The following search strategies were built for a systematic review addressing non-arthritic hip diseases and psychosocial factors. An a priori protocol for this review was developed and registered with PROSPERO (CRD42021248562). The search was originally designed in PubMed, then translated to the other databases searched (Scopus, Web of Science, CINAHL, and SPORTDiscus). Search peer review was performed by Anna Crawford using a modified version of the Peer Review of Electronic Search Strategies guideline. The original search was run on July 12, 2021, with a search update performed on June 21, 2023.

Jenn is a liaison to the allied health fields at her institution. Upon discovering this overlap, and their shared membership in NAHRS, they thought it would be informative to learn more about the liaison work of the caucus as a whole. Michelle thought it would be a …

Saying No To Say Yes: Mediating Student Technology Needs In Times Of Crisis, Catherine Fonseca, Rita Premo, Hilary Smith Jan 2023

Saying No To Say Yes: Mediating Student Technology Needs In Times Of Crisis, Catherine Fonseca, Rita Premo, Hilary Smith

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

This chapter details the mediating role embraced by the SSU Library in managing university-wide technology and learning challenges during an unanticipated pivot to remote instruction and is organized according to lessons learned. Responding to COVID disruptions in real time, we identified key areas where our expertise and relationships allowed us to advocate for and support students, while also saying no or limiting our participation in others. Limiting the services provided during a crisis to only those that fit within the core scope of our mission was a powerful tactic that libraries should exercise often and widely communicate. Rather than answering …

The pandemic forced those working in higher education to navigate a myriad of changes in all facets of day-to-day operations. From January-February 2022, we conducted a study that surveyed hiring managers for professional academic library positions to identify how the COVID-19 pandemic has affected their hiring and onboarding processes. We will present our preliminary findings from the mixed-methods survey in advance of a published article. Our study identifies changes in hiring practices and reflects the current attitudes of hiring managers in regards to future employment practices.

Because many interview processes have transitioned to an online format, some hiring managers are …

The Death Of The Big Deal And Implications For Technical Services, Angela Maranville, Karen Diaz Jan 2021

The Death Of The Big Deal And Implications For Technical Services, Angela Maranville, Karen Diaz

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

In recent years, a growing number of libraries have canceled or unbundled their “Big Deal” journal subscriptions – those subscriptions that include a full package of digital journal titles for one discounted cost. This started as an affordability problem but has slowly morphed into a challenge from libraries demanding a new pricing structure that accommodates and spurs the growing open access movement.

The change has caused a variety of challenges for technical services units including the increased need for user data, increasingly complicated workflows as they manage partial subscriptions, new interactions with consortia, and ongoing campus conversations. Whether the library …

Walking Away From The "Big Deal": Where We Are One Year After Crossing That Bridge, Susan Arnold

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

Background:

Budgetary constraints at West Virginia University (WVU) in combination with impending expiration/renewal of “big deal” contracts resulted in the unbundling of three major journal packages between 2017-2019: Wiley, Elsevier Science Direct, and Springer. Unbundling these packages saved the library system a total of $1,441,450. This poster will describe longer-term results of these decisions and how we have continued to adapt to improve access to journals for our research community.

Methods:

Since the unbundling, the WVU Libraries’ Collections Advisory Committee has closely monitored ILL usage and costs for canceled titles, as well as faculty complaints and requests. An interactive session …

Innovation For The Engaged Librarian, Marian G. Armour-Gemmen Jun 2020

Innovation For The Engaged Librarian, Marian G. Armour-Gemmen

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

As librarians, we constantly innovate to meet the needs of our users and to utilize new technology. Discovery is an important part of this process. When we discover our patrons’ pain points, we can more easily adapt to their needs. As the National Science Foundation’s Innovation Corps program is implemented in more and more universities, engineering and patent librarians facilitate faculty and scientists in using the Business Model Canvas. Librarians can help faculty and scientists with familiarizing themselves with library resources to fill key parts of the Canvas. Additionally, this canvas is often implemented in innovation centers across campuses, and …

Engaging First Year Students With Intellectual Property, Marian G. Armour-Gemmen

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

Since intellectual property is so important to engineers, creating enthusiasm from the beginning of their engineering studies is imperative. Since first year students have not learned how to apply technological concepts to real life, demonstrating intellectual property could be a challenge. To engage first year engineering students in the concept and the value of intellectual property, students were introduced to basic concepts and applications. Different concepts were applied to real life examples allowing them to interface with technology from an intellectual property perspective. This paper highlights not only patents, but also trademarks and trade secrets.

Arnova-L And The Cinderella Syndrome, Roger A. Lohmann

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

In this brief newsletter column, the author recounts the story of how a LISTSERV-based discussion list founded in 1991 helped to transform an international multi-disciplinary research society from a "Cinderella organization" that convened once a year for a three-day conference and then effectively disappeared again until the next annual conference. Communications fostered through the discussion list helped to transform the organization into a fully-functioning, year-round operation as subscriptions burgeoned from an original 32 subscribers to more than 1,500.
