Freshman And Sophomore Introduction To Manufacturing-Related Engineering Handbooks Using Knovel Databases, Julia L. Morse, Heidi Blackburn

Criss Library Faculty Proceedings & Presentations

Graduates’ abilities to find and apply relevant information from engineering handbooks and reference books to their engineering and technology problems can be considered foundational to their abilities to pursue lifelong-learning in their field. Searchable, electronic access to traditional engineering handbooks and reference books as provided by the database Knovel serves as a user-friendly platform to introduce students to both the breadth and depth of reference book information available.

Engineering technology students in a freshman manufacturing processes course and a sophomore materials and metallurgy course were given a hands-on introduction to the Knovel database to promote an early familiarization to relevant …

This article offers a theoretical model of online, graduate student information seeking behavior. The qualitative methodology used to gather data for the development of the model included an electronic survey and semi-structured interviews conducted online using Adobe Connect Pro™. Participating in the study were 238 graduate students enrolled in at least one online course at a mid-western university. Data analysis included use of Zoomerang™ reports to interpret survey data, and content analysis of interview transcriptions. The resulting evolution of the Bates’ (2002) theoretical model includes new two modes of information seeking: scrutinizing (directed, dynamic), and being alert (undirected, dynamic). The …

South-Of-The-Border Boolean: Teaching Search Strategies With The Value Menu, Heidi Blackburn Jan 2012

South-Of-The-Border Boolean: Teaching Search Strategies With The Value Menu, Heidi Blackburn

Criss Library Faculty Proceedings & Presentations

As databases and Internet search engines continue to become increasingly user-friendly, the need for Boolean operator skills seems to have waned but in reality, the amount of online information is skyrocketing as thousands of articles are uploaded each day. Bridging familiar activities with new Boolean operator skills sets the stage for a smooth introduction for students and creates a strong foundation for the retention of those skills. Using the simple task of ordering from a restaurant menu to demonstrate to students they already have the skills to do successful online searching, the South-of-the-Border Boolean lesson plan connects everyday tasks and …
