Challenges Of The Current And Retrospective Digital Archiving Of Doctoral Dissertations: Toward Integration Of Several University Collections At The University Library “Svetozar Marković” In Belgrade, Tatjana Brzulović Stanisavljević, Dragana N. Stolić
The Challenges Of The Current And Retrospective Digital Archiving Of Doctoral Dissertations: Toward Integration Of Several University Collections At The University Library “Svetozar Marković” In Belgrade, Tatjana Brzulović Stanisavljević, Dragana N. Stolić
The Journal of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The University library “Svetozar Marković” possesses the most extensive and most valuable collection of doctoral dissertations defended at the University of Belgrade and other universities in Serbia or abroad, but this corpus is not unique. It can be divided into several sub-collections: current doctoral dissertations, which include mandatory archiving since 2012; a collection of doctoral dissertations digitized retrospectively by users’ demand; and, finally, a collection of old Serbian dissertations, which includes those defended by Serbian scientists at foreign universities and defended at the University of Belgrade at the beginning of the 20th century. In this paper, these sub-collections are described, …
Otrouha: A Corpus Of Arabic Etds And A Framework For Automatic Subject Classification, Eman Abdelrahman, Fatimah Alotaibi, Edward A. Fox, Osman Balci
Otrouha: A Corpus Of Arabic Etds And A Framework For Automatic Subject Classification, Eman Abdelrahman, Fatimah Alotaibi, Edward A. Fox, Osman Balci
The Journal of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Although the Arabic language is spoken by more than 300 million people and is one of the six official languages of the United Nations (UN), there has been less research done on Arabic text data (compared to English) in the realm of machine learning, especially in text classification. In the past decade, Arabic data such as news, tweets, etc. have begun to receive some attention. Although automatic text classification plays an important role in improving the browsability and accessibility of data, Electronic Theses and Dissertations (ETDs) have not received their fair share of attention, in spite of the huge number …
Building And Using Digital Libraries For Etds, Edward A. Fox
Building And Using Digital Libraries For Etds, Edward A. Fox
The Journal of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Despite the high value of electronic theses and dissertations (ETDs), the global collection has seen limited use. To extend such use, a new approach to building digital libraries (DLs) is needed. Fortunately, recent decades have seen that a vast amount of “gray literature” has become available through a diverse set of institutional repositories as well as regional and national libraries and archives. Most of the works in those collections include ETDs and are often freely available in keeping with the open-access movement, but such access is limited by the services of supporting information systems. As explained through a set of …
Digital Preservation, Accessibility, And Use Of Electronic Theses And Dissertations In University Libraries In Nigeria, Katamba Abubakar Saka, Abu Yusufu, Rose L. Mommoh
Digital Preservation, Accessibility, And Use Of Electronic Theses And Dissertations In University Libraries In Nigeria, Katamba Abubakar Saka, Abu Yusufu, Rose L. Mommoh
The Journal of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This study examined the concepts and aspects of digitization; digital preservation; digital resources; and access to, use of, and challenges posed by electronic theses and dissertations (ETDs) in university libraries in six geopolitical zones of Nigeria. It adopted a documentary research approach to highlight a critical examination of the various aspects of digitization (to provide electronic information services) as practiced by various university libraries and some library schools in Nigeria. Print theses and dissertations (T/Ds) are digitized by document scanning or direct text input (alphanumeric characters) into computer systems. Digital resources include e-books, e-journals, ETDs, and other forms of documents …
The Role Of Institutional Repositories In Advancing Open Scholarship: A Case Study From The United Arab Emirates University, Amina Itani, Linda Östlundh Mrs.
The Role Of Institutional Repositories In Advancing Open Scholarship: A Case Study From The United Arab Emirates University, Amina Itani, Linda Östlundh Mrs.
The Journal of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The digitization of theses and dissertations at the United Arab Emirates University (UAEU) began five years ago with the Digital Commons institutional repository (IR) platform, Scholarworks, employed for the purpose. The project, initiated by the University Library, exemplifies how academic libraries can take the lead in advocating for digital preservation and open access publishing of institutional research materials. This case study describes how the library’s Electronic Theses and Dissertations (ETD) initiative has provided an excellent model to the UAEU for it to start disseminating its research output and how the library’s copyright and open access policies have been crucial for …
Six Steps Toward Improving Discoverability Of Ph.D. Dissertations, Ljubomir Paskali, Lidija Ivanović, Dragan Ivanović, Dušan Surla
Six Steps Toward Improving Discoverability Of Ph.D. Dissertations, Ljubomir Paskali, Lidija Ivanović, Dragan Ivanović, Dušan Surla
The Journal of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This study proposes six steps that scientific institutions should undertake to increase the visibility and accessibility of their dissertations; these steps were implemented in the digital library of the University of Novi Sad. An analysis was conducted thereafter to evaluate the success, and it was found that the six steps and associated strategies were successful, with 400,000 downloads having been performed since the digital library was operational. Although this study presents six steps for improving electronic thesis and dissertation (ETD) discoverability in the digital library at the University of Novi Sad, these steps can easily be customized and implemented for …
