Today’s academic libraries must be able to communicate efficiently the depth of their resources to all campus communities, and Stony Brook University Libraries have worked to apply instructional methods to a broad spectrum of users. Our library has been using emerging technology, open access resources, and innovative teaching methods to engage with our local and global student and faculty community. Using our campus in South Korea as an example, we will highlight a number of strategies developed for delivering equitable information instruction sessions to our international students at satellite campuses across the world. Subject faculty sometimes put information literacy into a box when they ask a librarian to give “the library talk.” On the librarian’s end, this unimaginative request translates into a traditional one-shot, often focused on point-and-click skills training rather than building deeper IL competency. The authors developed a collaboration rubric to liberate librarians from this deadlock. This rubric document uses 9 lenses to focus the librarian-instructor collaboration on relevant sub-categories that show a variety of instruction modes. This case study will describe how the Stony Brook University Libraries instruction program partnered with another student support service (student computing office) to nurture a relationship with the Educational Opportunities Program (EOP) over several years to provide their students with the library research and computer skills needed to succeed in college. EOP is a state-funded program aimed at economically disadvantaged students whose high school education has not fully prepared them for college success.

Librarians at Oregon State University (OSU) Libraries used the discussion board features of Blackboard courseware to create an interactive experience for graduate students at a distance who could not attend the on-campus “Literature Review Workshops.” These recently developed workshops have been extremely popular with graduate students across the disciplines and have generated a growing demand from distance education graduate students and faculty to offer similar information online. Since 2001, librarians at Oregon State University's Valley Library have been working to build a "teaching library" supported by a clearly articulated instruction program. From the start, we believed that we needed to assess the teaching library's impact, not only to determine the success or failure of our efforts but also to demonstrate the need for intentional, proactive in formation literacy instruction on our campus. No single assessment tool or method proved adequate to effectively measure student learning happening both inside and outside the library.
