The Advanced Writing library instruction program at Brigham Young University's Harold B. Lee Library (HBLL) is intended to teach junior-level students advanced information literacy and research skills. The university general education curriculum requires students to participate in the program as part of their Advanced Writing course. When anecdotal feedback from librarians and students identified problems with the program, the authors conducted a qualitative evaluation of the program in order to identify problems and possible solutions. The evaluation included a student survey and focus groups with students, librarians, and English faculty. This paper describes the HBLL Advanced Writing instruction program, identifies …

Google Scholar (GS) was released as a beta product in November of 2004. Since then, GS has been scrutinized and questioned by many in academia and the library field. Our objectives in undertaking this study were to determine how scholarly GS is in comparison with traditional library resources and to determine if the scholarliness of materials found in GS varies across disciplines. We found that GS is, on average, 17.6% more scholarly than materials found only in library databases and that there is no statistically significant difference between the scholarliness of materials found in GS across disciplines.

We present a unique interface design for mobile devices that addresses major user pain points with deep menu systems and page scrolling. Using a series of 1-5 wheels of content, arranged in a combination-lock style on a single mobile screen, this design enables a user to consume a multitude of personalized internet and web content without ever scrolling up/down or selecting from a menu. Additionally, the wheels are easily mapped to a personalized PC experience such as those from My MSN, live.com, and myYahoo!, enabling users to access their PC content from anywhere. Results from iterative testing across US, Japan, …

Immersive Learning Environments In Parallel Universes: Learning Through Second Life, Ken Haycock, Jeremy Kemp
Faculty Publications
Opportunities for more creative and innovative environments for learners continue to develop through distance education. Especially at the post-secondary level, these immersive environments can involve high-end video game technologies to create multi-user virtual worlds that can both replicate and far extend physical classrooms. At San Jose State University's School of Library and Information Science, courses offered in and through Second Life develop both competence and comfort in working with library users. Several useful lessons have also been learned.

The aim of this research is to study the usefulness of the New Jersey Digital Highway (NJDH, www.njdigitalhigh way.org) and its portal structure. The NJDH intends to provide an immersive and user-centered portal for New Jersey history and culture. The research recruited 145 participants and used a Web-based questionnaire that contained three sections: for everyone, for educators, and for curators. The feedback on the usefulness of the NJDH was positive and the portal structure was favorable. The research uncovered several reasons why some collections did not want to or could not participate. The findings also suggested priorities for further development. …

This program focused on tips, techniques, and suggestions to understand, educate, communicate, and negotiate with the C folks in your firm. It is important for librarians to prove their worth in their organization by leveraging their assets and expertise. Several questions were proposed to the panel of experts. Each gave their own insight as to what they have done to address the question in their firm. The C levels are anyone within your organization with a C level title (i.e., CEO, CFO, COO, and CMO).

Conjure up a picture of today's librarian, and you are likely to be wrong. Professional librarians are information analysts, freedom of information and protection of privacy officers, family literacy specialists, Internet trainers, teen specialists, genealogists, Web designers and technologists, database managers, historical researchers, information brokers. Indeed, few have the title of “librarian” but all have the master's degree in Library and Information Science (LIS). Graduate LIS programs are appealing to a younger and more diverse student population, yet recruitment is still problematic due to misconceptions about the career and the little-known fact that the first professional degree is at the …

Evaluating Group Use Of The Information Commons, Michael J. Whitchurch

Evaluating the effectiveness of an information commons has been discussed in many venues since the concept was first implemented. The Harold B. Lee Library at Brigham Young University confronted this same struggle. After two years of activity, the information commons had not been assessed to see whether the purposes for which it was planned were being fulfilled. This paper describes its first assessment. Measuring the number of groups who used the information commons over the period of two years, the assessment showed that indeed the commons is being used to a great extent for group work, one of the goals …

Brigham Young University (BYU), located in Provo, Utah, is home to the Marriott School of Management, which has an enrollment of 1,900 undergraduate and 1,100 graduate students. Nearly 75 percent are bilingual, 20 percent speak a third language, and approximately 10 percent are foreign citizens.
In the year 2000, the Tanner Management Library was displaced from the Marriott School and incorporated into the Harold B. Lee Library, BYU’s main campus library. Without a physical presence in the business school, BYU’s business librarians have struggled to remain relevant to a faculty and student body that is increasingly dependent on the Internet …

Most of us wonder if we are saving enough for retirement. The key to easing those fears is to be informed about different saving vehicles and investment options. This is the intent of Women’s Institute for a Secure Retirement (WISER),(www.wiser.heinz.org).The main focus of WISER is to educate women according to their unique needs: Research shows that women live longer than men and have a shorter work history, lesser pension plan coverage, and less …

Writing Circle Feedback: Creating A Vibrant Community Of Scholars, Allyson Washburn

An article previously published in this journal described Gray's twelve steps to help scholars write and publish (1999). One of the elements of Gray's process is to share writing drafts and receive feedback from peers. Writing circles provide writers with peer support and reactions to their writing throughout the writing process. Participation in a writing circle can assist junior library faculty in overcoming such factors as fear, lack of confidence, and procrastination. This paper describes the establishment and workings of a writing circle at the Harold B. Lee Library (HBLL) at BYU that attempted to assist junior faculty librarians to …

In a 2007 study, librarians at the University of South Carolina School of Medicine Library examined freely available online tutorials on medical library Web sites. The team identified tutorial topics, determined common design features, and assessed elements of active learning in library-created tutorials; the team also generated a list of third-party tutorials to which medical libraries link. This article updates the earlier study, describing changes and trends in tutorial content and design on medical libraries’ Web sites; the project team plans to continue to track trends in tutorial development by repeating this study annually.
