A Textbook Program Is Not For Us! Re-Imagining Failure Into New Possibilities, Heidi Blackburn, Tammi Owens
A Textbook Program Is Not For Us! Re-Imagining Failure Into New Possibilities, Heidi Blackburn, Tammi Owens
Criss Library Faculty Proceedings & Presentations
Sometimes, despite all our efforts, projects fail. We’re here to tell you that’s okay. In 2017, the University of Nebraska at Omaha's Criss Library created a Textbook Reserves Pilot Project. At the time we weren’t sure it would work out. We were optimistic, though. After all, we had plenty of evidence that said it would work: our literature review had examples of successful textbook programs. Our data showed textbook prices rising. We met with advisors across our campus who said students desperately needed textbooks to succeed. We had buy-in from library administrators, the bookstore, and student government, but something just …

Adventures With Omeka.Net: Metadata, Workflows, And Exhibit-Based Storytelling At Uno Libraries, Angela Kroeger, Yumi Ohira, Lori Schwartz
Criss Library Faculty Proceedings & Presentations
The University of Nebraska at Omaha (UNO) Libraries have been using Omeka.net both for online exhibits and as a portal for access to selected special collections, including Omaha Histories and the Queer Omaha Archives. This presentation highlights the best practices for metadata, workflows, and exhibit-based storytelling using the hosted Omeka.net service. UNO Libraries Archives & Special Collections has created metadata best practices for the Dublin Core metadata in Omeka.net, including a guide for community partners who might be willing to create their own descriptive metadata. The presenters have experimented with batch loading metadata into Omeka.net using the CSV Import plugin …

Criss Library Faculty Proceedings & Presentations
To enhance access to their diverse materials, libraries are digitizing those materials and making them freely available online as digital collections on digital platforms. These collections provide another way for libraries to re-envision their materials and make them relevant to their communities. This presentation will cover best practices for creating and preserving digital collections, including workflows, standards, and staffing. It will also discuss the policies which should be developed for building successful digital collections, as well as the privacy issues which should be considered. In this presentation, individual digital collections from the University of Nebraska at Omaha and Creighton University …

Sometimes, despite all our efforts, projects fail. We’re here to tell you that’s okay. Last year, we came to NLA to report about the creation of our textbook pilot project. What we didn’t share was that we weren’t sure it would work out. We were optimistic, though. After all, we had plenty of evidence that said it would work: our literature review had examples of successful textbook programs. Our data showed textbook prices rising. Storytelling In A Digital Age: Connecting Our Communities And Collections Using Exhibits, Amy Schindler, Lori Schwartz
Storytelling In A Digital Age: Connecting Our Communities And Collections Using Exhibits, Amy Schindler, Lori Schwartz
Criss Library Faculty Proceedings & Presentations
In recent years, the impetus to create exhibits (both physical and online) that are innovative, professional, and meaningful for diverse audiences as part of a robust outreach program has increased significantly. The Society of American Archivists defines exhibitions as an organized display of materials with the secondary definition of a public demonstration of skills. The presenters will use their skills to demonstrate to attendees how they can re-envision the relevance of their exhibits and displays of collections material, in whatever form may be most appropriate for their institution and resources. Both presenters are archivists who have each worked in academic …

ArchivesSpace is a web-based, open-source, community-supported tool for managing and making accessible archival collections. However, implementing it can seem overwhelming for institutions with limited staff, technological skills, and/or resources. That’s where a consortium can help! In this presentation, we will give a brief overview of ArchivesSpace at the University of Nebraska (NU) system. The University of Nebraska at Omaha (UNO) started using ArchivesSpace four years ago. In 2017, in collaboration with UNO, the University of Nebraska Medical Center (UNMC) began implementing ArchivesSpace. This project led to the NU system exploring the options for a deeper collaboration involving all four universities, …

The Status Of Women In Stem In Higher Education: A Literature Review 2007-2017, Heidi Blackburn, Tarun Chaturvedi
Criss Library Faculty Proceedings & Presentations
Use Google to search “Women in STEM in higher education” and see what comes up. What if you were an administrator trying to write a grant to recruit female students in IT? Or an instructor trying to advise a student club for women in computer science? In recent years, the spotlight on STEM education has given rise to hundreds of studies ranging from the recruitment and retention of women students to the workplace climate of women faculty and staff. This information was not easily available in one location for use in reports, press releases, curriculum, or grants. Through a Carnegie-Whitney …
Making Room For Moms: Advocating For A Lactation Space In The Library, Heidi Blackburn, Joyce Neujahr
Making Room For Moms: Advocating For A Lactation Space In The Library, Heidi Blackburn, Joyce Neujahr
Criss Library Faculty Proceedings & Presentations
Women make up 80% of the library workplace and 56% of the student body population in higher education (Department of Education, 2017). They make up 53% of the faculty, staff, and administration in public universities in the United States (Chronicle of Higher Education, 2017). Yet, it was easy for us to overlook a smaller, specific population: How was our organization serving moms? The University of Nebraska at Omaha (UNO) Criss Library staff saw a need within our own work place for employees, which opened our eyes to a larger problem for patrons: a lactation space. Where could new mothers go …

Criss Library Faculty Proceedings & Presentations
UNO’s Chancellor’s Commission for the Status of Women (CCSW) has been at the forefront of inclusion of all genders since the 1970’s. Recently, CCSW has extensively re-evaluated UNO’s campus climate and has submitted an action plan to the Chancellor to improve the status of women students, faculty, and staff. This presentation will focus on CCSW’s renewed and energetic efforts in the last several years to make UNO more gender-inclusive in our physical spaces, work environments, leadership roles, and campus policies.

Explanations, Analogies, And Elaborations: Incorporating Questioning Prompts In Instruction Sessions, Omer Farooq
Explanations, Analogies, And Elaborations: Incorporating Questioning Prompts In Instruction Sessions, Omer Farooq
Criss Library Faculty Proceedings & Presentations
Educational psychologists have long studied and advocated for using learning techniques that help students achieve their learning outcomes in a variety of different contexts. These strategies include elaborative interrogation and self-explanation, which bring the processes of comprehension and synthesis to the explicit attention of the learner. A similar case can be made for the use of strategies such as self-explanations, analogies, and elaborative interrogation prompts that enhance learning by facilitating the various stages of the research process. This presentation highlights ways to incorporate specific questioning prompts as a pedagogical tool including examples of prompts in deconstructing a topic, identifying resources, …
