Library automation requires an extraordinary investment of time and money in the development and maintenance of databases. Irrespective of whether a library sets up a stand-alone system such as circulation, a group of more or less related subsystems, or a totally integrated system, it can be certain of one thing: over time needs will change, new applications will have to be developed, and modifications will have to be made to the file structure of the databases.
