The LibGuides platform, a content management system (CMS) from Springshare, has become an integral part of the online presence for many academic libraries. Neither Springshare nor other recent studies have provided an in-depth look at the evolving nature of LibGuides adoption, production and application across university and college categories. This study compared the prevalence and production of LibGuides to other forms of library guides at 799 academic libraries throughout the United States. LibGuides naming conventions were recorded and compared. The use of LibGuides CMS software to create library websites was also documented. This study found that there are clear differences …

Students Helping Students: Creating And Evaluating A Collaborative Service Model In The Library, Theresa Westbrock, Angie Cox

This study identifies the successes and challenges associated with the addition of a nonlibrary service desk in a university library’s learning commons. The authors wanted to know whether a training and service collaboration with an outside unit could reliably and efficiently connect students to the librarians, academic support services, and other resources that they need; and if advanced skills (including information literacy) training could be successfully built into the existing infrastructure of academic support departments. The authors identified strategies to address barriers when maintaining and improving a collaborative relationship and a dual-desk service model.

Critical Thinking In A Service-Learning Course: Impacts Of Information Literacy Instruction, Heather R. Kennedy, Anne Marie H. Gruber

It is well demonstrated that service-learning positively impacts a variety of student outcomes. However, methodological limitations have contributed to a lack of clear understanding of the mechanisms through which these effects occur. Additionally, little research has connected information literacy instruction explicitly with outcomes in service-learning courses. The present study used a pre-/post-test design to investigate cognitive outcomes, including critical thinking, using the Problem-Solving Analysis Protocol (P-SAP). Fifty-nine students from an undergraduate family services course participated. 7-Layer Citation Salad—The Joy Of Identifying Distinct Ingredients And Assembling A Glorious Delight: Students As Information And Citation Creators, Barbara E. Weeg, Leila June Rod-Welch

In the 7-Layer Citation Salad critical-thinking exercise, students become apprentice chefs as they learn to create journal article citations adhering to the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association. The library instruction chef draws parallels to mise en place (“everything in its place”) and to assembling a structured salad as the apprentices discover the rewards of identifying each citation ingredient from articles and assembling the ingredients in the proper order. The library chef discusses the need to credit other authors for their ideas. The standard recipe may be adapted to any citation style and the number of layers modified.

Problem/Need: How can I make a one-shot library instruction session for an undergraduate marketing research course more relevant and more interesting for the students and the librarian?

Solution: Draw on the techniques used by health sciences librarians (PICO, etc.), but reverse the PICO approach in order to create multidimensional scenarios to use when demonstrating library resources for these marketing research students.

Service-learning, a growing pedagogy in higher education, provides opportunities for students to contribute to communities and to reflect upon experiences ranging from direct service to advocacy. Librarians have an important but underutilized role in supporting service-learning as they contribute to institutional missions and the public purposes of academia. However, there is a gap in the literature related to faculty perceptions of information literacy instruction and skills related to service-learning. The researcher used semi-structured in-depth interviews, investigating these perceptions among 12 faculty across 10 disciplines. It was for a professor and class project that I knew from prior semesters: a marketing research class in which student teams work on specific business questions or problems put forth by local clients (small businesses, non-profit groups, campus organizations, etc.). In this unique project, college students in a first-year Three-Dimensional Concepts art course are partnered with a local youth writing project to create short films based on participants’ writings. This experience was born out of a campus Service-Learning Institute (SLI) to train faculty on best practices. The mutual goals included giving voice to area youth and connecting college students to the community. All participants explored and reflected on the importance of community engagement and citizenship by acknowledging their similarities and differences through creative lenses.

In higher education, mentoring is often structured as a relationship between a tenured, senior faculty member and an untenured, junior faculty member to ease the mentee's transition to the organization and to the tripartite faculty responsibilities of teaching, research, and service. Conflicts of interest emerge if the mentor, who has been serving as confidant and guide, participates in the promotion and tenure assessment of the mentee. As the government documents librarian, I was appointed to an ad hoc library task force in the spring of 2010. The task force was to determine if our library should remain in the Federal Depository Library Program (FDLP) as a selective depository. Ultimately, the group recommended that we remain in the FDLP, and the library administration accepted our recommendations. The recommendations included shifting from tangible government documents towards electronic documents wherever possible. The introduction of Google Scholar in November 2004 was accompanied by fanfare, skepticism, and numerous questions about the scope and coverage of this database. Nearly one year after its inception, many of these questions remain unanswered. This study compares the contents of 47 different databases with that of Google Scholar. Included in this investigation are tests for Google Scholar publication date and publication language bias, as well as a study of upload frequency. Tests show Google Scholar’s current strengths to be coverage of science and medical databases, open access databases, and single publisher databases. Current weaknesses include lack of coverage …

A gateway. consists of a set of interrelated tools that enables library users to identify and locate materials relevant to · their study and research. The tools are presented in a common structure or framework that facilitates the rapid identification of and navigation to the material. A gateway may include the catalog, supplemental databases to online resources, tools that link citation databases with online content, real time assistance, and help or user guidance components.
